Ya know what pros could do to help the sport?

Billiards.

Well I am talking about the real well off ones like Jon or whateva. But they should take off like 1000 dollars off their yearly sponsor salary so that, sayyy, 3 more rippers could get free skis. 1000 bucks could seriously make 2 shreds seasons that much better.

Nice idea man, but who would decide who the skis would go to, maybe set up some kind of charity for it and distribute it around for underpriveleged kids?

Naw fuck that. It would go to more sponsorships. Kids who slay and deserve it, theyd send there video in for the "Get part of Tanner Halls $1000 that were not going to give him this year fund". Or it would just open up more room for shreddahhhs. Tanner or Jon or whatever could have there own picks of kids who slay but don't have anything.

Being a pro at the level of Jon or Tanner requires a lot of work, and is the result of a lot more work to get to where they are.

I would much rather they keep what they deserve, despite the fact that it might seem like a trivial amount compared with their overall salary, than to simply give it to someone is "killing it."

This goes back to the reason for sponsorship: to sell product. While they may be sick skiers, that alone means nothing to a company unless they can turn their excellent skiing into product sold. Jon and Tanner do that on a very large basis, with things like the X-games, ridiculous video segments, and putting on their own events and video-blogs in Jon's case.

It just doesn't make sense to take dollars from people who work really hard at what they do and should be rewarded properly and give the money to someone who is killing it, but not part of their team or any thing else.

That said, if Jon or Tanner decides to send me free skis, I'll accept them with gratitude.

i read an article in ski or skiing a few months ago about mike douglas and pro $ in skiing, he said apparently only like 20 guys in the world are making real money. He estimated his earnings at about 200,000 a year, and considered hjimself third in earnings behind jon and tanner. but the major point of the article was to say that pro skiers dont have a future unless they really know how to work the industry. pro skiers need to horde all the money they can when they are getting it becuase the usually dont have an education and wont get a ton of good real world job experience so their ability to make money for when they are older is very low. i think it was brant moles they used as a major example, he was on top of the big mountain ski world 8 years ago, had lots of money and endorsements and was doing very well, then got hurt and now has nothing.

Having Jon or someone take 200 bucks out of his salary to give a really good skier who can't afford skis, skis would be better marketing for the company than him buying some alcohol that no one but him and his girlfriend sees. Kids would love that pro. And 200 bucks wouldn't mean anything to a guy who makes 10,000 dollar bets aye?

+2 so many kids here on ns bitch and moan about how poor they are. but when you think about it, if you ski you got the funds to afford to ski.

i totally agree that a fund should be set up for underprivileged youths, because there are so many deserving people that cant afford our sport.

you wouldn't possibly be able to find and post a link to that article would you? i think that would make for an interesting read.

haha yea I actually read the same article a couple months back when I was waiting in the orthopedists office waiting to get my knee looked at. it makes a real good point, its not just about pounding ass on the slopes you gotta be a business man too

If some pros were to donate skis to kids who could not afford them more than likely they cant afford a lift ticket too

agreed.

there is so much more that goes into skiing besides just skis. U got lift tickets, boots, bindings, the clothing then if you live like 30 min from a resort and there is no bus system that goes around the town then gas cost so much.. gas is 3.75 a gallon in Wv

no, sorry, i read it in either Ski or Skiing midwinter one day while my car was getting an oil change at the subaru dealership, but you might be able to find it if you check out one of the magazines websites and search mike douglas or something, it was mostly about him and his extra work he does for salomon

you're a dick. how would that help the industry? does "the sport" need these "shreddahhhs" that can't afford skis? "does the sport" need more sponsorships? there will NEVER be a shortage of rippers, or kids getting sponsored. if they rip well enough then they'll get sponsored. if they can't afford skis then GET A DAMN JOB. so kids that slay deserve skis more than those who don't? sorry. gay idea.

does the sport need more elite athletes? YES

does the sport need more sponsorship? YES

the more elite athletes the better as they push each others ability thus making the sport better to watch, and in time making it more marketable

so in short, it is you who is wrong

uh......if they're "elite athletes" then they'll get sponsored on their own without the proposed charity sponsorships. hello mcfly? try again.

on a side note i love how everyone talks about how our sport NEEDS this and NEEDS that. it's almost as if skiing is on the verge of becoming extinct. the sport is doing just fine. i have plenty of sick equipment to choose from that will keep me warm and get me down the hill, and i have plenty of sick skiers to watch in the films. so why does our sport NEED all this recognition and attention and blah blah blah blah blah. what's the whole breakthrough that we're waiting for?

Ive been in the past 3 X games and i get paid a grand total of 20,000 a year, I also spend most of this on my travels and living expiences and i dont even pay rent(live with parents), hopefully i wont still be there next year but you kids have to understand there are grips of pros that dont make shit, then there a a few who make all the money, and that is why it hurts some of us when we get on here and see shit talking on our movies or park shoots cause we dont deserve it.
