#1 Ranked Slopestyle Skier in World left out of Freeskier SOTY voting.

You're one of those kids that would suck Phil Casabon or Tanner Hall's dick if the opportunity presented itself, aren't you?

Not only is Goepper a positive, good dude. But he also slays it on skis and has more style than you ever will have. As mentioned above, give him a little time to develop his own style and start filming, and he'll be one of the best out for sure. Just because he doesn't have dreads and his ass hanging out underneath his tall tee doesn't mean he doesn't have style, you fucking noob.

This is such an idiotic argument to attempt to make, and I'm a fucking idiot for actually trying.

You don't have to equal someone in skill or ability to make valid observations about those qualities. Secondly, if you aren't perceptive or knowledgable enough to make slightly more subtle judgments about a person's skiing style beyond superficial bullshit like clothing and hairstyle, well, you're doing it wrong.

In terms of binary, quantifiable things like grabbing throughout a trick, landing quietly, degrees of rotation, you cannot argue that Goepper isn't one of the very best.

You can find things about his skiing that aren't as aesthetic or "stylish", though. Clearly, those things are subjective, and maybe some people even prefer some of those things (a perfect example is his tendency to really exaggerate upperbody/arm prewind, particularly spinning on to rails. As the rotation continues, his hands sometimes go over his head, and I don't think it looks very controlled, relaxed, or smooth), but it's so dumb on your part to try and reduce any/all criticisms to being about dumb shit like clothing choice.

Do you really believe that the only difference between Adam Delorme and Nick Goepper is jacket and pant size?

Adam Delorme has had an infinitely bigger impact on skiing than Nick Goepper, and it's not because he wears a lot of black.

NS isn't "anti-comp". There's a real reason why this site tends to value other aspects of skiing over competitions, even one's that highlight the type of skiing most of us like. It's because skiing exists well outside of and beyond competitions. Football only exists as a competition. 99% of skiers will never compete in any aspect of skiing, and for most it isn't even on the radar in terms of being a goal. Therefore, people just aren't by default in awe of competitors the way they are in other sports.

It's ok to think Goepper is an amazing skier and to prefer his skiing over others. It's downright stupid to try and argue that the only reason he isn't NS's hero is because his clothes fit and he doesn't shotgun beers and/or blow smoke at the camera.

For the 10th time, this isn't about what goepper is going to do in the future, it is about what he has done. Stop trying to justify his current value on the future earnings he hasn't done yet. We aren't stock picking or looking at nick as an investment, we're looking at his past accomplishments.

Note: I'm not a goepper hater although the length of my posts in this thread assume I'm hot and bothered about him not accomplishing what he needs to to get into the freeskier SOTY pool.

Im pretty sure a skier in SOTY (ie clayton - who is very capable of competitions by the way) has earned it with filming way way more than someone (ie nick) who just knows how to impress a judge.

IH so you think its fairly simple to qualify, let alone podium in X Games, World Cups, Grand Prix, Dew Tours etc??

what's the point of a trick if it doesn't look sick?

facepalm... it's freeskiing so that you don't have to look like a robot.

of course i dont think its simple. I have lots of respect for nick as a skier, and i do believe he is likely to take gold this coming year. However as it was stated above, there are countless awards in which are given out to contest skiers- which nick is headed towards. However this is not one of them.

If you have the money.

Its near impossible to get to that level these days without the money. Comp skiing is the same old shit as racing now. Obviously there is a "skill" factor as well but I guarantee that if Goepper didnt have some dough backing him, he wouldnt be the perfect, well oiled, boring, jesus loving, family friendly, captain america, slope robot, kansas city corncob that he is today.

Hold on...

I'm as anti-comp as they come, but where is your argument of 'if you have the money' coming from?

I agree with you that money helps you win contests by getting lots of training in, not having other responsibilities, going to camps, getting coaches, etc. However, its absolutely not like racing where the fanciest skis make you faster than other people. At a certain point the best part about our type of skiing is that your own skills have to shine through eventually.

You can't discount the level of talent it takes to podium at major events. You can debate style all day long - you can even debate whether style is talent - but you absolutely can not debate that the guys winning these contests don't have talent.

That talent though it might be helped by money, you can apply a billion dollars to the worst skier ever and they're still going to suck ass.

I'd also enter into this that there is no way your favorite film skiers got their start simply by working at Mickey D's and begging for change to get the new afterbangs. Skiing is a rich sport, and almost anyone who takes part at least has some well-to-do behind them.

I'll even go so far as to give you that money might help you get ahead, but this is equal across all parts of the sport and without natural talent you're plain fucked.

Your right it was a ridiculous bold statement but let me explain a little bit where I am coming from.

Obviously you have been around forever and have seen everything this sport has shown the world but one trend that I have noticed since I have been involved in the sport is the formula of a comp skier.

Obviously there has to be some raw natural athletic talent but after that....? Look at the advantage that people who are putting in tonnes of money have in this sport. The best fastest skis are not going to win x games but the formula of joining a team, doing trampoline training, have access to waterramps, having access to an airbag, going to summer camps where features are straight up built to learn things (jumps especially), going to a "skiing" school and skiing everyday, being able to afford to fly around north america before you are big enough for a travel budget.

Yes I realize that skiing is a "rich" sport but film skiers get picked up all the time because of edits they put out with their buddies and their camera. There are not as many "film" skiers who have come out of an academy. At least not many if any that I know of, but please correct me if im wrong.

It isnt everything but since this sport has been blowing up I think that it certainly has a way bigger impact then before.

Nick Goepper sold candy bars on the school bus to get gas money to get to his local hill in Indiana. Nothing was given to this kid that he didn't earn. Yes, money definitely helps an athlete in any sport, but Nick Goepper is the perfect exception to your argument.

You could't be more right. If my dad wasn't the CEO of Warner Brothers there's no way I could afford the Spin Master 10,000's that help me do double corks. I love baby Jesus, I pretty good friends with my family, Captain America is definitely my favorite superhero, my robot technician is currently writing me some new code so I can do more unnatural tricks, and I've only been to Kansas City once but Sean Malto is the man. Damn thanks for clarifying my story.

I donno bout that money thing... I spend all my money on girls and candy. skiing is easy. just spin fast as fuck and land, on your little robot face. iRobot.

Bahahahaha I fucking love when orange names come in like that, fuck snap all you stupid children y'all just got told by goepper and schloppy

Our facts are starting to get pretty thin here admittedly.... Is Nick even an academy guy? Do you know if there are zero film guys from academies?

The problem is that if we uncovered one contest skier that wasn't in an academy and one film skier that was... we'd hit a pretty weak argument. I have a feeling if we could conduct a peer reviewed study, we'd end up in that position.

I just think that its a senseless idea to attack a comp skier for getting where they are from being rich. There's no logical base to hate on comp skiing for this fact.

Especially when you can hate on it for being ultra hucky with absolutely zero style. That is a great reason to hate it. You can also love how extremely technical it is, and how much it pushes the boundaries (progression?) of our sport.

I also really think that the most important thing we can all stick by is that if you truly believe in keeping the FREE in freeskiing... then let people do whatever the fuck they want.

You wanna go to an academy, olympic camp, take steroids and do triples all day every day? More fucking power to ya bro.

You wanna smoke weed all day, drink 40s and hit urban using the shittiest camera gear ever - making sure you're the only truly homeless skier out there? Fuckin' hot dog bro... get after it.

if this shit is truly freeskiing, we need to be free to experience it however the good god damn we choose.

I want to get to know you better. I demand to buy you at least two cocktails at the next event we are co-habitating.

I have a perfect idea.

You spin yourself right into the future... then get me some beta on who is taking down the Olympics.

I'll place us some heavy bets on the outcomes and we split the rev 50/50?

I totally approve of this response. Thanks a lot dude. Im lad we could share our common knowledge of your heritage with the newschoolers community.

Vegas wouldn't know what hit them. They could make a cheesy movie about it a few years down the road.

#1 slopestyle skiier in the world should have a reserved spot on this list. Slopestyle encompasses so many different skill sets and is arguable one of the most competitive aspects of this sport. So making #1 def deserves the right to be put in the fucking top 20 of this sport. I don't even care if he doesn't film, or that you don't like his style, getting ranked #1 is huge accomplishment and warrants making that stupid competition.

Btw since when did a skier who only films become superior to someone who decides to only compete? They should be held equal to one another, both take a lot of talent and dedication, one is not better than the other.

Well, it's common knowledge that this contest is also part popularity. It's also common knowledge that Goepper isn't popular. So why bother adding him?

Wallisch for SotY.

With Goepper, I met up with him at Mount Snow this past season and put together an Q&A for Freeskier

Fantastic dude, humble and willing to ski with everyone and anyone.

No circuit boards or binary code could be found.

I think he's being really strategic with his career right now and I think we'll see him in a lot more edits after.

http://freeskier.com/stories/nick-goepper-talks-x-games-state-of-freeskiing/2

An op-ed appeared in Powder Magazine written by Clayton Vila that

puts forth the argument that filming segments is a better expression of

freeskiing than say, competitions. How would you respond to that?

I

would 100 percent agree with him, that filming segments displays

freeskiing in a better light than contests. I mean, there’s no questions

asked that you can display more well rounded and creative and

interesting skiing with filming, which is why after this next year or so

I definitely want to dive into that and start doing more filming. You

know, it really is up to the individuals of the sport. There’s the

competitive side. You know, guys who want to go out and compete and do

well, and there’s also the guys who want to film and film segments. I

have the utmost respect to everyone who does both, who does one or the

other, and I think it’s really up to the individual, whatever he/she has

fun doing and whatever he/she enjoys success in.
- Goepper

Tell your robotic engineering tech to add a jetpack to your ironman suit so you can perform triple corks on flat ground (automatic win for everything) and program some code for ultra future spins, they make you jump into a parallel universe that always has fresh pow and perfect parks, way better than normal future spins. And your dad should make an IMAX 3D movie about skiing if he's CEO of warner bros. I would totally buy it for my in home IMAX theater

Tough to do anything but laugh at all the bullshit that threads like this generate. Nick is the man- he has worked his ass off to get where he is and he didn't have a polished, easy road laid out for him like many of you suspect. Freeskier is a joke and this contest and Nick being left out of it will be even more humorous when he ends up on an Olympic podium come February- something as old and timeless as the Greeks and athletic competition in general as opposed to the "winner" of this stupid contest which will have no relevance to anyone in the world outside of this petty niche we all live in.

Getting all this stupid shit about the money they make skiing or either if the make to be soty????

If youre not doing it for fun anymore then youre done with this.... Happy enough to spend it like scholpy in girls and candys, but thinking youre rockstar type skiers... Nah
