Why I've become a Hater

The problem is that there are way to many filming companies and you cant blaim Joss Christensen for going to the olympics just so he can make som money to survive. Cant everyone just let everyone do what the want !!

This just doesn't make any sense though. Skiing and freeskiing for the matter of things will NEVER even come close to having the audience NFL players have. Just for simply reasons that probably half of the nation or more don't even have access to mountains or even snow. The reason they get paid so much is because of the massive audience and the Olympics will make the audience for our sport greater regardless if they are what you consider "good" or not. You can't hate on the Olympics and say at the same time skiers need to be paid more. The Olympics bring exposure = more money in the sport, some will benefit more but everyone sees rewards from it.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but this logic just doesn't make sense to me. Its simply not sustainable / not a fair allocation of the funds.

How I would see it going if everyone was "smart", as you say:

- 40 of the top film athletes and cinematographers stop filming with their prospective production companies to enter the contest

- Their travel budgets most likely shrink, and a few potentially even lose sponsors

- Everyone spends their winter busting their balls to put out the "best" edit (whatever the fuck that means)

- All edits drop at the same time, consumers get to see the dopest shit for free, everyone goes on a spamming spree to get views, and TGR makes bank when their traffic spikes

- One person is crowned the winner, while the rest of the competition is hung out to dry

- Fall swings around, there are no movies, and no way for consumers to give back to the film side of the industry

Not to mention, what happens if you KNOW you aren't going to win? Should you still enter? How would you feel if TNF dropped 100k on Wallisch's entry, knowing they'd simply make it back if he won?

Just my 2 cents! Feel free to pick it apart or simply call me stupid.

As said before, wait until after the Olympics and even into next season over this season as where I am by the time the Olympics are on the season is almost over.

Personally I got into skiing because of my parents, it was great and they loved Warren Miller films, probably my first ski movies. But then for some odd reason they stopped taking me until I was 10 at home watching the x-games on tv thinking it was the coolest shit ever and begging my parents to take me skiing.

It's taken some time since that moment, but I have been putting my money into my own products and more importantly as you say into movies. So that being said it will probably take a while before you see a change for film.

You know Mr Imlach, there are quite a few posts I see from you that irritate me. There are many more that I enjoy. I like that you express your opinion. You have grown to become one of my more favored NS members because you stimulate intellectual conversations and give good input. Not saying I agree or disagree with your op, because I still do not have an opinion for or against the Olympics. Keep on keeping on my man.

And I agree with the 13 year old comment you said on the first page, there are many mature / older members on here.

Why not set it up as say a high school football tourney. You have 3 sectionals, regionals, semi state, state. Or a tourney like NCAA basketball and have someone other than TGR profit it. This could potentially last the whole season crowning a winner at the end and those who get knocked off can continue filming outside of the completion. It would be head to head battles against which video/athlete/team is the best and they move on to the next round. They're still producing kick ass segments and if espn rather than TGR sponsored to get it going think about all that money we could tap into because it would be broadcast to a larger audience. The reason all other sports are so profitable is because they have measurable competition, a winner per say, set skiing up the same in some fashion maybe not my ideas and then it becomes more profitable. That takes the non comp skiers who make sick fucking videos and then makes them competitors and more marketable while not changing them and turning them in to comp skiers. There would be much more freedom in a system like that, all the urban/bc Booters whatever the skiers wanted in the videos and far less controlled than xgames and olympics

I mean, I get it and all...

Even henrik said in that candid moment with Thall that he wanted to win slopestyle without throwing a triple.

But don't you think this thread is a little premature? I don't think we can really judge what the Olympics will or will not do for our community until l some time after they have occurred.

While I do see what you are saying, you are looking at it from the wrong angle. Start with the question of, "is making a ski movie logical? why/why not?"

This gets at the heart of something that a few really smart, talented people have been talking a lot about.

Companies are so hyperfocused on traditional media and haven't evolved to take advantage of the information age we live in.

There are a lot of people doing more for the core audience than the Olympics ever could, but traditional marketing doesn't know how to effectively leverage it.

It's easier for them to put a $ figure on the number of viewers than it is for them to do an effective social media analysis. That's actually a myth though. Something that we're hoping to disprove.

Stay tuned. We're going to drop Wasome at SIA and hold a conference all about it in May 2014.

dear lord. a quick twitter stalk just told me she's also sponsored by target and covergirl?

that's outta control.. she must be making a lot of dough...

this is an interesting and kind of sickening. however, hopefully the large amount of sponsorship opportunities and cash available to female pros can help encourage other girls to enter the sport and start pushing harder? we all know how pathetic the world of women's freeskiing is. I don't think its fair that a pretty meh skier like Roz is getting more money than someone like Karl or the Stept guys, but ladies, lets capitalize on this opportunity while we still can.

Hey guys. There is no money in the ski industry which is why I donated $25 to Andy Parry's Tell A Friend Tour only a few minutes ago. Why? Because Andy is going to small ski hills to shred with kids that have been watching his edits online for years. Those kids are more likely to want to ski more and grow up to want to work in the industry and support projects like The Tell A Friend Tour.

All that being said, I'm a hypocrite. I can tell you that I'm having success pitching Olympic stories to non-endemic magazines and media outlets. My hope is that it gets me an in and an opportunity to pitch lots of stories, video series ideas, etc, to put the type of skiing I appreciate in front of eyes that have never seen it before. I don't really want to grow the sport. I want to write good stories that entertain people. If they want to go skiing because of it? Well, that's a bonus.

And, yes. Logan for President of the Internet.

Skatingboardings market really isn't that big in the grand scheme of things. Especially compared to freestyle skiing

skateboarding is a lot more appealing to people with little money though. its not like skiing where you need skis, boots, warm clothing and preferably a ticket to a mountain (unless you're just rocking urban, but to get there takes some practice) whereas skateboarding all you need are shoes and a board.

it sort of falls in the same category as soccer, why you see so many 3rd world nations that follow it way more than hockey because all you need is a ball to play.

I think the issue is us. We as people (modern teenagers and young adults) have become so selfish. I think thats the word i want to use. How many people pay for there music these days? Not a lot (well at least from my observations). So in return people don't pay for there movies. I buy all my favorite ski companies films every year because i think its rad to have that film and be able to watch it whenever. Thuss all my friends don't buy a single film or go to a premier because well they can just watch it at my house. I think we all need to show more support to the companies we love. But then most skiers are bore because its so expensive. So i guess were screwed skiing is gay. Snowboarding is cool!!!!

i personally really want freestyle skiing to be more like skateboarding. so I totally agree with you spencer.

the look, the mentality, and the community.

Ok gonna be honest here I'm not really sure why you put the tl;dr at the end of the text because then I read it and THEN see the abbreviation. I mean in this case it doesn't matter because Logan's just a salty ass hole.

ANYWAY truth, truth

Logan, what were you hoping to come out of this rant? The output of the ski industry (whether one likes what it has become or not) is determined by its input and we've all contributed.

I seriously hate you so much you don't even understand all of your opinons/logic is just incredibly off and stupid.

I say screw the Olympics, it's causing too much hate for everyone on here, if it help the ski community then great but I feel it wont even have that much of an effect on the industry. I doubt kids are gunna watch a dub 12 or even a triple be thrown down and then go out and buy a bunch of new shit and get into skiing. it just seems unlikely.

I agree with every word you said, but still, look at what the Olympics is doing for us. When was the last time, beside the X-Games, of course, that real freestyle skiing was shown on national television. I'm pretty stoked that for a couple days I'll be able to watch people stomp runs on NBC, one of the few channels I get. It will draw money, it might take a little to see where it's going, but I wholeheartedly think it will benefit our sport for the better.

The general population would probably look at stept movies as a bunch of hoodlum teenagers smoking pot. When you throw competition into the mix, people automatically assume, "athletic training". America is fascinated by talented athletes. The TV corporations who control what goes on TV knows this, and they came to the conclusion that tv ratings would be higher if they played competitions rather than plain street skiing. I agree that Movies such as level 1 and stept should be advertised on tv, but most of the people who are watching arnt like us, and think of street skiers as lazy thugs, and comp skiers as hard working talent. Its all about the money, whatever gets the higher rating, TV stations will show.

You can't really compare with other sports. Skiing isn't very accessible to the general public=less money into it. Theres skate parks everywhere and the creation of street league is awsome for skateboarding, forget all the bullshit the olympics bring and just focus on exposure it will bring.

Winter olympics are boring as fuck, kids watching are going to be stoked to see motherfukkas hittin rails and grabbing blunts.

Skiing isnt even defined as a sport according to this sport in american society textbook im reading. You can't compare with a sports like the NFL with entirely different dynamics. The direction of Skiing is something none of us can really control or predict, who knows what it will turn into in ten years

What would you like it to turn into logan?
