I don't know anything about the Burton one, but if you're planning on doing real backcountry the Heli Pro is really pushing it. I've done it with mine, but it sucks when you have to leave things behind because the pack is too small, then end up needing them 4 hours and 3,000' away from the car...

A ski is too big when the extra size starts becoming counter-productive. As long as you can comfortably ride them then you're ok--I like to err on the bigger side because short skis don't really have anything positive going for them.

I love everything about mine except for the ski carrying system. The top strap sucks horribly, and the only partial remedy I have found is tying a knot in the strap (if possible).

True, but in your case it looks like a bad mount that was done too close is to blame. But yeah, metal skis are way better.
