You americans....

+++++++++++honestly, i dont wanna offend anyone with the following thread+++++++++++

but theres a thing or two i'd like to ask. i made that football questions thread in "ski gabber" (yes, kill me) and there something came to my mind:

why are most sports, which are considered "american" (lets say basically football, baseball, basketball, icehockey) so damn complicated?

i know that sports evolve to put mismatches out of the rulebook and so it becomes more complicated over time...

the question might be more like this [a little exaggerated, so please calm down, take a breath and go on]:

why are damn complicated sports like those i mentioned earlier so famous in the US???

in the [worldwide opinion, hearsays, does not necessarily reflect the authors opinion] DUMB US???

because in most other sectors, whether they are nutrition, culture, lifestyle something "AMERICAN" equals to something EASY, LAZY, FAST, SIMPLE.

if you think those sports are confusing you should rethink your accusations and point them at yourself

its not that european sports arent complex. but as i said, in nutrition its fast food instead of fruits & vegetables, in culture its TV instead of books, you guys even invented the internet (or its precedessors) cuz you were to lazy to drive...

no, i really like american sports (maybe excluding all the breaks and intermissions), but they seem to me that theyre not fitting the general scheme of "the american way of life"

thus i live outside the us and cant really judge

The reason they have so many rules is because they are sports..such as in track you run...1 rule..not really a sport...football...tons of rules...a sport

I would say only football is very complicated of those three you listed. Hockey is almost like soccer on ice with skates and sticks, baseball is quite easy to understand if you watch it a few times, and basketball is pretty easy too.

But you are right about the last statement you had up there, europeans in general (not all of them!!!) thinks america is lazy. Unfortuneately only the fat and dumb americans are shown on TV in europe...

hahahaha. thats funny. we may be lazy, but when you grow up watching and playing theses sports, they dont seem complicated. also, sports are fun, so most people aren't lazy when it comes to sports.

complicated? are you retarded? obviously your not going to understand it right away thats why most people in the pros have been playing for there whole lifes. and ice hockey isnt really called an american sport ...

hes right. America has been suffering from affluenza while other countries mainly in europe have been riding extremely large growth cycles and are developing at an amazing pace. Because americans refuse to work for less than 7$ an hour (We should blame our government for this) outsourcing is putting americans out of business, we had it all in the 80s, we made our lives to complex(like our sports). soon when overconsumption era is over and we go into shock(depression), we will get our work ethic back to where it was when the first depression was ended, hopefully when this occurs it will not be too late. i will now go watch football highlights on my flatscreen plasma, check facebook on my macbook pro, and procrastinate studying because I want to pass my classes with as low a grade as possible.

The only American created sport listed was Basketball. And hockey is an American sport the premier league the NHL is based in America and the US is the sports epicenter. However a large number of players are not from the US.

And fuck the rest of the world who believes we are fat and useless when we dominate every Olympics, have the premier higher education system, and basically run the world. Ya we are slipping but we will come back. Bitch...

This thread is really lame. Obviously the only reason you made it is to call American's lazy. Your argument isn't supported well at all, doesnt really make sense, and draws a poor parallel.

Should someone make a thread asking why Europeans put so much time into making their beer, when they don't spend any time on personal hygeine?

The more I think about the argument you're trying to make, the more ridiculous it becomes. so you're saying:

"why are american sports complicated, when americans are lazy?"

well, everything in america is complicated. You don't think fast food is complicated? It's just complicated in different ways. If health codes and laws aren't followed to an absolute T, people get sued-- everything over here is complicated when it comes to "rules" and "laws"...

Your argument doesn't even really make sense, as you can see I tried to make sense of it and failed.

well, the thing is that cricket didn't originate as much of a sport. If i remember right, it started as more or less something to just pass the time by farmers, and the game was designed so that you can stop play, then resume after awhile..which is why some games last days

no, basically i asked: why are americans supporting such complex sports while looking for the easiest way everywhere else.

and honestly, making things easier is a good thing, it equals to development.

and you guys shouldnt take it too serious. i know that not everything is as bad as medias are making it look like. but america sure as hell lost a lot over the past decades. one of the financial crisis' reasons (as well as a lot of others) was the "american way" of using the money you have, no doubt about that...

and again, dont take it too serious...

I think you mean money we "don't have"

It's not that I'm taking things seriously, it's that I think "complicated sports vs. easy american lifestyle" is such a weird comparison, and doesn't really work/is a bit of a stretch.

Hey, you should be thanking us for being lazy enough to invent the internet so that you can start stupid threads on NS.

i mean they arent very complicated.

you could say that soccer is complicated....(i dont know anything about it and it seems a tad confusing)

just look at it from a different point of view

non american confusing.... cricket/soccer/jai-lai

i dont know

pretty sure the internet was created in switzerland by some crazy scientific research center (the kind that splits atoms n shit). basically they made the first private network

yeah this argument is ridiculous, i remember reading somewhere that the US is in fact the most athletic nation, i haven't been able to find it but when i do i will post it. Albeit we have a stereo type of being fat and lazy, but do you realize how big of a role sports play in our culture? Did you know we are the country with the most olympic metals? So now you can add ATHLETES to your little "AMERICAN" equals list.

This is by far one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. The internet was invented at CERN in Europe by a man named Berners-Lee (my girlfriend actually was on a team with his daughter), and you are retarded if you truly believe the motivation behind the invention and the betterment of the invention was so Americans wouldn't need to drive.

You are a douchebag.

But please, don't get offended by me calling you that. Asshole.

I thought the internet was invented in the US by the military or some defense division as a way of sending confidential information--

Either way-- doesn't matter who invented it, the point is that it obviously wasn't invented as a way to avoid driving...haha.

You are a fool and a claimer.

The first practical internet was created by the defense department in the US you fuck and if I remember correctly the CERN labs created clickable links. You ass fuck.

go fuck yourself you claimer fag.

wikipedia

The ARPAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) developed by ARPA of the United States Department of Defense, was the world's first operational packet switching network, and the predecessor of the global Internet.

and before i get kicked out of this site: for its role in the progression of skiing (and a lot of other things) i will remain thankful to the united states and truly defend their colours and dignity.

yes, it was a risky call. throwing all the fat, ignorant, war monging people in the same bowl as you, thats not correct, never. again i apologise if i upset the people of the united states of america

who cares who invented the internet. the guy said that the internet was invented because lazy fat americans didnt want to drive...

Fool and a claimer? I think not.

ARPA was a precursor to the internet.AARP was a computer network, true, but it was impractical on a large

scale, very few computers had it, and it wasn't technically for

civilian use.

Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web essentially as we know it today. He is considered the grandfather of the internet because of the work he did. How about you look it up?

As we're on the subject of americans being lazy, I think some people might be interested to know that the average American works about 20% more hours than the typical resident of Western Europe.

(Source, N Gregory Mankiw, Macroeconomics)

well, something internet sadly isnt able to is showing sarcasm. and i exaggerated a lot to bring my point, its discussed, thx for the participation.

honestly, how much would have answered if i wasnt that aggressive? none, close to none? so i reached my goal just by loosing a few karma points

And seriously, what a stupid thread. Did you really say that we invented the internet because we were too lazy to drive? And if this is the case, then we were just trying to use less gas.

Americans did invent the internet, it was called darpanet.

Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web while working at CERN.

(two different things la)

a last try, the internet thing was a metaphor.

1. we all appreciate the internet, its a good thing and one of the most important inventions in history

2. but if you want to be snippy, you can say that all inventors are just lazy people who want to make their lifes easier by their inventions.

= making things easier --> good thing, but can turn out bad if you lose control (which i can undoubtedly say did happen in the us in some sectors and wondered why it wasnt in sports)

well thats it, thats all. thx guys, and as we say here, breath through your pants

I am Canadian, and i have played football my entire life. Not many people take football too seriously up here in Canada (hockey is our sport). Even at the university level Canadian football is pretty slack in comparison to football in the US, but I bet we have way more fun than they do!

Football in the US has simply turned into a business. as a kid going into high school, the majority of American families EXPECT their kid to go play football, become a superstar, get a scholarship to college, go to college and get an easy degree, graduate (optional) and get drafted into the NFL (exaggeration). This is only one side of the coin...

Football in the US has become one of the most (if not THE most) profitable businesses. Football is a sport for gamblers. Obscene amounts of money are made from gambling on football, whether it be at the professional level, collegiate level, and even high school level. Combine this with the ridiculous revenue from advertisements and endorsements... football doesn't seem to be about the GAME anymore, it's all about the money. A few years ago the NFL implemented the challenge system, which is really just another excuse for them to blast the viewer with commercials.

Don't get me wrong, I am a die hard football fan, and I am die hard Buffalo Bills fan (tear), but I have the hardest time watching a game of NFL football because of the disgusting amount of commercials and questionable officiating (I still think they "rig" games to make them more exciting for gamblers).

Although the NFL is loaded with the most talented players, it is far from a pure representation of (what I consider) to be the game of football. Watch some CFL or even CIS football and you will see people out there playing for the love of the game, without the pressures you see in the NFL.

thx for this

and btw. what the hell happened in the jets game? man if the bills would simply run out the clock (i no its kinda "unsportsmanlike" and everybody would love to win a game with a final TD) which has become so usual, the pats would be infront of em. damn

Don't worry guys, he's just angry because Michael Phelps won more gold medals than his entire country.

you're kind of wrong and right.

arpa isnt/wasnt impracticle because what it did is still used today. reverse dns lookup came from arpa and wouldnt exist if they completely removed arpa

arpa created the domain system and is considered the internet-infrastructure.

what berners-lee did was connect what they were doing and his ideas and make it globally possible. without arpa doing their thing 30 years before berners-lee, he wouldnt have been able to do what he did. arpa basically did the networking and structural side of things, and he made it possible for everyone, and that is why he is connected to the inventor of the internet. people always need a name to associate an invention with, and that is why he was rewarded with internet inventor

The fat 75% of us americans doesn't have to do sports because the athletic 25% of us americans do it so they can watch. I'm not a fat, fast food eating, gas guzzling SUV driving (i do drive an SUV) American. That is tha rep that we get from europe and a lot of tha world. I'm not tryin' to be a dick at all when i say that not all americans are tha same and keep that in mind. But i totally see how you percieve this.

Here are my theories on why Buffalo called the play action pass on second-and-5 rather than simply giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch who was having a monster game:

1) that play-action pass is a routine completion under any normal circumstance, BUT the Jets sent the blitz, and it just happened to be the PERFECT blitz to stuff the play action (backside pressure from a CB).

JP Losman should not have had the ball in his hands in that situation, he is notorious for stupid turnovers. If Edwards were QB in that game and in that situation, the Bills would be celebrating a victory right now.

2) Maybe the coaching staff was trying to do JP Losman a favor by letting him throw. JP Losman is a free agent next year, and heis trying to build a "resume" right now. Maybe the coaches were trying to throw him a bone by giving him some easy completions on that drive.

Marshawn Lynch should have had the ball that entire drive. He was unstoppable all game, so why get away from the run game?

The Bills coaching staff baffles me some times.

i no what you mean. but behind every image, behind every reputation, theres truth somewhere. so you can say that i was generalising & exaggerating but not that i was lying.

and believe me, i have nothing against countries/races/agegroups/genders in general. but you cant get true answers without teasing them out by being a little aggressive or whatsoever.

Good call about tha Marshawn thing. They shoulda just let him pound it away. He's a beast.

they shoulda put leodis in at back! he's nasty.
