After dark review

the skiing was pretty sick but some of the song choices were absolutely horid. It's pretty hard to fuck up a tom wallisch segment and they somehow managed. PBR's movie was far better in my opinion

Just saw a premier of this last night, and to be honest I was really disappointed. Good skiing, but music choices were pretty awful, and it just seemed so gloomy. Skiing's fun, try make it look that way.

I hate how production companies try to put "themes" in movies. There isn't enough story line behind them to make any sense. The ahmet bunny porn clip was find of amusing though.

My two favorites were begggin for change (both keefer's and tim's parts blew my mind) and weight (all a round a good ski movie to watch good skiing and good music) After dark was somewhat of a let down for a level 1 movie. The Russia segment was tight though.

The Moscow part was one of their best trips they've done if not the best, just came out really well.

AD was fucking ill. If anyone on here had an open mind and didn't listen to shitty music, you'd appreciate the soundtrack. All the skiing was on point. The theme was fun. Fuck the haters!

Soundtrack was the best of any level one movie for a while IMO.I liked the movie as a whole too, preferred it to PBP for sure. I like PBP too but i felt it didn't really hold together at all and I found some of the filming really annoying.

so many haters with opinions. watch it a few times before jumping on this dumbass website. The riders picked all the music pretty much, so if you don't like it; who cares; you dont even have the right to hate on their shit..... Just be thankful and stoked to watch something they spent an entire season trying to make. ns is crazy.

I think After Dark lacked level and originality in urban.. I'm not saying the movie was a complete fail, I wont dare say this since I spend 60 good minutes but you know.. I don't call this a BIG ski movie. I like the music, out of Rap and Dubstep which is really getting boring in edits..

Amazingly diverse soundtrack. Everyone shitting on the soundtrack has horrid taste. The kinks, mos, electric prunes, al green, solid instrumentals, yeasayer, some other variety....can't ask for more. Did I love each and every song? Not at all....strongly disliked two, but it was solid overall and the choices fit the theme. Also, the theme was fun...reminded me of old school flicks and gave it some personality and cohesiveness. Sounds like the harsh critics wanted a dub step, rap laden soundtrack and wanted it to be an hour long park edit?

Best flick ever? Probably not, but it was fun and there were hammers galore.

definitely disliked some of the songs a lot but others being really good make up for it. didnt think the theme and intro were done too well but i thought lots of the segments were just great. cant wait to watch parker white's again

didnt love ahmet's segment as last but that probably has more to do with not liking the song at all

but yeah the parts i liked, i liked a lot. good shit

I haven't had a chance to finish it yet but I'm 3/4 of the way through. So far I hate the transitions, really like the soundtrack (nice to hear not shitty rap and techno for the entire film for once), thought the Charles Gagnier/JF Houle segment was fucking baller, and was kind of disappointed Wiley Miller didn't do anything that made me think "holy shit he's gonna die".

Overall its good but not as good as last year, although like I said I haven't seen the final couple segments yet.

downloaded it on itunes. now attempting to watch it on my shitty computer that is having so much trouble playing it that there has been no sound since right after parkers seg and its basically frame by frame haha. but my opinion so far on my experience is good even with the problems. probably the strangest intro since TBC but the skiing is sick even in frame by frame

my feelings after watching a second time:

i like the first ~half more than the second

russia seg is great but the music is way too fast/dramatic

tom wallisch is still one of the sickest dudes out there

i still hate how BS stuff looks on level 1's cameras, but think the urban looks good

skiing is at a really sick point right now

still LOVE all the sick features (found and made in park). s turn 2 jump combo and opposite hip are great and get ripped up. tom's rodeo 9 on the oppo hip is tits

I am not implying disrespect or anything, but could you elaborate more on the cameras?

I need to rant somewhere, so I'll rant here.

I've been watching Level 1 Movies for years now and After Dark was their best offering yet, and to be honest, I'm getting so fed up with all the kids claiming it sucked and how they would watch other stuff. I don't give a shit! Go ahead and watch other shit, nothing gives you the right to make a thread, especially with that sort of lack of intelligence.

Now while we're on the topic lets look at WHY you might not like it as much as you do your precious PBP (PBR.) Every film production company has their own STYLE of making ski movies, for example:

Level 1 - Artistic approach to the filming, editing, skiing, etc.

MSP - Epic "best day of my life" "i did this, did that" style. Also have a unique production style.

TGR - More of a full throttle, documentary style. Everything including filming, editing, skiing, and whatnot.

Rage (RIP) - Very unique kind of 'poppy' way of putting everything together. Definitely had their own flare on it

*Basically most film companies found their niche and are damn good at playing their part

-Then one gets to PBP (which the OP loves) and I personally have a really hard time finding a style to the production. I mean, the skiing and editing is technically good and whatever, but every part is so drastically different - ever year their movies seem to get less and less flow to them, and it seems like their reaching further and further to find their style and now they seem to be drawing blanks. I honestly don't think PBP has any style to its production in any manner.

I don't mean to hate on OP for not liking level 1, you're entitled to your own opinion, but that just triggered my view on the state on modern PBP.

*DISCLAIMER

I only mentioned the big production companies in which I am well acquainted with. I would include Stept/4BI9/Field etc. but I just have never seen their movies (although I want to) so I can't have too much of an opinion.

(no proof read, fuck it)

^ i think you are right until you said the words PBP. I think they are the BEST because they adapt nd dont try to tie themselves down to one trend, style, format, quality whatever you wanna call it. To prove this point watch PROPAGANDA and then Grand BIzarre. both are totally different from different eras of skiing and although there maybe some movies that fell short in between i think this is a testament to johnny desceare and his "style" if you will. That being said i didnt really like After Dark, though i do like level 1. But their best movie is by farrrr shanghai 6.

I usally just rant on things but I thought After Dark was ill.

I guess im not allowed to say this but there's way much complaining about everything.

I think you got me all wrong. What I'm saying is that I like how the individual companies have their own style. I think it's a great way to cover all the aspects of skiing - every style and idea deserves its limelight, cause its all fucking awesome! But PBP jumps and skips in between. darting from a little level 1 to a little TGR then it gets lost and ends up chasing its tale around in the middle.

i just have never liked how digital theyve looked, BC shots with shit tons of snow in most shots need to have that aesthetic film in my opinion. but hey i still think most stuff should be shot in 16mm, i just like the look. and like i said the urban shots that level 1 does are great
