Clearly you will
not be one of those "legends" that come out on top of this sport..
Some good points are
made here for sure, but mostly just ignorant foolishness.
Have you ever
heard the term, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you?”
You have no idea
where the money is coming from and how this sport operates and stays alive. Instead
of bitching about it, maybe offer a solution, create a campaign or a thread
that offers ideas to help build an alliance to support the sport, not break it
down.
Before you hate
on the largest athletic media platform this sport has ever seen, let’s give it
a chance. Build the sport up and create hype and drama for the games, not a
negative vibe before they even start.
First of all, the
athletes that are going to the Olympics “are begging for money” because going to
Russia isn’t cheap and many of the countries have no funding. (Funny how some
countries that are struggling to feed their own people and offer medical care
to the elderly can’t come up with enough money to send an athlete to Russia to
ski off jumps.. Weird!)
As you say the
ski industry was at its peak back in the 70's and 80's, actually it was the
90's if you look at number of skier visits and quantity of skis sold worldwide.
To that same point, do you think Shane was making money when he was “becoming a
legend?”
Do you think Seth
Morrison made a dime until he became the Seth Morrison we all know? No, he worked his ass off until he broke out
and fucking did something? He worked his ass off in order to go ski. That’s it.
Shane did the same. Schmidt, did the same. Shane delivered pizza and cleaned construction sights. Most skiers wait tables, work construction all summer, work landscaping, and pick up shit to be able to ski and you are bitching that some kid that can do a trick the same as ten other people should be paid? Guess what, noone cares about your 1080 or even 1440. You should do it for you, because if you get hurt no amount of money will change that. You should ski for you and the proper "payment" and opportunity will present themselves. If you ski to be seen and bitch about not getting paid over the web, it just shows the ocntent of your character.
Also, you talk
about film companies needing more money… Do you think the Jones brother and the
guys at TGR made money doing what they are doing for the first like ten years?
No, they chose a lifestyle that allowed them to pursue their passions. They got
involved and they hit it at the right time and worked their asses off. That is
life, its half chance.
Maybe the
Olympics will not change the future of skiing, because there are more issues
facing skiing that I am sure you are not aware of. The culture of
skiing needs to support itself internally, and support all aspects of skiing. Guess what every kid that wins one competition will not get paid or get sponsored. Anyone who thinks they should be paid to ski is the issue. You think you should be paid to
go film a segment? Its supposed to be fun.
Why do you think
you deserve free ski gear? Because you think you are the best skier at your
home resort and you have the loudest mouth on New Schoolers? What have you done
to help Moment sell more skis? What have you done to help Marker sell more
binding? What have you done to help Spy, Joystick, Kombi, Capix and Full Tilt? Go ski? You think you make the industry more
money by going skiing with your girlfriend and making a GoPro edit?
And you wonder
why the industry doesn't have cash on hand to pay for film segments?
Don’t be a part of the problem, be a part
of the solution. Support your friends
and “team mates” that are dedicating their lives to represent the sport and
their sponsors in an effort to push and promote the sport. Maybe it will create
some more interest in the sport globally, maybe not, but that is more then you
are doing.
PS. In 2010
Bobby Brown won the X-Games Big Air, and I felt more emotion thinking about that moment just now, than I did when I
just watched your latest edits.
Fucking listen to it. Then think about it:
