XGames and Halo (from the eyes of a halo playing skier)

To start- the xgames have been hosting video game turnys for over a year now, this isnt new. It was a problem from day 1 and it looks like its here to stay since they've stuck with it.

The real issue that youre all ignoring is that halo was never supposed to be on live TV. It was streamed on twitch, youtube and ESPN3(online). No one who cared about the halo turny was watching ESPN live, it was a massive mistake for them to put it on the air; the people watching ESPN wanted to see skiing.

Stop acting like the halo community fucked you over so badly, no one asked for this and no one expected this. Every single aspect of this years xgames was garbage. Timing, replays, jump maintenance (yay triples.. and oh, straight big airs..) etc.

You know what you guys should be pissed about? The fact that skiers arent voicing their opinions. Maybe if we promoted our industry as hardcore as the gaming community has, we would reap the benefits. The Xgames dont give a shit about you or me, they care about our $$$. This isnt the olympics or a charity, the xgames are massive industry at this point. If you want to actually see change then you need to boycott or speak with your wallet.

Its seriously petty and embarrassing seeing you all bitch on here, on Facebook, in opinion articles etc. No ones paying attention that your feelings got hurt.

The halo turny had amazing numbers and im stoked to see it coming back. Id rather them host halo then some weebo shit like LOL or Dota #weback

Do I think halo should have been in winterX? No. But in the same hand, I dont think things like snowmobile jumping should be there. But I dont bitch about that because I know some people like it, I just dont watch it. In that same sense I can see why you are all mad, because skiing got cut off by something you didnt want to watch. But that brings me to the start- gamers didnt know or want it on there either. Be pissed at the xgames, not "esports"

The entire halo community is ecstatic with how well everything went with the xgames and only had positive criticism. Instead of bitching like the entitled 12 year old skiers that you are, be constructive, like the obnoxious halo 12 year olds.

TLDR-

Gamers didnt want this

Skiers didnt want this

Dont blame the gaming community because of the choices that xgames made. None of you would care that halo was in the xgames had it stayed online like what they originally said.

I want to apologize to everyone here on behalf of the halo community. We didnt want this or even know it was happening. We were happy with our online stream. We dont know why they chose to air old highlights a day late. Please dont blame and punish us for a programing mistake. I hate coming on here and seeing everyone freaking out. We both can have our cakes and eat them too; even if one is a pie and not technically a sport.

I don't know if I agree with you that that the gaming community didn't want this. Seeing how they got their panties in a wad after Kristi Leskinen told the truth on twitter.

Less so they didnt want it, more so they had no idea it was being played on ESPN.

Everyone Ive talked to said the same thing, Twitch, youtube or ESPN3. A day after the final happened. Completely pointless

Didnt even see that tweet till right now, but holy shit the replies are funny. You cant expect people to be nice if you talk shit in the first place, her panties were in a wad to start. I dont really consider pro-gaming a traditional sport, but a lot of people say the same thing about pingpong and skiing. Comes down to opinion.

A lot of the replies are pretty honest tho "we do this for a living, no need to be disrespectful"

But the ones where people are posting their gold medals and saying shes not even verified are amazing. Snipedown posted a picture of his blistered finger hahahaha these guys are pro e-shit talkers, not wise to kick a hornets nest like that

Thanks for pointing that out, its fucking hilarious.

But at the end of the day they are still nerds who sit in dark basements playing video games 18 hours a day and drinking mountain dew code red, while fucking solid 7s and making just enough to survive... they arent freakish athletes, or freakishly intelligent, so IMO, unless they are good people, they really dont deserve respect.

Oh, and you forgot that half the "skiing community" doesnt want X-games to be a part of freeskiing.

Joss got super butthurt about it on twitter. I couldn't help think if you like skiing so much who the fuck cares if you're televised or not. It's all about fame anymore. Fuck the love of the sport I HAVE TO BE FAMOUS.

youd rather watch someone play halo than jump a sled??

haha fuck that. sleds are fuckin sick. have you ever even jumped one yourself?

i almost fear the day i buy a sled, as that will be the day that i start doing a lot less skiing.

Skiers just got mad that slopestyle was cut by e sports. It didn't happen on the stream I was watching, but I do get why everyone would be pissed. But it's not the esports fault, it's ESPN's fault. I think you are all misdirecting your hate towards esports. XGames has a very long list of sports they tried to implement, so don't be mad because they try something new (they will always try as long as it makes them money),but be mad because they are bad. Please don't hate something new just because ESPN fucked up. Remember when freesking was also a "new" thing ?

Quit saying esport, its not a sport. Its just a bunch of fat lazy socially awkward 30 year olds that have no real life skills

Exactly. Look at it from the opposite end of the sectrum. How would you feel if one of your Esports tournaments decided to add Skiing or some shit.

No one ever got laid for their halo skills.

So OP, take you're video came controller deep in your moms basement.

I think what phil-x is trying say is not that it is ok for the xgames to not show certain regular xgames events so that the halo games get aired, not that it mattered this year anyways..., he is just saying to hate the x-games not the halo players.

Andrew Napier said it best:

"Step 1: Put millions of $$$ into an event.

Step 2: Force all skiers to compete in dangerous conditions

Step 3: Watch them crash, straight air, or get injured.

Step 4: Air Halo instead.

Step 5: Spread Stoke"

Although some may not agree that X Games "forced" skiers to compete in dangerous conditions, these skiers are expected to perform their best on one of the sports larger stages for their sponsors, fans, etc and for that I believe they are indeed "forced" in a way to compete.

It's this logic that Napier publishes that makes me agree with OP. It is the X Games that is at fault. I strongly believe that "esports" don't have a place at X Games, however if they were not aired overlapping another event I would not be upset.

TLDR: Fuck X Games.

Yeah I thought it was weird that they would cancel Snowboard Superpipe, then under the same conditions go straight to Skiing Big Air.

I respect professional hotdog eaters a hell of a lot more than gamers. Anyone can BXR a noob in Halo, but I'd like to see any of you put down 50+ franks. That takes some serious talent.

Did you have to find that out for yourself recently too? That's no fun.

Oh well, there is always a basement stocked full of mt dew, and an internet full of newbs to keep you happy :)

Oh the lolz. People still care that much about X Games? And if you want to throw zero spins in a comp you willingly joined, who cares if Halo airs over it? Plenty of zeros out there filmed better on YouTube. You can't on one end hate on Halo players when they didn't choose to get aired over an event, especially when everyone who watches X-Games just says it should be about the "styyyyyle" man. Its like acting like a baby/child who only wants their old toy when someone else takes it. The Halo championship has like $2 million poured into right now. I wouldn't give a fuck if some internet basement dweller called me a video game basement dweller. Thats serious money.

X games at one point could have been considered the highest form of extreme sports competition and has been pretty important to both snowboarding and skiing...and "willingly" isn't quite true, they're expected to compete by their sponsors. There's not a lot of hate towards halo players (besides those who defend it as a sport. It's not a sport. Not even remotely close to a sport)

People are pissed off cause athletes were forced to compete in shitty conditions with terrible transitions. And to add insult to injury halo was aired over some of the most dangerous sports in the world. If I'm risking my life I sure as hell wouldn't want a video game being aired over me.

And shut the fuck about style you fucking idiot. People want style because it's not enjoyable to watch less than half the runs in these completions be landed. Triples are impressive as fuck. But I'd rather watch everybody land more "stylish" tricks and actually land rather than see them throw their bodies, hurt themselves, and not land.

You're a idiot and you should gtfo

halo is dope, skiing is dope

don't let ESPN's nonsense get to you, they always pull stupid shit at x games. it's not the halo players' fault....it's about money you tards, ESPN will do what they think will make the most money

can we please get back to what's important? im way better at skiing and halo than everyone else in this thread

Do you know what it takes to promote and play a video game, and what it takes to promote and play skiing on the mountain?

Also it's freaking halo why cant they pick a good video game.

Haha. The style argument does matter. Participants shouldn't get mad if its all about the passion and the purity of FREEskiing. If everyone wants to be all pure and keep skiing edgy and to its roots then you shouldn't care if it isn't aired. All I'm saying is that the uproar is stupid. I generally watch X-Games but I understand the reasoning for airing something different.

You think X-Games doesn't know people come on here and continually bash it EVERY YEAR, not just this year. What will they decide to air then? You think they like having the comp flouted by pros who do want to keep it stylish? Don't bite the hand that feeds you. You don't need to give me a fucking lecture on the sport you dumbfuck. My point is you can't have your cake and eat it too.

And lay off the fucking conditions. Its an extreme sport outside in the fucking snow. Every year there is some type of complaint. Go watch some old videos and educate yourself. Skiers have been hucking their meat off sketchy features before they got paid to do so and wrecked themselves back then too.

Well first off, good read. thanks for that. BUT, the reason that it pisses most people off that "Esports- Halo" is in X Games is because it is rewarded the same medal as the actual extreme sports where athletes are risking their lives to get gold/silver/bronze. This includes snowmobiling, which is extreme, and requires athleticism, unlike flicking a couple of buttons on a remote control... I suggest you read Todd Richards interview with ESPN that wasn't aired.

aIl this has me thinking we should have a NS-wide halo tournament

from there, we take the top players and form our own team to compete next year in the xgames, win, and effectively take them down from the inside

TL;DR

1. create NS halo team

2. make it to xgames halo tournament

3. compete in xgames halo tournament

4. ???

5. profit

As someone who works in the broadcast/live sports industry, how do you "accidentally" air halo?

How was there not producers and directors freaking the hell out? I've heard more yelling and swearing when cameras aren't cut properly coming from directors, they'd make kids thy just discovered swearing look bad.

In TV, this isn't an "oops, let's roll with it", it's a huge thing that can end up costing broadcasters, hosts, and sponsors a ton of money.

In the tv industry, if something doesn't go to air, the fines are in the millions. I understand that x-games and its host broadcaster have multiple events going on, with set schedules, but still; to air a different feed? Especially when one thing is a stream, and the other is a live television event?

Something else is going on there....
