Why would you not wear a helmet?

i cant rep jiberish on my hat dooooo!

ive pretty much always worn a helmet, but got completely convinced when i watched my buddy almost die. cracked his dome piece in half, out cold, convulsing and shit. got airlifted out with bleeding in the brain. every doctor we talked to said the helmet saved his life.

that was when i got sold

I really don't understand the 'ill wear one when im doing sketcy stuff' I mean look at CR or Josh Dueck, they weren't doing anything ordinary, and still got hurt really bad.

I wear a helmet, always, and ofcourse its not comfortable, and it might not look as good,

but even if the chance of falling on your head and get something serious isn't that big, but if it happends its bad, its really bad, specially when you are not wearing a helmet, I can promise you that at that moment you wish you would have.

I get hurt alot, serious injuries, and whenever I can prevent one, I will, I wear a lot of protection, and you know why? cause I would like to keep on skiing for as long as possible, and every injury you prevent from just wearing something thats a bit uncomfortable might save you months of recovery.

and to me wearing somethings that's not that cool is deff worth months of skiing.

+ I think everybody is over the fact that helmets aren't cool by now.

I wear a helmate

Thank god. I got cocky and tried a 900 landed at 810 edges down hill and was out for a good 5 min. Got a serious concussion and was off skis for 2 weeks. That was WITH a helmate. I don't even wanna know what would of happened without one

Also wearing a helmate makes everything look "proportionate" baggy jacket and pants (if that's your style) looks stupid with a tiny head. You look like a pin head!

They also keep you warmer than just having a beanie on.

Unless I'm just cruising down so mellow hills, I always wear one.

Pekka Hyysalo is one good example. He hitted very hard to flat doing fake double rodeo. He was in koma like 20 days and got serious brain damage.Doctors said he would never ski again, walk in 2 years and nobody would get a contact to him in first year. But he recovered one year and now he can talk, walk and most important do what he loves, ski! All because of he was using a helmet, you all can think what woul be happen if not. You can read about http://www.pekkahyysalo.com/ on his website!

i think a helmet is an excellent thing to wear. i wear mine every time i go skiing. has it ever actually saved my head? not yet no, but it's reassuring to know that i have that extra layer of protection in-between my head and the ground.

yes, a lot of people won't ever need it, because they land their tricks, they don't do tricks, they ski well, etc. however, if you use it even once, doesn't that alone make it worth it?

i think at the very least, kids and teens should have to. brains aren't developed until age 25 on average, so protecting that shit seems smart to me.

With the vast amount of different helmets out there, the "uncomfortable" reason is bullshit. Try a few, youll find one that fits. After 2 days, you will be use to it

Funny thing is that they are warm, comfortable, give me a fog free place to rest goggles and are stylish. If u were on my HS race team back in 97 and had to deal with those clunkers it'd be a different story. I think my POC is cool as fuck. This argument is akin to skiing without health insurance. It's just a gamble I'm not willing to take 99% of the time. As said earlier, what gets me is that fucktards on here are laying down reasons to not wear helmets in front of a young impressionable crowd. while I'd oppose any legal mandates requiring helmets because I believe in small unobtrusive government, I'm going to do what I can to keep helmet dissenting opinions at bay.

unless ur skiing real simple shit, wear one 99% of the time. i can honestly say i wud be dead or braindamaged if i took some of the falls i have without a helmet

its all personal preference, if you wanna wear one all day long, go for it. walk to school with it on. Other than that, mind your god damn business and let everyone else do what they want.

Nice reading, especially in the end under "Two Persistent Ski Helmet Criticisms.... and Apparent Myths".

I personally wear one (Sweet Trooper HC) cause I'm used to it. It doesn't hurt as much when you hit smaller branches etc. in dense forests. I have never been cold wearing it either, not even in temps down under -20 C. But it's all personal preference, if people don't like wearing helmets, it's fine by me. The important thing is to have a good time!

I agree... I mean a helmet isn't going to save you from a concussion but if you hit something with your head I would rather crack a helmet than my skull... just sayin..

always wear one on the hill. never wear one doing urban. i wanna buy a skateboard helmet for urban, not worth another concussion.

Yeah I've always worn a helmet, and I still do. Last year I ate it hard on a dirt jump and couldn't remember anything, and I was wearing a helmet.. I don't even wanna think about what would have happened if I wasn't.

And exactly! you can't put die cuts on beanies haha

I agree that it does feel quite a bit better to not wear one, just like riding a bike without one feels better. The truth is, skiing is a dangerous sport and it's a good idea to protect yourself. Sure helmets don't protect you from broken necks or broken legs, but at least you wont have to worry as much about brain damage when you wear one. Femurs heal, brain cells don't. I don't, however, agree with the people that go around trying to convince others to wear helmets. Let them make their own decisions, and just worry about yourself. I know I'll be wearing one in the future, but at the same time, its not a big enough deal that I feel the need to tell others how to think. I think we can all agree that it's quite a bit more civilized to let others make their own choices than trying to force them to do something they don't want to do.
sparknotes: Wear a helmet if you want, don't if you don't. Don't try to tell others what to think. Stay happy!
/end thread.

you must not do much skiing on the east coast

once you find a helmet that fits comfortably and look like a g, youll never go back.

i normaly wear one but one day last season i didnt feel like it and took one of the worst falls ive ever taken and didnt have a helmate on and my head only hurt a little. I over shot a jump likes simon dumont did and broke both my thumbs tore my acl and smashed my head on wind blown ice and im only half dumb still

you cant be gangster when youre a fucking vegetable either. i wear a helmet, but thats also because ive had to spend 4 nights in the hospital cause i cracked my skull. head injuries suck, nothing to fuck around with

ive heard people are more prone to injuries with helmets. such as it provides a false sense of security. you are more likely to do something stupid when you have a helmet on.

I've had 6 concussions that were treated, prolly around 10-15 total...2 without helmet.

Those two were so noticeably worse than the rest(while being not the worst falls) that I know my helmet does me good, and I haven't skied without one in at least 5 years...

That being said, until i read this thread I never thought twice about guys that don't wear helmets. Some guys I ski with don't, but we've never talked about it like this..Which brings me to my point...

jesus fuckin christ people. Live your own damn life. It's absurd to think you can ridicule someone because you believe what you do is "right" or "smarter" or "safe"..They believe things too,

and nobody's right.

this is clearly the most sound logic….

bang your head hard enough without a helmet, and that activity won't even be in your range of motion.
