Uh, check your modern definition of what "freeskiing" is, then you can attempt to justify this point to me.
And Scott Schmidt's career was entirely founded on his jump on the "extreme" skiing bangwagon. When he originally started filming with Warren Miller and those guys, he was one of the few skiers at the time jumping off of shit when everyone else was trying to go as fast as they could, pursuing a race career. Maybe not "creativity" in its purest sense, but at least diversification from the norm at the time.
Creativity may not have been the goal at the time, but looking back on it, those people that were willing to do things differently are the ones with the largest hands in shaping our sport.
