Why would you not wear a helmet?

Here are my thoughts on why not to wear a helmet:

1) Wearing a helmet increases your risk tolerance hence actually increasing your odds of hurting yourself.

2) Ski helmets are only tested up to 13mph

3) they can* limit visibility

4) can* impair hearing

5) studies have shown high incidence on neck injuries due to wearing a helmet

6) you have a 1/10k odds of recieving a TBI while skiing

6.1) clarification: these odds decrease as your ability level increases.

7) The more advanced you are of a skier the lower odds of falling and hitting your head, experts describe this as learning to fall safely.

EVERYONE OF THESE ARGUMENTS COME FROM PEER REVIEWED SOURCES AND IF CLARIFICATION IS NEEDED PM ME

After I wrote a paper on this I don't wear a helmet anymore unless I'm trying a new trick

because I'm not a bitch like you.

I fell once and hit my head on a handrail. The handrail broke, I was fine.

I haven't fallen since.

I shit you not, i wore a helmet while driving in between urban rails today. While singing freebird at the top of my lungs. i realized how stupid i looked after my friends looked at me when i got out of the car.

If you helmets head would stop belittling people that do not wear helmets then we would not be having this thread srsly. I'm fucking tired of people bitching about ppl not wearing helmets, if we don't want to wear them then fucking leave it at that don't try to force it on us.

because you have this...

If you don't wear a helmet, fine. But as soon as someone promotes non-helmet wearing before a bunch of adolescents, I take issue. Capiche?

1. how can you use this as an argument? that completely varies person to person, and you're completely ignoring the protection that helmets provide.

2. they've also been proven to provide substantial brain protection at much higher speeds, reducing the potential of brain injury by between 70 and 85% depending on the study.

3. for the * you should have put at the bottom *if you wear a full face helmet, in which case the impact danger is probably much higher and so the protection becomes paramount. the average helmet suggested absolutely does not limit visibility, especially if you're already wearing goggles (which you are, don't lie to me).

4. as long as you're alert and know what's going on around you, this should not be a problem, and again, substantial amount of protection is provided on the off chance some silent skier bowls you over.

5. i'm sure i could find a study finding just as many neck injuries occurring in crashes without helmets, and a lot more brain injuries.

6/7 under normal skiing circumstances these odds decrease as your skiing level decreases, but for, you know, a freestyle skier, the risks you take are far, far greater. even if you're an amazing skier, when you're throwing inverts, hucking cliffs and ripping through trees, your risk of a tbi dramatically INCREASE, prove me wrong on that.

sorry bro, but this just weak rationalization. when it comes down to it, wearing a helmet is the smartest option. just like all the naysayers for helmets, i don't wear mine all the time because sometimes i don't feel like it, and i have confidence in my ability as a skier, but that doesn't mean its a good idea. helmets protect your head from brain injury in a high speed, high risk sport, that's all you really need to know.

If you are in college and have means to read any of these feel free. I'm not going to waste my time spoon feeding you

i allways wear one because im trying new tricks each day, and especially whilst hitting urbans. Its just natural, and im glad most peopl wear it, and its not like wearing a bike helm while skateboarding ..

This and im just used to wearing a helmet. Playing hockey and football you need to wear one. And when racing I need to wear one. However my helmet probably will provide very little protection for me.

I don't wear one because that is my fucking right. This country was founded on freedom of choice, and if you don't like something that's fine but you damn well better respect it. So all you people telling me what I should and should not do can go eat a fucking dick

hey stupid. no ones telling you to wear one or not, the OP just simply started a discussion.

Because you can die from choking on steak at a nice restaurant, or get hit by an eighteen wheeler, or catch meningitis. There's a ton of shit that's super dangerous in this world, but we still eat steak and drive cars because you simply can't live a fun life if you're constantly worried and trying to cover your ass.

You guys still just don't get it do you? We have the freedom to do whatever we want, however stupid it may be! If you do not like it then keep your bigotry opinions to your self and get on with your life.

People who drive cars die from head trauma with a higher frequence than skiers. Should I wear a helmet when I'm driving my car? It's simple to put one on when I'm driving.

How is number one even a possibility? Considering the amount of people stating the fact that they don't wear helmets is because they feel MORE free without them. That's a direct contradiction of what you just put forth.

Also, any can statement automatically get's removed from the argument as I CAN bring alot of bogus and inaccurate statements forth that involve the word CAN.

Driving drunk CAN get you in an accident and possibly kill you. Banging a prostitute CAN give you an STI. Walking across the street CAN get you in the hospital. "Can" really just means "we needed another thing on our list but it isn't true 80% of the time".

Goggles limit the vis dude, not helmets. You let your eyeballs freeze too? Your neck is going to have an injury whether or not you wear a helmet. They aren't designed to protect your neck, duh. That's like saying you're more likely to burn yourself if you a hat while operating a stove. And the average human being doesn't turn into a retard when they put a helmet on. That last statement almost makes me think this is a troll. Geez. Yap, Mike Douglas forgets how to fall when he has a helmet on.

All of that to say this. Not wearing a helmet when you're skiing anywhere over an easy black run, that includes BC, urban, park and dub blacks, is dumb. Like smoking because you don't believe it'll cause lung cancer, shortness of breath and other health problems. You can find a cooked up "peer reviewed" paper anywhere. Stop and think for yourself for a minute and common sense will lead you down the path of wisdom.

And YEAH, I like beating dead horses!

no you should not. a car also has many other safety features that help decrease your chances of head trauma. for example, air bags. If your not wearing a helmet skiing, there is nothing to help protect you. it is personal preference, its just hard for me to imagine not wearing one.

shhhhhh, don't tell them. They have the same mindset as the people who made seat belts mandatory.

OP and all the other ignorant assholes

If someone wants to take a greater risk, who not let them. Don't try to force your helmet wearing ways on other people.

I was watching some stept footage, and the shit that those guys are hitting with out helmets is insane. One wrong fall and they would be dead. And to all the people who dont wear one, I understand its preference, but it only takes once...

I don't wear a helmet because I'm fucking 28 and was raised in an era wear NO ONE wore a helmet while skiing. No one.

On the other hand, no one my age grew up wearing helmets riding bikes, or any other time really....not even playing hockey.

So, just because you little 16 year old dipshits grew up in this coddled, law suit laden world where your parents put fucking rubber on anything pointy and read countless books about how to keep you safe and chased you around the house forcing you to put helmets on all the time and now you guys have banded together and convinced yourselves that you're evolved and the cool guy club, doesn't mean it's necessary for you to tell other people how they should live or protect themselves.

How bout this: wear a helmet, feel good about wearing a helmet, and stop worrying about what other people do. None of you are altruistic, and none of you are doing anything noble for the "greater good", instead you're reassuring yourselves and patting each other on the back....well, congratulations, now kindly fuck off and reattach yourselves to daddy and the pink harness you undoubtedly learned to ski with.

can't really compare these two.

one is you just by yourself

the other is riding around in a 4000lb soda can surrounded by other 4-6000 lb soda cans. which are usually going much faster than you would on skis. So add the momentum of a 2 ton car @ 60mph vs just you hitting the snow.

Seatbelt argument =/= Helmet argument

And you, sir, are a mindless drone easily influenced by others. Go add another pro on facebook, and continue to base all of your choices regarding fashion, music, helmet sticker placement, and whatever else on your idol worship of kids who happen to be good at spinny flippies on skis.

i dont wear helmets because of fashion, nor am i a drone, hah.

i wear a helmet, because im progressing, and falling and taking hits to the ground is part of progressing. for me i guess, and i think to strap on a comfortable yet classy helmet protects my head from TBI's and other stuff. Had a friend who broke his neck on a handrail, doctor said a helmet would've saved him,

but i guess your kind of vigilante rebel adults are too cool to not do so.

if i would follow fashion, i probably wouldnt wear one.

Expecting " Touché, "

and yes its preference, and i dont rant on people who dont wear one.

i rant on the moronic wannabe kewl adults who believe other people who want to wear helmets are mindless drones, brainwashed by professional athletes, etc, etc.

he speaks some truth, kids these days are very impressionable and you have to admit a lot of them just copy what their favorite athletes are wearing

No, it's exactly the opposite. Helmets allow stupid risk takers who would normally be culled out of the gene pool to survive and breed.
