Hell no, you're much better off with a DVX, at least you can use that as a follow cam and fit it in a reasonably small bag. I saw an XL2 being used for filming skating once, the guy who was filming was using the handle and it looked like his arm was going to get ripped out of his socket.

Gimp actually is very good for a free program, probably one of the best ones out there. It's also open source, meaning you could probably find a couple of variations of it if you looked around. http://www.gimp.org/
