Why Wallisch should be going to the Olympics

Its weird because his segment in TGR's Way of Life was talking about how he was training super hard for the Olympics and was a frontrunner to qualify. I didn't see his name in any of the competitions and none really talked about him being in the Olympics.

No doubt Tom deserved the last spot more than any other skier from how much he has done to the sport the last couple of years. This will make watching the Olympics allot less interesting for allot of skiers. Hopefully Tom wont loose much motivation to keep pushing the sport from this! And after hearing this I don't think skiers will care to much about the olympics in the future because when countries like the us can only bring 4 skiers allot of the top riders in the world wont be able to compete, even tho they would have had a very fair chance of getting to the podium/win.

Not sure anyone watched the Grand Prix on Saturday but there were some real confusing points regarding the discretionary pick.

a) The announcers mentioned Tom had to get at least 4th place (which he did) to even be considered for the discretionary pick. If TYW can get a discretionary pick without skiing once (in pipe) then why does Wallisch have to place 4th just to get considered for the discretionary pick?

b) After the event, the announcers interviewed Joss and Schlopy (no Wallisch) and presented them as the two skiers who may be selected based on the discretionary pick. Was Tom already eliminated at this point by the coaches? Why wasn't he included in the convo if he did finish 4th?

Yep this almost 100% true, and makes a lot of sense if that's the case.. People don't need to make such a big deal, yes he's sick as fuck and yes he's probably not healthy enough to compete at 100%..

^ lol comparing Olympics to the xgames. Tom has to be cleared as well as excepted onto the team through the commitee if I'm not mistaking. And if that's the case it's up to them to decide if he's healthy enough or not.. If he feels good enough to compete in the xgames he can, doesn't work like that with the Olympics..

I could be wrong, but I've heard directly trough someone working with north face that this due to his health.

Wallisch? what is he supposed to say wahh they didnt pick me? get the fucking coaches on the horn hold them responsible for their decision, it's not like skogen fucking sprang is some a list celebrity who's unreachable except through his agents.

Yeah I have posted this 3 times and for some reason mods keep deleting it. Wallisch tore his acl in NZ in August.

I found myself wondering the same thing, also if the course is lacking whos to say every trick will be stomped?

switch dub 10 stomp > trip 1980 wash

go tom!

I think this is a clear indication to me as well as anyone else who has been driven to be "good" at skiing and wanted to win comps. I've always been about that and always thought competing especially with all my friends was a fun thing to do. I have really nothing against the aspect of competition. But, after seeing this and after many years of watching bullshit calls on who gets 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, its clear that skiing should really just stop with the competitions. On a serious note, put together a dope video and put it on the internet for FREE. Tom has been at the top of his own personal game for so long and should be recognized for his dedication to becoming one of the best. You can't avoid giving him credit for something he is equally passionate about. This must be a serious let down to him to see all of his accolades add up to nothing. There isn't enough money to make it in the industry unless you're one of the gifted few.

Ski for fun, keep it simple.

Film what you do, put it out for free (unless you're Tom)

Keep this community from falling underneath the basic corportate and money driven markets.

They're deleting because it was somewhat on the down low, although at this point I guess it doesn't really matter. At any rate, the whole situation blows and it's too bad he didn't just do what Torin did instead of trying to compete/qualify like everyone else. He would have gotten the discretionary spot for sure. I am excited for Joss though and I hope he does well, and I hope Tom wins X Games in the meantime.

I agree with Steve, but lets not put Joss down. He has totally earned his spot and hes fucking slayed recently. If it where up to me i would bring Wallisch, Joss, and Geopper at least, and fuck im Canadian eh

I agree Joss had a very amazing competiton on the last qualifier at Park City. Congratulations to Joss for coming thru in the clutch. BUT prior to the Park City GP's, Tom beat both Joss (DNS at BreckGP for injury) and Schlopy in the first 3 contests. Doesn't that count for anything? That's whats so frustrating.

So Tom didn't podium in any of the qualifiers. How many podiums did Torin get in the qaulifiers, oh nevermind.

Yeah but once Simon blew his knee, Torin was really the only viable option. You had Gus for pipe too, but it's not in the best interest of the US team to have Gus focusing on two events.

If it wasn't Tom I would have gone with Schlopy.

Pretty funny that the current World Champion and the USA National Champion both won't be at the olympics. What a crock.

I hope so badly that Tom takes gold at X now.

But if he doesn't take gold, I really hope Joss does. Time to prove something.

Off topic by a long shot, but Wally should host a new event, just like JOSS but in north america. multilday short edit kind of thing. That was the best contest skiing has ever seen.

even if it has been the same run everyone else is copying it because its the best variation to impress judges. Everyone theat copies it didnt have nearly as much style as Tom. The pretzel man, the face of freeskiing, the illest skier Tom deserves to go!!!!!! TOM!!!!

Whilst I think Tom should be going to the Olympics, if Tom doesn't get good results at the X Games, and has underwhelming results for the rest of the season, does it vindicate the coaches for not picking him?

When the 'Black Widow' terrorist group blows up the Olympics, at least Wallisch will be safe. Silver lining guys.

What? His leg's not broken, he can still ski if he chooses to. I didn't say he couldn't, just that if he hadn't competed he (probably) would have gotten the discretionary pick.

So, Sarah Hendrickson tore her anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and meniscus in August; and she's still competing.

Anyone else paying attention to the "playing sans ACL" comments floating around on here and Twitter?

There's some merit to Tom's injury rumors. Has been for months now. Important to note there are many athletes who aren't too keen on sharing that kind of information in this sport (and w/ good reason). It greatly affects their livelihood. Just the mere perception of an injury often limits sponsor support - and perhaps in this case keeps athletes out of the Olympics. I truly hope that isn't the case. Barring someone from the Olympic team because of injury (so long as they're still a serious medal contender) is wrong and abuse of the coach's position.

Professional athletes in many sports push injuries like these aside in championship games and other important events. That's part of what they get paid to do - decide which injuries are worth healing and what isn't. In the end, the athlete has to know when the timing is right and when it isn't.

Sounds to me like Tom decided to push forward w/ his injury. It's a brave thing to do. It didn't pay out. Olympics or not, I have a sneaking suspicion he'll still finish out this season w/ the injury - hitting podiums and selling his sponsors all the way.

Also, I don't think this is Tom's only window. Seven or eight years ago, I'd have conceded. Now we're seeing athletes pushing through their mid-30s and still competitive - albeit not slopestyle (yet). Give it time. We are seeing Tom in the early years of his prime.

Still curious to hear what the coaches/staff have to say.

Ok. So is this whole thing set in stone?! Who can we contact or Where can we go to bitch about this and let the comitee as well as the coaches know that they fucked up? Its highly unprobable... but we I say we do whatever we can to try to change the decison, change the team, and get tom to sochi.

Does anybody have any idea when the whole story is going to come out? I know I'm not the only one dying to hear what happened and caused this.

There has to be some statement released by Skogan right?

Someone on here has to know him, and must've mentioned that a large portion of the skiing community doesn't respect the decision and that he should respond at some point with the rationale for it.

This is definately very dissapoitning not seeing wallisch in the US lineup. I remember watching him on the news a few years ago and when they mentioned the new olympic events he got so excited, so when i heard he wasnt picked for the team i was so spewin and suprised. He is one of the true pioneers of the sport and always will be even if his name isnt marked down for the olympics. But i do give credit to the way Joss has been skiing lately, and more kids like him are gonna come around aswell in the next few years for 2018, and i will put money on not seeing gus and bobby there than.

I think its just the shitty timing with everything that made this decision so dramatic. But i do agree when you say he should be in the team because he is still a great skiier even if he fucked up in a few events

Big props to Black steve for making this point. People should take note to how he made his point but was still super respectful about it. He also backed his point up with facts instead of just saying that he was pissed that Wallisch didn't make the olympics.

I don't think it's insulting at all. If I were in his position I wouldn't want to get involved in this thread either. I'm sure he's disappointed and wants to focus on positive things rather than hosting an AMA about how upset he is. Tom doesn't belong to us.

Oh get over yourself. He's at X-games, replying to this thread is meaningless. What is he going to say to make you guys feel better?

Just his view on the matter, hes the subject of this thread, so to hear his opinion on the matter would be nice.

Did making your post make you feel better?

There has to be a part of this story we are missing, an injury, or perhaps Tom pissed off the illuminati. It makes no sense whatsoever that he wasn't picked; he is without a doubt the best, most consistent, most stylish slope skier in the sport today.

There is no way he just got "overlooked," especially after being paraded around on television as he face of US free skiing. Something has to be going on behind the scenes.
