this plan seems legit if you have something else for insurance already. if your other insurance covers you, these guys will still cut you a check. how can that be wrong?
So wait...I pay $20 a month to get covered for something that any health insurance will cover anyway?
I just spoke with my doctor about it, and she said stuff like this is a sham designed to make people running the company rich.
ANd it makes sense...How about this. I will pay out the same ammounts the company says it will pay out, as long as you send me $10 a month. All I need is 300 people world wide to sign up, and I am making $3k a month. How many skiers out of 300 will blow a knee in any given month. Then think about how much it actually pays out. $1200? Thats nothing.
Now, if people were smart, they would get hurt and visit the hospital for the smallest stuff. Scratch your face on a branch...thats a laceration. Insurance will cover your ER visit, and you get $400 bucks.
In short, from someone who has seen the insurance and medical systems in action, save your money. its a scheme designed to cash in on people thinking "Oh, its only $20 a month"
I think they may be a visionary. However, I would be willing to spend a little more so that the payouts would actually cover the tests and care if something was to occur.
japollner ----You moron. If you are that one guy blowing that knee, that's not a bad deal. Of course insurance companies are making money - that's a reason for starting a business typically, but it's still a good deal. And going to hospitals after each minor scratch would be just plain stupid, since it would run their business down, meaning that when you blow your knee you would have to pay a lot of $$$$. Of course you can wait for xxx months and save that $20 a month for your operation, but for $2000s you have to save 100 months = your youth. And if your doctor is as stupid with his/her advice as it seems, get another doctor.
SUPPLEMENTAL insurance. this does not make sense if you don't already have regular insurance. for example, my brother blew his knee last year and had surgery in april. he has pretty good health insurance, which covered the majority of the costs for his surgery, crutches, braces, therapy, etc. he still owed a few thousands in out of pocket medical costs just due to the way all the bills are split up.
generally, whenever you see a doctor/specialist/whatever, you'll pay a $10-$100 copay, depending on who or what it is for. the way the bills get broken up, he paid a copay for the ortho surgeon, a copay of the anesthesiologist, a copay for some other person, and a copay for the facility. instead of one $100 copay, that's $400 right there. same deal for pretty much every appointment and rehab session he went to. that shit adds up. thats where XSI, paying $1200 for a blown knee, would come in handy. it wouldnt cover everything, but it would cover a pretty good portion of what's not covered by regular, decent health insurance.
justo, I agree, XSI MIGHT be ok if you already have good health insurance, however they way Jimbo talks about it makes it seem as though XSI is a legit health insurance plan that will cover all of your costs, which is definitely not the case. Case in point:
“…but it's also a bummer that it's inevitable that my team is every now and again going to tweak an ankle or blow a knee. And when that happens you just hope to hell that they've got insurance. And generally insurance isn't very cost effective; it's downright expensive. But with XSI there's basic policies starting at $17.30 per month.â€
-- Yes, you sure better hope to hell that they have insurance, and if it were me, I would hope to hell that they had insurance that would cover more than $1200 of a surgery that can easily cost $30,000 and up. He says, “with XSI there’s basic policies starting at $17.30 per month.†Notice how he says “basic policies†and NEVER ONCE states that XSI is a SUPPLEMENTAL insurance policy??? I did.
“With a pro policy at XSI, you're covered if you blow you knee. I hate to even talk about it in that sense, but it's reality. So if you blow you knee, you're covered. There might be kids reading this thinking, well what if I blow my knee in Europe? You're covered. What if I blow my knee in Europe while I'm competing? You're covered.â€
-- Again, you’re covered, you’re covered, you’re covered. Well, guess what? YOU AREN’T COVERED!!! Only a very small fraction of your bills are covered. He’s giving the totally wrong impression about what this “plan†really is.
“So when you have a policy like this, it's pretty amazing that you can get coverage starting at $17.30. The bottom line is that XSI is a business, and they’re in business to make money obviously, but unlike most insurance companies, they're not here to gouge anyone. There here to say, 'You know what brother? Here's a helping hand. Know that you can go out and just punch it and you can rest assured you have insurance.' It's peace of mind.â€
-- If this is the only health insurance plan you have, YOU MOST DEFINITELY CANNOT REST ASSURED YOU HAVE INSURANCE!!! It is NOT peace of mind and you cannot “go out and just punch it†because you are basically just as screwed if you do get injured and this is the only insurance you have. And yea, I do think they are here to take money from people who don’t know any better, which from the comments on this interview, seem to be a good portion of the NS population.
“So when you have a country that has insurance nightmares and lows and has run amok, it's a bright light when you have someone like XSI come along and offer affordable insurance to people who more often than not aren't qualified because of the dangerous lifestyle they lead. It's so easy to get denied by insurance providers now a days for that sort of thing, but with XSI you won't.â€
-- Of course you won’t get denied!!! They’re barely paying for any of your costs! They could care less. So go ahead, jump off a roof, they won’t care because again, they only have to pay for a tiny fraction of the total cost and they’re still getting your $20 a month, which pays off for them.
So yea, I think this whole thing is absolutely ridiculous and definitely not right for and will not be of much benefit to most of the people on NS. And to be honest, the whole idea of it and the fact that it is aimed at younger kids who are probably not educated on how insurance works, sickens me.
That article was one of the most deceptive pieces of advertising i've ever seen. NS knows when its being fucked over. Once this article sunk in and people looked that facts over in regards to what was actually said everyone realised they had been had.
But really its not jimbo's fault. These people have come to him with this business proposal knowing he's a man within the industry that has contacts and is respected. I think he should respond to the questions that have been raised and clarify what he originally said. If he mentioned once, just once in the interview (cough AD cough) the word supplemental then their wouldn't be a problem.
Has anyone actually signed up for this? and did you already have health insurance?
To the mods - do you guys think that this interview is not misleading? I would honestly like to know your opinion.
Hey all Newschoolers, my name is Robert Scott and I am the President of XSI. There seems to be some confusion about XSI and I want to address this directly for everyone. I personally created XSI because I, like all of our XSI employees, am an athlete and I got hurt boxing. Broke my right hand! No problem, right? I have major medical insurance. But even with really good coverage, it was still going to cost me several thousand dollars to repair my hand. It was only February and I was not even close to hitting my $5000 deductible. So, guess who was going to pay for my hand to be fixed? ME! 100% of the cost was mine! I started thinking, “Man, you can’t do this every month!†There has got to be a way to do what I want to do, like ski, snowboard, skate, etc. without having to break the bank. So, XSI was born. I have it! I believe in it! Thank you to Newschoolers for giving me the space to explain it to all of their readers. You guys are awesome!
First, I want to make it VERY, VERY plain: XSI is NOT major medical insurance! Major medical is the stuff you get to cover ACL surgery and paralysis, cancer, etc. We have made every effort to explain this on
our website and in all of our press releases and advertisements. If you have major medical, Great! But an accident, if covered, is still going to cost something out of pocket. And if you don’t have major medical, XSI will help.
Second, XSI was created for two reasons: to reduce athletes’ actual costs if they do have a major medical plan so they have the ability to participate in their sports without the fear of high deductibles, co-pays, or lost time from work. AND so that those athletes with pre-qualifying conditions, other health issues or just flat-out can’t afford a major medical plan CAN get some coverage.
Third, unlike many accident plans that do cost around $10, you do NOT need to have a major medical plan in order to get it! This is so important because XSI provides protection you can get quickly and easily even if you can’t afford or qualify for other insurance. Changes in health care policies have made it nearly impossible for people that are not covered under their parents or employers plan to get insurance if they have a history of injuries or pre existing conditions.
Fourth, unlike other accident plans there are VERY few exclusions! You can be a skier, rider, skater, or basically any other sport and get the coverage and get your claims paid. Many companies will deny your claim if injured while participating in “extreme†sports. With our PRO package there are even fewer exclusions!
Fifth, when you sign up with XSI you are not ever on your own. We have highly experienced, licensed insurance agents explain everything to you! When you join XSI they thoroughly explain exclusions, the claims process, the costs, and benefits. Our clients know the ins and outs of their coverage. We want to make buying, using, and keeping our clients as protected as possible as easy and fast as possible.
An example of how XSI works when covered by the Level 1 policy. Say your break your leg. You would get $300 for the ER, $150 for X-Rays, $2400 for the break, $100 for crutches and a $30 for each additional doctor visit. That’s a minimum of $2,980 paid directly to you. You can use that money to pay your co pay/deductible or pay towards your bill.
We want everyone who has any question to give us a call and ask for the details and fine print. We are constantly evolving and are working on introducing policies that will cover major injuries and surgeries.
Old or young, rich or struggling to get your season pass each year; XSI makes it possible to be protected
24 hours a day, seven days a week at a cost anyone can afford. That’s the bottom-line!
