#1 Ranked Slopestyle Skier in World left out of Freeskier SOTY voting.

Not dissing any of the Skier of the Year nominees, cuz they're all studs, but wish we had the opportunity to vote for X Games champion & AFP's #1 world-ranked slope skier, Nick Goepper. Not sure how he got left out of this.
 
I don't have anything against Goepper but I would vote for 16 of the guys in the poll if they were matched against him. I don't have an issue with him not being in the poll. Freeskier knows it's SOTY is a popularity contest and when it comes down to it, Goepper isn't exactly that popular.
 
This is what I hate about crowdsource voting/contests. The most skilled person can easily be beaten by someone with less skill but more popularity.

There should be a people's choice award and a winner picked by judges.

AFP hands out awards for best comp skiers every year.

IF3 and Powder hand out awards for best film skiers

Powder, freeskier, and I'm sure a bunch of other people do the popularity contest route.

All ways of awarding the best skier are out there. It's not exactly like this is the only skier of the year award out there.

However is there a SOTY that takes into account both film and comp skiing? Or maybe an award to the best all around skier that participated in all aspects of the sport in the previous winter?

It's fucked either way of awarding through judges or crowd voting. Someones always unhappy but since there are awards given from both ways of judging, I don't get why this becomes a big deal.

 
I don't think its that big of a deal, I just generally don't like crowdsource voting contests in and of themselves.
 
No, it's not everything. But it is pretty fricken big. In the op's valid opinion, big enough to warrant inclusion as one of 16 potential skiers of the year.

meh, was way more stoked to see what athletes they did choose this year rather than some stupid comp jockey like goepper.

First of all, this is an opinion based contest. Freeskier picked people based on their staffs opinion. Was Goepper top 20? probably, but who would you take out to replace with goepper? Every single person on that list does more than just contests or doesn't even do contests. When it comes to this kind of "contest" (as its been said, popularity contest) someone like goepper is going to get bumped out because he doesn't make a huge impact on the industry, he just has the most afp points. I'd even argue gus didn't win as much as goepper, but overall gus has had way more influence on the industry and actually shows his face outside of contest. People enjoy watching gus ski, he makes edits, etc and you can't say the same about goepper, which is probably why gus is in and goepper isn't.

Again, this is all opinions. If geopper was included do you think he'd make it past round 1? I don't think he has any chance to step to any of those 16 when it comes to a popularity contest. Plus, the last thing freeskier wants to do is pump out a voting contest with all slope riders, then they'd get a bunch of shit for it.

Either way, this is a stupid fucking content that freeskier puts on to get some more page views. It literally has no significance in the sport other than the winner get a cover photo on freeskier. You don't win money, you don't get anything special, you just know that a bunch of needle dick 12 year olds voted for you.
 
Who can hack the Freeskier website and get eheath in the running so he will get the cover of freeskier thanks to the voting of needle dicked 12 year olds?
 
what im not getting is why freeskier has to narrow down everybody into brackets...why can't they just let it be a free for all with who ever gets the most votes wins?? or freeskier should just decide this shit for themselves
 
Because this is more accurate. If your favorite is eliminated, then you can still keep voting for your second favorite. If it was one round, Free-for-all, then you would only be voting for your favorite. It's like ranking everyone from your favorite to least-favorite, except better, because a simple yes-no is more accurate than a rank from 1-10.
 
Because frankly, he doesn't deserve it, I still have yet to see him ski anywhere outside of a park, and rarely outside of a contest. That doesn't make you the skier of the year, that makes you a good contest skier, which don't get me wrong is impressive as hell. It's just not something any of us, or freeskier, want's featured in their magazine
 
If goepper wanted to be popular he could. You give him a few different clothes and tell him to change how he normally looks on rails to something else, he could do it. He could easily make it in the industry just like clayton, etc.

ps - clayton used to do both way 12s in the pipe...

I'm totally with Sam on this. I think Nick is worthy of a spot over a few of the guys listed. What does he have to do to earn respect in this community. Win an Olympic medal. Oh no I forgot that would be even worse since there's so many comp haters in NS's

So I skier who prefers to do edits or films deserves a spot in SOTY, but I guy who consistantly podiums in high level competitions doesn't?? We'll have to agree to disagree.

 
He needs to do something that isn't a park comp. His backyard edit and the urban he hit for an ohio loc movie like 5 years ago doesn't count. That's not the top level shit. He needs to show the community he's more than just a boss for the judges. You can't deny he's a great skier but you don't see pbp or level 1 getting him into the park segment of their movies for good reason.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. At some point he'll pull a Nyjah Huston.
 
All in good time.... Right now Nick's focusing on competition because that's where his current goals are. And each skier needs to focus on whatever he/she wants. Just thought gold medal at X Games and finishing 1st in the world in slope would have at least gotten him on the ballot. But it's all subjective and the editors of Freeskier are entitled to their opinion. I am entitled to disagree, as are you. (Oh, and I'm sure he's been asked to be in films, but he's said he's focusing on comps right now).
 
How was that rude? It's true, slopestyle competitions do not define the overall skill of any skier.
 
if nick was a comp jock that did alright id concur. But nick has been tearing the comp scene up. If your argument is he shouldnt be nominated because all he does is slope? then why would someone like clayton who does only urban nominated? Its the same, nick does slope, clayton does urban and they are both the best at it and both deserve a spot there. Its absolute bs someone can win the xgames and be ranked #1 in afp points and not atleast get the nomination...
 
No male slopestyle winner ever besides Goepper is defined as being an X games winner or even by the comp scene. It's frankly not acceptable for a male to define his worth as a skier by being a champion of one event. This isn't Olympic track and field where if you win the 100 meter dash once you're set for life. In skiing it's like cool you won, what else can you do?

When you think of Sammy, do you think of how he's defined by the one time he won xgames slope?

How about Candide? It's pretty easy to forget that he even one xgames slope.

What about Tanner? He has six other X games golds and still, tanners Xgames results are just a blip on what he has done in skiing.

What about Wally? Or Andreas? Or Charles Gangier? There's been like 9 different winners in 10 years. Even Bobby has video parts.

Same holds true for the Pipejocks. What else do they do? What was goepper do? This is not what goepper is going to do, it's what he has done and as far as I'm concerned he really hasn't done anything yet.
 
I'm inclined to agree with most people here, he's just not well rounded enough, and he's not really that much a part of this sort of scene. You moms probably love his dedication to comp skiing, or whatever, but that's just not what most people like, nor is it what the contest is about. Too bad he's not in the running, but he needs to get more involved in the community first.
 
Skier (X ) grows up at resort with vertical drop of 400 feet that no one really knows about. Skier (X) worked his ass off over the last few years and now skis with the people he admired growing up. Skier (X) now travels all around the world and sets the bar for slopestyle skiing. Skier (X) is a nice person with a good heart and is passionate about progressing himself. Skier (X) has a great story and I would expect him to atleast be on that list.

Magazine (Y) however... Well I just dont know some times.
 
I don't know Nick Goeper, but I really feel like there's a little more going on than just "whatever he wants" as far as his comp jock status (this status is not debatable, btw). I think if filming was as lucrative as comp skiing, he'd probably be doing that. If that's the case, then the lack of respect he gets on ns is totally justified because the way he's navigated through the skiing world is totally at odds with what most people in this community think skiing is all about.
 
Haha lets pretend you and every other person on this thread didn't take the time to watch his Paradise edit 2 years ago, or any other edit he's puts out for that matter. Wait till after the olympics when he decides to shut everyone up with some groundbreaking film part

He's already filmed and I stand by what I said. He has absolutely no style. In the link/video OP posted above, he looks robotic. It looks like the most realistic animation you've ever seen. He also does the same thing everyone else does. He doesn't change it up. I think 99% of the grabs he did were tail grabs. The only different thing he did was half-assed butters.
