Why is park skiing so exclusive?

A lot of guys don't really let you into their crews... no matter how good you are. They'll just let you ride with them a day or two as a means to try to fuck you.

What I've learned from all the years of heartache is that to get in, you have to take the lead.

You gotta be the one to break the ice;

You gotta control the tone with a positive, energetic, funny, inclusive attitude;

You gotta be the one to hit everyone up for the group rides and events;

You gotta be the one to talk people up so everyone feels confident and welcome.

You gotta be the one on social media hosting content, maintaining the communication lines, and keeping everyone stoked.

Being frustrated because vapid egomaniacs won't let you ride with them? Psssshhh screw that. Just leads to getting bummed out, questioning your capacity, going less days, trying so hard to fit in that you end up in uncomfortable social situations.

Highlighting this first...

1. There are assholes everywhere. Cliques everywhere. It's not just skiing and you'll encounter this your entire life. Happens a lot in the work place when you're old and...old like me.

2. It's an insecurity issue. 100%. You only see good skiers acting like this...not great skiers. You only see good skateboards acting like this...not great ones. You get my point. The people who are truly great don't give a fuck to vibe people out. They don't have a need to, they're comfortable in their own skin. Well, most of them. Again - there are always assholes out there.

On the flip side...and take this in the nicest way possible. Maybe you're going about it a little wrong and it would be better to just let these sort of things naturally happen. I would say focus a bit more on the skiing and less on the friends and people will gravitate towards you because of it. Im not saying be a mute on hill but just don't force it. No one likes to feel like they are being tailed by anyone that they don't know.

I've personally always had better luck making friends on hill (and in general) when I don't really think about it.

Only place I’ve ever experienced this in BC is Whistler. A lot of dudes out there think their shit don’t stank because they have 1000 IG followers.

At most places I’ve been, people can be a little reluctant to talk to people that they don’t know/recognize but usually if you just go talk to them they are pretty chill.

If I was skiing with a bunch of friends I wouldn’t go up to someone skiing by themselves and try and get them to join, but if someone came up and asked if they could ski with us, No one would care as long as they weren’t a total jabroni.
