Why Killington has no excuse to close on May 6

it's all about that date of the year they have mostly locals on the hill. which pretty much means mostly season passes. which means they aren't making money. So that date always beats out the snow.

i know there's many other factors but when it comes down to it, snow is what makes skiing possible and it just seems funny that they've been open a month longer with less than half the amount of snow they've gotten since march

the thing is, there are already to many of there employees going home. They have a bunch of foreign people that work for them that live on killington housing. Most of the lodges have closed to. Its kind of just the end, maybe they'll learn from it and next year plan differently?

once you get that initial wave of people leaving the country in the spring, locals are your big employment pool. if they can't get people to run the mountain, there isn't a point in keeping it open. and yes, powder will change a few things as far as the books are concerned, or at least that's what happens everywhere when a new owner takes over. but I see long seasons as long as the years don't start out as shitty as they did this season. planning on staying open thru may when there is no snow in january february just isn't going to work.... but to conclude, it's not that they don't want to close down to be asses, it's just logistics and employment. at the end of the season (last month or so) we are always 10-20+ short in the lift department. people just start going home or to their summer desire.

stfu. ive had it with you people and your "o no, my mountain is closing at the end of april!" all the mountains near me closed a month ago. you should be grateful.

Its the forest service bro thats why those places close so early. And also its the insane cost of runing the area with vertually no one skiing.

I remember a time when killy used to close in the first week of june

back in the good old days.....

yeah look at how much longer the hill used to be open on that chart. The last three have been the three shortest ever.

i understand the whole loosing money aspect of it but it seems like over the last 3-5 years ski areas have been shutting down earlier than they did in the past. i always remember skiing on memorial day, i guess that is something that wont ever happend again on the east coast.....

people that actually spend money at resorts, ie: no one on ns, arent skiing anymore, they are playing golf, because they havent seen snow in months. the ammount of money it costs killy to run is rediculous with employees and energy costs, and 5,000 seasons pass holders going a day doesnt help them make money one bit. the hotels arent full, they arent booking lessons, and they didnt do it enough in the money part of the season to keep the resort going as late this year. we could get 4 more feet and they would still prolly close.

i don't care if everything closes except superstar, that's what they usually do for may anyways. i'm sure they can find employees to run one chair and part of the k1 lodge, maybe just on weekends. sorry i'm just so desperate and frustrated

yeah man i completly agree with you. just so you know though running a lift is like 5-10k per day.

but yeah i hate it that they close to. i used to alwas go on a ski trip down there with my dad on may long weekend but i havent been able to do that the past 2 years.

its not that they cant find employess, its that they prolly pay every single employee working at least 8$ an hour, multiply that by 10 hours a day, probably 200 employees, your looking a payroll of $32,000 a day, how many days like that can you sustain when youre hardly selling any day passes, lessons or hotel rooms?

heres what you do, express interest in real estate at jay peak, they will give you a free night in the hotel, go up and stay for free and ski there, they will be open at least 3 more weeks and their passes are cheap

so according to past trends with 294inches they should be open til at least june 1st.....this is gaaay !

regardless of what we say, Killingon is going to close, may 6, thats about 12 days left to ski, so i am going to try to get out hopefully 5 more times and enjoy whats left of the season.

Why. Because running lifts, electricity, diesel, and labor cost outweigh the money coming in. The resorts already have the pass holders money, so for them to stay open longer has become less of importance. Sucks to be a snow lover.

Powder corp does that to your mtn. bachelor used to run well into june, and even july on a couple yrs, new owner takes over, we close in may. however they do try to keep things pretty local..

IT HAS A LITTLE TO DO WITH STAFF LEAVING

A LITTLE TO DO WITH THEM BEING SOLD

AND MOSTLY REGARDING BLACK BEARS COMING OUT OF HIBERNATION

A police man a stratton told me they had to close because the forest department made them because black bears were coming down the mountain and humans cant be using their territory

Everybody gives reasons for them not to be open, but I dont understand why it would change so much in 4 or how many years since they last were open until june. They have tons of snow, and if they could stay open before, they could stay open now(not in a sense for how much snow they had, in a finantial sense).

i heard that most of the people that worked at killington got layed off within the last week, and that was set awhile ago before any april snowmadness had fallen. why would the new management want to accept passes that were credited to ASC, if all it is doing is costing them money

sucks tho, there is still alot of snow in and around the top of k1
