Will the ski culture ever take its head out of its ass? Read on..

so THIS is the kid who knows EXACTLY what a skier is suppossed to be....

dude.. i agree with you... just let people do their thing.. does it really bother you that bad?? who cares man, let people live their lives the way they want.. if they like to portray a certain image then let them portray that immage..

just think about this, "it is what it is"

I sent you a message, and I'll reiterate what I said to you here. It's not unique styles and expression I have a problem with, its the mimicking of other styles that have established credibility of their own right to try and bring credibility to our own sport. You really think your gangsta talk is really going to make you cool and make our sport look cool? Your skill and unique style should make it look cool. Credibility should come from our sport and not from an outside source. That's what I have a problem with.

Skiings doing just fine, noone talks a certain way for the sake of skiing, "THATS JUST THE WAY I TALK" its fools like you making a note of everything people do "wrong", If you ski good thats all thats going to matter. If someone acts like an idiot and cant ski LET THEM, there just some idiot who cant ski.

I kinda agree. Skiers used to be different just because they skied park. Now, to be different, people have gone and started dressing weird. I think the culture needs to realize that we dont need to be outrageous and crazy anymore, as skiing is pretty much accepted now as a legit sport compared to snowboarding. Just ski, thats all. And if you want to act getto and wear jerseys and chains, go right ahead. But I will laugh at your foolishness.

i like Line's site. The style of the design is on its way out, but to

me it looks fun. In my mind, skiing is about fun, not image nor

progression. It would be a lie to say I only ski for myself; I like

showing off under the lift as much as the next guy, and I try to dress

with the current trends, but the basic reason why I ski is that it's the most

fun sport I know of.

The problem is that not everybody is a really good skier. If you're really good, you can wear whatever you want. You can throw unpopular tricks. And people will still be impressed. That's how these trends get started. But if you're not an exceptional skier, you need something to make you cool/good/different/popular. What makes you resemble an exceptional skier better than dressing like one?

You could argue that it is the responsibility of the pros to progress the sport in a good professional direction. But that's not fun. Nobody actively thinks of the future of the ski industry when they ski. When you hit a jump, are you asking yourself if the trick you're about to do is progressing the industry in the right direction? I doubt it. It just wouldn't be fun.

Some of the current trends in the ski industry are ridiculous. So I'm going to kick back, laugh at their silliness, shake my head, and shred the mountain for the fun of it.

wow i completely disagree with you about the snowboarding thing, first of all, who cares about their web site, and second of all, snowboarders do that ghetto thing more then skiers do, have u ever seen "finger on da trigger productions" we dont compare to their "ghettoness"

who.....

the........

fuck............

cares...................

i hate how people rant like this and think they are being original/doing something productive.

your right to an extent, of cousre skis these days and ski companies are going to have wierd designs cuz it appeals to a younger crowed, its really more of a marketing thing then having their heads up thier asses.

yea i totally agree with that but i dont listen to rap infact i hate it i listen to a lot of rock, i dont wear baggy shit to be a gangster i have one baggy sweatshirt cuz it was a line sweatshirt on sale for $20 and it only came in large, i didnt realize how big it would be on me im only a meduim, and i just do what i want when i ski or do anything, i dont have snowboarders or skaters or anything infact i do both some people need to lighten up, not to piss people off or anything i hate doin that on this site its super pointless

who cares whaqt other people do and how others dress? does this have any affect on your individual skiing experience? I don't think so? I live in Ohio and go to school in the ghetto...it really is the ghetto and I don't act gangster but a lot of the kids at my school do. this doesnt affect me in any way so I dont care? same thing goes for skiing

you cant be "gangsta" unless your from the mothercountry...in that sense ill own each and everyone one of you bitches!

Kids need an image to jump on the bandwagon with, its in their nature. At school everyone in a certain band of friends with similar interests will dress the same. Its group dynamics. Gangsta is a phase that will pass. People dress in 80s stuff cos its funny to give up all inhibitions while having fun so dont knock that.

I'm not a fan of Gangstawangsta style and I laugh my head off when I see people taking it too far.

Remember, pimps are morally only one step up from pedophiles.

you're talking about young people. by the time that people are in their mid to late-20s or so, there is a tendency to chill and just develop a personal style for everything (not just skiing).

deal with the fact that young people are going to be into trends, they are developing a personal identity. i think every person i've seen on a mountain in a jersey was a teenager. i don't judge.

yeh i think u need to pull your head out of your ass.

is your idea of progression everyone where the same godamn thing and donig the same ttricks?

no its people have their own style and doing tricks they want, where is the individual part of the sport if someone wears somethign different they get ripped on? there is none its bullshit where what you want and ski how u ski. and as for comparing it to snowboarding, snowboarding has even more styles u gotta ghetto like tech nine u got everything so unless u want to tell snowboarders to stop being unique as well then shut the fuck up.

and as for u saying everyone is from aspen i was born and raised in dc kid so maybe u were born in some little mountain town and u dont have any idea of the difference in culture all over the us then stop fucking talking man.

one last thing to conclude, everyone stop bitchin about what other people are wearing a just ski. i think that is the only thing that is important ski, have fun, wear what you want and do what you want, but just go out and fuckin ski man, get off ur computer stop bitching about what other kids are doing just because your a ignorant dumbass and cant except that other people have different values and different styles and different images and just go out and fuckin kill it man. unless of course you think what you wear is more important than skiing, because that sure is how it seems.

fag

ya and no i mean were in this stagew now but i think its good for the skiing industry, i there have been different stages, that disco ski dancing stage to the racing stage and were the new stage and are about to blow... i do feel every freeskier should be able to carve well, moguls well pwder well and trees well

KZA, I've been all over the US, Europe, and Asia so without boring you, I'd like to think I know a little bit about cultures.

Some of you need to go back and re-read what I wrote, because its going over almost all of your heads. Or don't, for most of you you're just looking for an argument anyways.

Let me try to put it back again in plain english. This is not something that has been discussed before. I am NOT ragging on about how im "tired" of different styles. I might be, but thats not the point here.

I am saying that I wish a culture grown entirely out of skiing existed, not a ski culture grown entirely out of whatever is popular at the time in the mainstream. I can't respect skiers who don't respect themseves by trying to legitimize a sport with a pop culture that has no relation.

Again many of you will throw me shit, and thats fine, its over your heads. I'd just thought id share my grievance.

honestly kid your rediculous, maybe this is over the rest of the ski communities head and your some ultra smart fag but how do you expect skiing to grow purely out of skiing? are you saying the kids who ski should pay no attention to any other things their intrested in? cuz that seems a little rediculous. and tight pears and baggin pants is pop culutre, its just what kids are intrested in. i listen to plenty of music listened to hardcore and punk for a while and rap to. listen to gangsta rap underground shit anything its music. if i chose to make edits to this and wear baggy clothes i dont think that means that im trying to legitimize the sport by tryign to be cool it means i ski, i listen to rap, and i prefer baggier ski clothes. im in no way trying to legitimize shit and just cuz u dont approve of it doesnt mean i dont respect myself, i coiuld care less what toher people think about our sport because ive gotten used to people not caring for it.

and thats great share your grievence but try and think about how u ski an the shit you do not how the rest of the ski community decides to ski and do

i really wish threads like this would stop. people are always jumping on the bandwagon of hating the image of skiing. i am pretty sure half of these people where baggy clothes and try and act a steezed as possible.

who the hell cares what you look like when you ski as long as you have a fucking good time? if you want to act gangster, then go for it, but have a good time...

not done yet, so if you hate the "image of skiing"(if there is such a thing) then throw out some ideas of how you would change it. if you don't like a ski companies website because it promotes the wrong image, then tell them to change it. they will probably not care because they paid someone to design it and liked the outcome. also, if you don't like someones ski jacket then tell the company that made and designed because it's not the consumers fault for buying something that is probably reasonably priced or offers features that they need. i dunno, i have never seen a super gangster skier hating and yelling at other skiers where i ski. maybe it's different where you live

i think the image is funny sometimes, but it can get excessive, thug steeze in movies pisses me off a little, but if its just a little ghetto it adds flare, and the neon colors - well i don't know, but the pro's wear them so everyone wants too - most of this image is perpetuated on the east coast, because we're too obsesed with newschooling that we've forgoton what real skiing is, not that newschool is fake, i think newschool is the balls, but RESPECT big mountain steeze, those guys are the real skiiers

I agree with your post.

As far as cultural-identity goes, there is none.

This is a sport created solely on the idea of CREATIVITY. Those pioneers of ours that were jumping off of cliffs and shit- CREATIVITY. Originally dressing "gangster" or whatever the fuck you want to call it - originally CREATIVITY (compared to the common image of skiers at the time).

I think it's actually close to hilarious how a sport that exists because a few people were willing to take chances, has so many people that are absolutely terrified of being themselves or representing themselves differently.

I was actually going to write an article on this. But your thread beat me too it. I might anyways. I think this issue is important, in terms of "community/scene" [the most toxic, yet necessary, terms that exist in skiing.]

alright, i think you are all looking way, way too far into this. here is my two cents:

skiing, it's a sport, it's a sport that's been around for a hell of a long time, and it's constantly evolving as to what is possible to do on a pair of skis. it's gone from a form of transportation to a form of exploration to a form of a fun past time. A few decades ago it got popular enough for people to erect lifts, teach others, and turn it into a sport. Now, it's changed drasticly over the past few decades, it's had it's up's and down's, and has evolved to what it is today. Lets just stop for a second and think about what skiing really is today. Is it any different then it was in the 60's? or 70's, or anytime between then and now? If you ask anyone who was a skier in those times, they would probably tell you that it is infact no different. The act of skiing still remains the same.

Now, I (as well as all of you) are new to the sport of skiing (if you look at it from skiing's terms), and I would like to think that most of you were like me, with the fact that you began skiing in the late 80's to early 90's. If you are like me in that respect then think about what skiing was like in the early to mid 90's. It wasn't "cool", and yet, we still skied, why? Because, as I said before, the act of skiing has always remained the same, and you know what? it's fun as hell. So what if snowboarding was 'cooler', so what if our clothes were a little off, did any of that really matter? no, all that mattered was having fun on the hill.

Yes, things in the skiing world have changed in the past 10 years into what we have today, but that's not to say that it has changed from good to bad, or from bad to good, it's just changed, like it has many, many, many times before. The point I'm trying to make is that whatever the cool thing is at the time within the skiing world, whatever image is concidered the new thing, it really doesn't matter. If you like it, then good for you, do it. If you don't like it, don't worry about it, don't buy from the company that doesn't represent you. The ski industry is the biggest it has ever been in the history of skiing, there is an image and product out there from everyone of all walks of life from the OG to the punk to the emo to the grey hair. The bottom line is that skiing is still skiing, so why do you gotta be bitching about stuff that doesn't even matter? I mean really, think about it.

you my friend, deserve the ns-kick-in-the-nuts award.....hopefully from the kick in the nuts you will become sterile, and never pass on your ignorant genes

Everyone is talking about "just have fun" and "let people do what they want". But the point is, kids who act like gangsta ass losers have no fuckin clue about skiing. That is called posturing and is done because insecure, juvenile dipshits can't get laid. Real fun would involve laughing and smiling, not trying to act like you're tough when you weigh 95 lbs and are 14 years old. Grow up you dumb shits.

Start the homophobic flames here....immature fucks.

Skiing doesn't exist because a few people are willing to take chances. Skiing exists because people find it enjoyable to go down mountains on skis. TJ and Dexter didn't go to Aspen to be CREATIVE, they went there to shred some gnarly slopes and scope on some ski bunnies. The "pioneers of ours" weren't jumping off cliffs to be CREATIVE, they were doing it because it was a rush.

Scot Schmidt (do you know who that is?) and other pioneers of our sport didn't get to be the extreme badasses they are because they sat around thinking of what would be the most individualisic form of expression. They just went out and skied the shit out of everything they saw. It doesn't matter if you wear clothes made for a 500 pound black man and ride 9thward or wear girls jeans and rock surface, you like skiing, so do I! So get off your high horse!

ok, so you don't seam to get it. "just have fun" and "let people do what they want" means to not be bothered by them, only worry about yourself. who cares if they are posers, who cares if they arn't as good of a skier as you, who cares about any of that shit.

and if you find the need to really care about what other people are doing then you should be looking at it like this: they are posers and shit yes, BUT, they are buying all the cool and in stuff, therefor, they are suporting the industry, which is a very good thing. I would rather have 1 million posers buying the new twin tip and jacket combo then having them get their parents to buy used downhill skis, or even worse, new carving skis.

what kevy said...

skiing = fun. i have fun listening to hip hop, wearing clothes that don't fit as "proper" individuals think they should, i have fun partying on and off the mountain, and i have fun just SKIING.

just ski. < new slogan for some ski company....so long as its not line or liberty.

how the hell do you know kids who act gangster dont have fun, i wear big clothes and u cant tell me i dont have fun, i dont think anyone would ski if it wasnt fun. and how r u to say they dont know wat skiing is about,, since u know so much about it fuckin duechse

WTF? You're dogshitting on the most important segment of the industry since 'shaped-skis' gave people a reason to buy new boards.

Snowboarding has had it's own image issues in the past too but you're propin' it's presence today.

STFU , let it evolve and have fun with it.
