Why I've become a Hater

then why don't you spell out the point or at least give a concise description about why your holding such a hostile attitude towards this. I'm always down to have a conversation with someone about todays problems, I'm just confused what your trying to do. If it's really bothering you I'm sure you could build up a group of people and try to change it but your just writing on a thread creating awareness, awareness means nothing without action

i wanna bet a majority of people on newschoolers didnt even think about what they olympics might do to the non competition/free skiing side of the sport. they probably just thought it be cool to watch big stars throw down in the pipe. which it will be but with what consequences?

I never went along with this "the olympics will help us a lot" thing. But I never really spoke up too much either even though I'm someone people expect to hear complaints from. To me it was two things: first it felt kinda pointless to fight the powers that got us into this shithole because they have lobbies, suits and lots of things I don't, second i run a small production company which apparently makes me a selfish bitch for whining about this other part of our culture getting the dollars.

Thanks Logan for spewing some honest opinion here, it inspired me to do the same. I'll start telling kids about what me and my friends are and always have been about. Someone mentioned that our consuming habits do a lot to shape where money goes and of course it does. Lets rep the shit out of companies that push money back into dope shit. To me Line is the perfect example, they use their marketing funds the way I wish every company would.

Also we should be more verbal to our shop owners and company reps about what we want to see and buy. Buy the movies we want to see, write tweets and instagram about it, spread it and help push the guys we like watching to other people. We should tell old-media about whats going on in our sport filming wise so people outside this small circle can find these rad videos etc. We should keep skiing the way we want too, because if we don't aspire to do tripples, slide rails just to do 810s out or in and wear whack shit while doing it the industry will have to make different things, that we actually want.

i always thought the Olympics would only help our industry but reading this really changed my views on that. I also have not read this much in over 2 years, im highly surprised i have passed my english classes the last 2 years..

Who gives a fuck what happens to the competition/free skiing side of the sport. I mean no offence guys, but if all the pro skiers died tonight I'd still go skiing. There will be no consequences for 99% of the people who ski you can still go out side and ski it's not hard.

Yeah, pretty much. There's a hell of a lot of whining in this thread.

I don't really get the mogul discussion a few pages back. People were making comparisons to mogul comps saying that inclusion in the Olympics killed moguls and ruined its credibility. So what? How about you just let slopestyle take its Olympic boom and let it die out? Then carry on with whatever you actually like doing.

This Logan guy is a film skier, right? Sounds like he just needs to suck it up and realise that his niche won't be where the money is for a few years. Once the comp thing dies out, the shift will go back to filming. In the meantime he should just go and ski, and maybe try to enjoy it.

I don't skate, but I'm pretty sure legitimate skaters don't bitch about big-stage vert comps being the most visible to the masses, do they?

No but that's because the most visible to the masses parts of skating are probably street league, dew tour and x games. Vert skaters (with the exception of Tony Hawk for obvious reasons) are far from the best paid skateboarders.

Additionally there are several large skate brands which pay their riders equally regardless of competition results. There are also next to no competition only skaters, they all skate street. Furthermore there are pure street skaters who make comparable money to people who would be considered 'comp skaters' (despite also skating street).

Skiing has a way more unequal allocation of money than skateboarding.

Clearly you will

not be one of those "legends" that come out on top of this sport..

Some good points are

made here for sure, but mostly just ignorant foolishness.

Have you ever

heard the term, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you?”

You have no idea

where the money is coming from and how this sport operates and stays alive. Instead

of bitching about it, maybe offer a solution, create a campaign or a thread

that offers ideas to help build an alliance to support the sport, not break it

down.

Before you hate

on the largest athletic media platform this sport has ever seen, let’s give it

a chance. Build the sport up and create hype and drama for the games, not a

negative vibe before they even start.

First of all, the

athletes that are going to the Olympics “are begging for money” because going to

Russia isn’t cheap and many of the countries have no funding. (Funny how some

countries that are struggling to feed their own people and offer medical care

to the elderly can’t come up with enough money to send an athlete to Russia to

ski off jumps.. Weird!)

As you say the

ski industry was at its peak back in the 70's and 80's, actually it was the

90's if you look at number of skier visits and quantity of skis sold worldwide.

To that same point, do you think Shane was making money when he was “becoming a

legend?”

Do you think Seth

Morrison made a dime until he became the Seth Morrison we all know? No, he worked his ass off until he broke out

and fucking did something? He worked his ass off in order to go ski. That’s it.

Shane did the same. Schmidt, did the same. Shane delivered pizza and cleaned construction sights. Most skiers wait tables, work construction all summer, work landscaping, and pick up shit to be able to ski and you are bitching that some kid that can do a trick the same as ten other people should be paid? Guess what, noone cares about your 1080 or even 1440. You should do it for you, because if you get hurt no amount of money will change that. You should ski for you and the proper "payment" and opportunity will present themselves. If you ski to be seen and bitch about not getting paid over the web, it just shows the ocntent of your character.

Also, you talk

about film companies needing more money… Do you think the Jones brother and the

guys at TGR made money doing what they are doing for the first like ten years?

No, they chose a lifestyle that allowed them to pursue their passions. They got

involved and they hit it at the right time and worked their asses off. That is

life, its half chance.

Maybe the

Olympics will not change the future of skiing, because there are more issues

facing skiing that I am sure you are not aware of. The culture of

skiing needs to support itself internally, and support all aspects of skiing. Guess what every kid that wins one competition will not get paid or get sponsored. Anyone who thinks they should be paid to ski is the issue. You think you should be paid to

go film a segment? Its supposed to be fun.

Why do you think

you deserve free ski gear? Because you think you are the best skier at your

home resort and you have the loudest mouth on New Schoolers? What have you done

to help Moment sell more skis? What have you done to help Marker sell more

binding? What have you done to help Spy, Joystick, Kombi, Capix and Full Tilt? Go ski? You think you make the industry more

money by going skiing with your girlfriend and making a GoPro edit?

And you wonder

why the industry doesn't have cash on hand to pay for film segments?

Don’t be a part of the problem, be a part

of the solution. Support your friends

and “team mates” that are dedicating their lives to represent the sport and

their sponsors in an effort to push and promote the sport. Maybe it will create

some more interest in the sport globally, maybe not, but that is more then you

are doing.

PS. In 2010

Bobby Brown won the X-Games Big Air, and I felt more emotion thinking about that moment just now, than I did when I

just watched your latest edits.

Fucking listen to it. Then think about it:

Clueless. This thread is ripping on the coolest sport for trying to get better. Money is tight, even in the banking industry. (Irony...)

Just help, as the last guy said. Stop bitching. We are so lucky to be able to ski. What is the issue anyway?

Haha, dude, when did this thread become about me? In the OP (and another post a few pages back) I made it clear that skiing has never been about money for me, because I have a real job, and I'm just fine with that. You're more than correct, I won't be one of those legends, but there's dudes that have the potential to that deserve more than what their getting. Also, thanks for watching my edits! I will get exactly zero dollars from my sponsors for those views, because I made them for fun to document a day of my life.

Your incoherent rambling of "you are bitching that some kid can do a trick the same as ten other people should be paid?" is EXACTLY the OPPOSITE of the point I'm trying to make. Karl made the suggestion a few pages back that if companies see the Olympics as a success, money may get diluted to lower level comp skiers that do just that, the same exact tricks. I understand English is a second language for you, but seriously, go back and read the whole thread and give it your best go at comprehending what has been said, because you're clearly missing the point.

What's wrong with wanting something better for the future film skiers of our sport? Honestly, I'm getting old and who knows how many seasons of flat landings my knees have left in them, so all of my bitching and moaning isn't going to benefit me. My problem is that I just fucking love ski movies. Every year I buy every single ski movie I can get my hands on, and I fall asleep watching them every night. It fucking kills me that budgets are getting slashed and money pushed towards the Olympics when, as I've stated multiple times, I think that from a marketing standpoint if sponsors reallocated funds towards promoting films and throwing huge spectacular premiers we could draw more money in as an industry. For fuck's sake, that's what Field is doing right now in Norway and their fucking killing it! Of course Shane cleaned construction sites, Cody Townsend waited tables, and Andy Parry worked as a pizza delivery boy, but what's wrong with pushing for a world where the film skiers can actually make a decent living off of it?

Maybe I will come up with a crack at the solution, maybe I wont, but I used this internet community to start a discussion about it. If you can't at least appreciate the fact that we're talking about it, well, then you can just fuck right off.

So Logan, I think I sent you a soundbite about this already, but we have our site up with an email alert.

Basically what I'm working on with Roner, Todd Jones, Julian Carr, Powder, and a bunch of others is a forum where we can really drive a conversation about how sponsorship dollars are spent when it comes to digital.

What I've found working with athletes and sponsors is that there isn't enough communication and coordination. Sponsors expect athletes to put themselves out there and do what they can, but might not provide enough direction. Athletes want $$$ to do amazing things, but might not have the chops to put it into the grander scheme of the marketing budget and how it can influence potential buyers.

Olympic sponsorship is buying eyeballs. That's an easy argument for a marketer to make and NBC has a huge team putting together feel good collateral to make sponsors feel good about dropping a couple million.

The good news, digital marketing is cheap. Buying eyeballs on newschoolers, tgr, etc... is a lot cheaper than buying it on national tv, and way more measurable and targeted. We've got Jones involved to help us figure out how that works with content creators like yourself, but considering that Level 1 is a different business model that TGR has become in recent years, it would be great to hear your perspective.

Building Brands in a Digital World: Content. Engage. Measure.[/b]

Presented by Bill Cutting

BlueBird Social Zone, Booth #278[/i]

Brand building in a digital world starts with individualized content that engages, converts lookers into buyers, and invites customer re-purchase. Whether you're an athlete seeking sponsorship, or a brand seeking athletes, you'll want to understand how to master brand strategy, deploy it into digital channels, and precisely quantify response and ROI using analytics and the latest measurement tools.

That's probably too much spam for someone with so few posts on here, but there you have it.

Brilliant thread and I agree about everything except this. Dude has great fucking hair man and you're obviously just jealous of that incredible volume and styling that he gets from using Paul Mitchell product

HOOD CREW TO THE WORLD!!! Money would be nice but all we really need are spliffs and skis on are feet to be happy.
