Every time I turn on the TV I see all this shit about helping victims of the tsunami 'crisis.' Fundraisers, telethons, government support, and celebrities either out of the goodness of their heart of for PR are donating large sums of cash. Why should we give our money to these victims. It's not like we asked for them to be hit by a giant wave. I know they didn't ask for it either, but these same people didn't ask to be dying of hunger, disease and poverty before they were hit by a wave and we didn't hit them then. Why should we help them now.

My point isn't that we shouldn't help them, it's that there's an AIDS crisis in Africa, and a poverty crisis all over the world. This has been for decades, and yet we've never had this kind of determination to help the less fortunate before. Why is this any different? Why couldn't Micheal Schumaker donate $10 Million to diseased, uneducated, hungry orphans in Indonesia a month ago? Why do we all care now?

davidh you have completly missed his point. He is saying why does it take a huge thing like this to get people to donate money. More people are dying from AIDS in Africa by far then ahve died in this event. People are continueing to die becuase men believe that by having sex with a virgin will cure them of AIDS, which we know it won't so the virus keeps spreading.

People donate to this becuase it happened all at once and it was a trajedy all at once. AIDS doesn't make the news as much becuase 165,000 people wiht AIDS arn't dropping dead at one moment. It's more like millions are dropping dead over the years and that just doesn't make the news as much becuase it isn't happening at one time and therefor not having as large of an effect

The problem with people taking action agianst the pandemic in Africa is that, while it's clear how we should deal with SE Asia (give people food, shelter, rebuild homes, etc.), It's nearly impossible to figure out what we should do about it... there have been ceaseless efforts to stem the tide of AIDS in Africa, to no avail whatsoever. In the words of Peter Piot, Director of UNAIDS, the pandemic is “The single greatest threat to continual global development�, an assertion which is given greater weight when one considers that in many countries, a large percentage of the people (doctors and nurses) treating the disease in third world nations have contracted it themselves, and so medical staff for treatment is constantly at risk and constantly shrinking. One might expect the trend in developing countries towards the virus’ impact being limited to a very small minority of the population, along with advances in medical science, to have slowed the progress of the pandemic at least to some extent, but this is not the case; while 17 million people have died of AIDS since 1980, 5 million contracted the disease in 2001 alone, a rate of 11 infections per minute. While it is likely that a global effort is the best (and possibly the only) way to stop the spread of the virus, that global effort has, thus far, fallen far short of achieving its desired ends. So this is why we're focussing on Asia... it's a problem that can be immediately addressed. You're right, Africa is by far the greater problem, but it's also one with greater obstacles to deal with if we want to make any headway in ameliorating the situation.

So since there are greater obstacles it's easier to just ignore it? If a business has a product that has a greater return but greater obtsicals to overcome to market the product they'll pump more money into marketing. It's not even money anymore they just need to be educated

The epidemic rages on.

The news is sobering. In fact it is down right frightening. A new report from the United Nations says that AIDS will kill half of all 15 year olds in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa if something is not done soon. The report goes on to say that about 24 million people in Sub-Sahara Africa are living with HIV. So why is the epidemic raging out of control in Africa and other undeveloped countries? Several factors are contributing to this tragedy.

No Money

The problem is so basic...there is not enough money to fight the disease. Prevention efforts in the western world centers around education, condom use and testing and counseling. And statistics show that while HIV transmission has not been eradicated, these measures have helped dramatically. Unfortunately, for those living in Sub-Sahara Africa, the availability of these important prevention techniques are rare. Without HIV education, Africans continue to be in the dark about how they can change behaviors to halt the spread of the disease.

Without condoms, heterosexual transmission continues to soar. Consider this. In some African nations, 1 in 3 adults are infected with HIV. Unprotected sexual contact is common, making transmission more likely and more widespread.

And finally, widespread testing and counseling is just not available. Of the 24 million or so with HIV, a large number of them do not know they are infected. Because of this, heterosexual contact becomes a major transmission route of young adults in Africa. The combination of not knowing their HIV status and the lack of available condoms, allows unprotected sexual transmission to continue.

To combat this lack of funds, the United Nations is urging developed countries to fund the war on HIV. Experts place the cost of containing the epidemic to be approximately $4 billion.

No Meds

In the western world, the fight against HIV has been bolstered by the emergence of HIV medications. Unfortunately, the lack of available health care dollars in the countries hardest hit has made medications scarce in those regions. Medications have be proven to arrest the progress of HIV infection to AIDS, thus allowing people to live longer, more productive lives. Without the benefit of these drugs, Sub-Saharans continue to fall victim to AIDS at alarming rates.

Cultural Differences

A big barrier to containing the HIV virus is cultural differences that make fighting the disease all that much more difficult. In some African populations, multiple sexual partners is expected as part of cultural expression. This increases the risk of transmission because of the shear number of sexual contacts, most of them between parties who are unaware they are infected.

Complacency

In Africa alone, more than 11 million people have died as a result of AIDS. Yet, South African President Thabo Mbeki denounces HIV as the cause of AIDS, saying that nothing has been proven that links the two. Instead, Mbeki is representative of a growing number of people that feel HIV drugs themselves may be the cause of AIDS. This stance has made it more difficult to educate the general population on the importance of medicines in fighting HIV and AIDS.

Oddly enough, the success of HIV medications is also contributing in a small part to the African epidemic. Complacency has led to a rise in unprotected sex, both heterosexual and among gay men. People have seen the success of medications and feel that if infected, a few pills is not a large price to pay for spontaneity. This state of mind can and will have huge ramifications.

So the epidemic rages on. Some experts expect two thirds of the Sub-Sahara population will eventually be wiped out by AIDS. A sobering thought indeed. While there have been a few successes in the region, AIDS continues it's devastating attack on a population, a culture, a people. Changes have to be made soon...while there is still time.

i'm kind of in the middle of something, so i'm not sure if somebody else has already said this, but i think you've completely missed something rebel.

the difference between this and the aids crisis, or existing political rifts, is that the tsunami has arrived without warning, without time to react. we as human beings are far more likely to sympathize when a threat or devestating act occurs without warning.

we're used to aids, we're used to displaced people, malnurishment, hunger, disease and collapsing infrastructure. but we'll never get used to natural disatsters - especially when this one has recieved the title of UNPRECEDENTED because of the extent of its damage.

yes conflicts are consistently forming in politcal hotbeds like africa, but lets face it most western nations could give a flying fuck (since not even our tourists are interested) because we've been seeing it for years and we've been completely desensitized...the west views africa as a lost cause, people never capable of forging a respectable nation in the first place.

and thats what i'm trying to say, we never care about things that we knew already existed, things we had time to get used to. time to look at those 'issues' as things of concern to already expendable people - as if it were the job of a certain portion of our people to be suffering and dying.

I think you have a few good points but let me voice my oppinion

I think one of the reasons we are helping these Tsunami victims is because after over

150 000 dead, people all around the world will have some sort of connection with the victims or be affected by the events of the tsunami. And if you are affected by any thing of this nature, whether it be an illness, a natural disaster or even drinking and driving, you are much more likely to help support the cause in whatever way possible.

I have to disagree about the aids thing being less important to some. I admit, a wider variety of people are donating money to the tsunami victims then people who are donating to aids research and helping aids victims, but, AIDS is a something ongoing, and still something people have raised a lot of money for. I think if you looked at the amount of money raised for AIDS victims it would surprise you. I don’t think that was the point of your opinion but it was something I felt should be said because a lot of money has been donated to support this cause.

What I would like to see is some of our countries tax dollars go towards these countries instead of areas that aren't as important. I am sure if you looked at some of the governments spending, you would find a wealth of our tax dollars spent on things that aren't neccessities and that serve no benefit to canadian citizens.

We all have to admit, these materialistic things we have, mean so much more to us, then the needs of others less fortunate. It is a bit sickening when you think about our lifestlye, and that of others. It's something that will always be here i think, nobody would ever fork over the cash they might spend on a pair of skis, a seasons pass, an article of clothing or a video game

I think there is a lot that Africa can do to help itself. Namely, they could all stop fucking like rabbits. I mean, seriously. After 75% of your friends got sick because they banged some sickly looking chicks, wouldnt you figure it out? I just cant feel as bad for these people that are contracting aids at a rate of 11 per minute because my bet is that they all know at least a little about it, yet they cant keep it in their pants long enough to not get the disease. Why should we continue to waste our money on this seemingly lost cause when we can make some progress in another part of the world? There are thousands upon thousands of people in Africa trying to educate the public on the risks of AIDS. I dont understand why these people keep doing it even though they are more likely than not to get a disease. Fuck.

i thought that people were going to africa to teach them not to have sex so damn much and to use protection and shit like that. i also heard that they wont listen to americans and people educating them because they dont like us/believe were wrong. if they did stop fucking or used protection, AIDS would maybe start to die down, but because they wont listen, or dont even have the access to this knowledge, AIDS keeps spreading.

You donate because they would do the same and they have much less money than us. When the volcano off the coast of argentina blows and the eastern seaboard of the UNITED STATES is dead we will be asking for donations and doctors too. They were self sustaining no matter how many kids they had but when there hospitals are full of mud up to the cieling than they need supplies, which costs money.

Giving your time or energy is much much more valuable but some of us can't spare that so we give money. Those that don't and make comments about birth control and shit have no idea what life even is. They think turning on the tv and getting on the internet and school is life. These people believe in more than that and do much more with much less than any of us do. If you don't donate, fine no one here cares but telling them that this happened because they didn't use birth control is just dumb. Most of the members on here are dumb including me but shit these comments are out of control, you are buying yourself a ticket to hell. When you get hit by a bus tomorrow that you don't hear because your listening to your ipod you will then realize what life is.

I prolly should have thought that post out a bit more before I posted it. I do feel for the people who have aids. I still cant believe how many people are still getting the disease after so many people are dying all around them though. Here is what I meant:

Now obviously my previous post was a bit crude, but I stand by my point. It doesnt take an education to not have sex with someone with aids. In my opinion, it takes some common sense. You can't flame me for having a perfectly reasonable opinion. This is also a case by case kind of thing. You can never blame someone for getting aids if they were raped or was a prositute to earn money for basic needs. However, these guys who will ahve sex with anything that moves have less of an excuse.

You are entitled to having whatever opinion that you want, but I think somebody put it best a little higher in the thread. If your parents got hit by a drunk driver, you would want somebody to take care of you for a little while. Africa is more of an alcoholic dying a slow death.
