Why is park skiing so exclusive?

dunno if u americans have this problem, but up here in bc park skiing is just going downhill, theres so many idiots thinking they own the park because they can cork 3, and its frustrating that no one is making friends anymore, because everyone is so obsessed with being with their crew. If Henrik Harlaut and Phil Casabon had been like that, we would not have all those awesome B+E vids, and it feels like this next generation won't produce something like that, simply because half the park skiers are egotistical big fish small pond kinda thing. Next time ur at the park, look for a kid hiking a rail by himself and hang out with him for a couple minutes, i know for a fact that it will make his day, inspire him, and you will get the benefits as well, skiing with people and getting to know them on the chairlift is so good for the soul u guys. have a sick season.

There's good and bad anywhere. Some places are better than others. But if you run into shitty people, remember the cool people.

Like anything in life some people are awesome, some people are douches.

It’s very much “My clique over your clique” in a lot of places even where I ski where it’s 2 different ski hill right next to each other, you’d be suprised at how much kinda rivalry there is. I think you just need to talk make connections atleast try

i feel this. Some kids turn into douchebags when they get a little fame. Skiing should be a community. I find myself skiing with much older dudes since they are down to talk and not just listen to playboy carti on their airpods.

IDK why you think this is a park skiing thing, this is just a problem with the youths and has been since I was a youth, you'll grow out of it by college.

Welcome to skiing. The first thing you should know is that we all say “skiing is about having fun with your friends” but it’s really not. Park skiing is presented as an open welcoming community but this is also not the case. Lots of cliques and almost cultish attitudes.

I'm at breck right now shredding with likes a misfit crew. All of us just randomly linked up because we were skiing alone. Everyone is super dope and super kind and at all different levels. Its not that "exclusive" at breck.

But like Evan said, you'll find this everywhere, unfortunately, not just in skiing. Its an insecurity thing. Their loss.

Wouldn't think it by your username, but you're always dropping wisdom.

Just neg them until you've destroyed their self image and form a relationship with you to gain your acceptance. It works with women so there's no reason to think it wouldn't work with park rats too.

False. Check any 27 year old local surfer who has a few insta followers and is semi decent at surfing. Maybe with skiing tho.

Todd Richards was my favorite snowboarder when I was growing up. I remember a quote from a magazine interview with him. The interviewer asked if he had any advice for kids getting into snowboarding and his answer was along the lines of “stay away from the scumbags in the sport”. It kind of impressed in my young brain that not everyone who rides park is someone I want to associate with.

I mean some people don't grow up, doesn't define the entire age group.

Lately I’ve been approaching people and starting a conversation w them. There’s a bunch of people at Gunstock NH who lap the park all the time and I started talking to a couple of them and they’re fucking chillers (I also know they’re NS members so I shee you boys ?). They all rip super hard and throw down sick stuff and are super humble about their skiing which is rad. People may come off as sort of stand-offish but I bet if you just said something like, “yo I like your skis man” they’d be chill af

Yuh this is facts. Once I invited a dude to come build and sesh a bc jump and he said "nah dude my crew is pretty big already I can't"

Yeah man ok

Lol why would you ever want to hang out with someone like that. Sounds like you dodged a bullet.

It’s not exclusive. It’s just everyone that skis park is cringy as fuck. Including myself. It’s just a matter of being chill. 99% of park skiers are looking to chill with some other chill people. The other 1% is at Park City. Like you don’t have to be good to be chill. I’m one of the better skiers at my home mountain and I hang out with kids who can hardly do a rail. I don’t care they’re funny and they make me a better skier and make my time grinding more enjoyable. Most importantly tho they’re chill. so you’re either too intimidated to approach said people and you’re assuming they’re assholes because they’re good or you’re not chill.

If I'm hiking a rail alone please don't talk to me, I'm trying to cultivate Adam Delorme vibes. Also I'm baked

Skiing enlightenment comes from embracing the fact that you suck. Free yourself from the need to perform for others or meet some nebulous minimum requirement to consider yourself a 'park skier' and you will find that most of those feelings of being looked down on or out of place actually came from within...

Or maybe your home mountain culture just sucks idk.

Only place I’ve ever experienced this in BC is Whistler. A lot of dudes out there think their shit don’t stank because they have 1000 IG followers.

At most places I’ve been, people can be a little reluctant to talk to people that they don’t know/recognize but usually if you just go talk to them they are pretty chill.

If I was skiing with a bunch of friends I wouldn’t go up to someone skiing by themselves and try and get them to join, but if someone came up and asked if they could ski with us, No one would care as long as they weren’t a total jabroni.

Most people are cool like they seem cliquey and they kinda are, but they wont like tell you to fuck off.

If you say “I am good at park” at any point in your life you’re doing it wrong

Met a kid at a mountain I ride 5 times a season who always goes alone, he’s dope and we matched energies

Naw in america we have rails and jumps and stuff, too

I was that kid the other day hiking a rail by myself and someone stopped and hiked with me for next hour and we tried new stuff and got clips of each other, my favorite day skiing yet this year

And this.

honestly op i think theres alot more hate of park skiers registered by non park skiers than there is hate directed at ppl who are still learning park. If you have some humility, and give at least a reasonable amount of respect when talking to someone who is good at park they will most likely show you love.

but honestly if you are like “why do you kids spend all your time in the park all day because ya know park skiers arent real skiers”,

then these park skiers will shit all over you and to be honest if you come at them like that you deserve to be shit on.

No wonder kids are douchy in the park. Kelowna is know as klown town due to the overwhelming amount of douchbags and bitches. Everyone acts like clowns to fit a mold. Its not like that everywhere. Out east, kids in the parks are super friendly.

I feel that... especially as a woman.

A lot of guys don't really let you into their crews... no matter how good you are. They'll just let you ride with them a day or two as a means to try to fuck you.

What I've learned from all the years of heartache is that to get in, you have to take the lead.

You gotta be the one to break the ice;

You gotta control the tone with a positive, energetic, funny, inclusive attitude;

You gotta be the one to hit everyone up for the group rides and events;

You gotta be the one to talk people up so everyone feels confident and welcome.

You gotta be the one on social media hosting content, maintaining the communication lines, and keeping everyone stoked.

Being frustrated because vapid egomaniacs won't let you ride with them? Psssshhh screw that. Just leads to getting bummed out, questioning your capacity, going less days, trying so hard to fit in that you end up in uncomfortable social situations.

OP, you're more than welcome to join our Slush Sluts crew.

One trick that helps is to wear clothing that looks like you found at goodwill or something (at least your jacket).

That way if you grease a trick you look extra pro, and if you fall off the rail early spectators will assume you are coming along well in learning how to ride park ;)

hyland hills has kind of a social hierarchy associated with skill caused it’s ruled by teenagers

i think this stems from the fact that when it comes to learning tricks, it is fairly easy to tell what progression is. if you're just making pow runs through the trees (assuming one person isn't obviously struggling) it may feel like there is more parity between two riders and they are sharing the stoke. on the flip side, a 540 is obviously harder than a 180. a cork 7 is harder than a 360. a 450 on is harder than a lipslide. so if two skiers are observing each other in the park, comparisons are likely or even inevitable. some people struggle with the idea that someone else might be better than them, or perhaps encroaching on their 'territory' - even if that just refers to the strata of tricks they're performing. the way some people react is to be hostile instead of friendly and/or encouraging. it is too bad but is just human nature. if you chose to be friendly, collaborate with others, make friends, etc., i think you'll have more fun on the hill and just generally have a better life!

it’s organized by how many pieces of gear you lose when you boost off the field goal.

I made my first trip to perfect north slopes last week and I was super impressed with the culture. Everybody knew each other's names and it felt like one big group of friends. I rode chair lifts with probably three or four different sets of guys. It was refreshing compared to the normal gang mentality at most ski hills.

i love to find the homies skiing me and my friend made 2 mew friends in the last week at sundance skiing and friending new people is awsome everyone is homie when your skiing
