I respect what Warren Miller has done for the media community as far as skiing goes. I personally have never been able to get into his movies and found them cheesy and annoying, but he has done a lot for the sport and industry.
However, in this interview, he really did come off as a pompous ass. Not saying he is such, but he came off as one.
Warren Miller and Stuart Evey (founder of ESPN) have been touring the country speaking at universities. Warren said a lot of those crazy funny quotes when he spoke in Missoula. Luv-loved it and laughed out loud when he said he could never keep up with his wife skiing!
Think we have Warren and Stuart's lecture at the private dinner event recorded. If I can find the file, I'll come back and post a public link to that recording.
Interesting read. Not all are of the internet generation as far as interviews. His record speaks louder than his words imho. Props to ns for giving credit where due.
that was a lame interview. it was way to formal. it seemed like he had better things to do. i didnt like the vibe at all. but its an interesting read none the less.
Warren Miller has pretty much change my life. As a little kid 4years old or so, I watch his movies all the time, all I wanted to do was ski. Because of his movies I'm now moved away from home and living my dream skiing the big mountains.
Just to update some of you that have made comments about Warren Miller being owned by Time Warner, it is not owned by Time Warner but it is owned by the Swedish company Bonnier Corporation.
warren miller is the man, but does the man really have to be so concise and formal when it comes to an interview with this generation? did he not realize who he was talking to? seriously, this is NS, don't attempt to work your way around freeskiing when you're having an interview with NS.
i understand what he means on how films arent as fun to watch... films more today are just a segment of someone skiing not the lifestyles of the people skiing like WM made his films to be..
Warren Miller made me the skier i am today, if it wasn't for his movies i would not have skied nearly as much.....and thus not had nearly as much skill. Im am now trying to persue a carrer in the ski industry, and it is partially because of him.
Nothing still makes me smile like a warren miller movie......not idea, not yeah dude, not the ski movies.....nothing compares to the old warren miller movies.
Thank you Warren Miller for everything you have done for the ski industry, and its is an awefull shame that you have not been in a film for the past four years.
One of my first memories of any ski film was a segment of Scot Schmidt in one of WM's films just slaying the shit out of of some serious terrain, plus a few good ol' Schmidt Schmear's tossed in for the mix. Have always loved his movies, and it was the same feeling every year, just incredible excitement and anticipation for the coming winter after every fall show.
As for people doubting that racers and freeskiers are only 5% of the total number, take a look at all the skier's that visit a major resort, especially the ones that only do it once or twice a year, the weekend warriors or the ones that live in Florida and take their one week a year, those are the big numbers of skiers. People on NS tend to think they are the centre of the world and the driving force in skiing and play a major part in the ski industry. We don't. Simple as that, we are a relatively small proportion of the total number and relatively young which makes us cheap as shit and therefore a pretty poor source of revenue. Freeskiing/big mountain do happen to be the most EXCITING types of skiing, and therefore act a a major marketing force, but in terms of actual financial role we all play in the grand scheme of things its not a huge amount (and money does equal power after all in the world of business).
And also, WM is not the average 25-35 year old company rep. He in well up there in age, and grew up in a much different time. Don't be surprised if he's not saying 'that shit is sick'.
I think I can feel myself starting to get burnt.....
