alright, i think you are all looking way, way too far into this. here is my two cents:
skiing, it's a sport, it's a sport that's been around for a hell of a long time, and it's constantly evolving as to what is possible to do on a pair of skis. it's gone from a form of transportation to a form of exploration to a form of a fun past time. A few decades ago it got popular enough for people to erect lifts, teach others, and turn it into a sport. Now, it's changed drasticly over the past few decades, it's had it's up's and down's, and has evolved to what it is today. Lets just stop for a second and think about what skiing really is today. Is it any different then it was in the 60's? or 70's, or anytime between then and now? If you ask anyone who was a skier in those times, they would probably tell you that it is infact no different. The act of skiing still remains the same.
Now, I (as well as all of you) are new to the sport of skiing (if you look at it from skiing's terms), and I would like to think that most of you were like me, with the fact that you began skiing in the late 80's to early 90's. If you are like me in that respect then think about what skiing was like in the early to mid 90's. It wasn't "cool", and yet, we still skied, why? Because, as I said before, the act of skiing has always remained the same, and you know what? it's fun as hell. So what if snowboarding was 'cooler', so what if our clothes were a little off, did any of that really matter? no, all that mattered was having fun on the hill.
Yes, things in the skiing world have changed in the past 10 years into what we have today, but that's not to say that it has changed from good to bad, or from bad to good, it's just changed, like it has many, many, many times before. The point I'm trying to make is that whatever the cool thing is at the time within the skiing world, whatever image is concidered the new thing, it really doesn't matter. If you like it, then good for you, do it. If you don't like it, don't worry about it, don't buy from the company that doesn't represent you. The ski industry is the biggest it has ever been in the history of skiing, there is an image and product out there from everyone of all walks of life from the OG to the punk to the emo to the grey hair. The bottom line is that skiing is still skiing, so why do you gotta be bitching about stuff that doesn't even matter? I mean really, think about it.
