Why EVERYBODY Should Wear A Helmet.

I know it sounds cliche and futile, but I really think parks should monitor wearing a helmet, not necessarily forcing it, just advocating for it in some way. I think they should definitely be made mandatory in competitions of all levels, because that's when you're going your hardest

This summer when i went to camp, i had overshot the airbag not to complete flat, but 2 feet from the edge. As i came down i had smacked my head real good, but since i had my helmet on it took all of the impact and my head did not. I didn't realize the damage i had dome tom y helmet till i was home and saw a huge crack on the inside. It is safe to say that without my helmet i would be is some very big trouble right now!

What the fuck does that have to do with this thread? The point of this thread is even that no matter how good you are some completely random fall can kill you or make you retarded/ unable to ski again. That people who who are ridiculous good at the sport and feel untouchable to an extent can just get completely rocked by one random fall and have it change their lives.

I just don't understand what the point of posting that was? Some of the best people in the world are talking about how they were having a routine day and almost died from a random crash, and you post that?

I mean there is an art to falling, there is an art to skiing/ riding properly. Even with experience and knowing how to take a fall like a champ you can still get completely wrecked on something that you've done a million times.

Helmets are for extra style points in a comp and also to protect your shit. Just wear one, you may think you look dumb then but when you fuck up your brain your gonna look a hell of a lot worse.

What is so hard for you to understand people who don't wear helmets? You have a death wish? You wanna die young? I will always wear a helmet and never underestimate it.

Probably doesn't have a good reason. I know a lot of friends that never wore one so it's weird to start now. For kids I think it's more about being a badass.

I remember transworld 5-10 years ago some pro hit an urban dfd start of the season. Wasn't even that big or steep. He fell on try and put himself into a coma I think. Ended up being alright, but it had him realizing that something bad can happen when you aren't expecting it.

I don't think people should dwell on the dangers of the sport. You can't have fun if you're thinking, this could kill me, this could break me, before every trick. At the same time it's nice to be aware of it enough to where you don't assume you're invincible. I wear a helmet because I've smashed my head up pretty good, and seen other people far worse. At the same time I don't dwell on that in the park. I'm simply aware of it and try to keep my brain intact.

They need to make those #helmetsarecool stickers in die cut so I can actually put one on my helmet!

I never wore a helmet when I was a kid. Then I took a dive in the trees and rolled all the way down; I saw three trees whizz by my head. Fucked up my elbow and my knee, they didn't work quite the same for about 5 years, but I lucked the fuck out in terms of my head. I bought a helmet after that.

Then I was skating some years later, and I tried to pull a slide in my friend's driveway, it didn't work, and I ended up skating right into his mom's parked SUV; I just had time to stand up so I wouldn't get jacked under the car. My head slammed into the rear window and I got a minor concussion. I lost my hearing and my equilibrium for about 15 seconds. It was pretty terrifying. I don't know how much worse that concussion would have been if I hadn't been wearing a helmet, or how much less of an issue it would have been if my helmet was a certified one.

WEAR HELMETS.

I personally wear a helmet because I like my brain. Honestly though, at my mountain at least helmets are part of the park image.

Anybody else see stars all the time? Even if I land on my feet somewhat hard I see them. I've jumped off a ledge maybe 4 feet to my feet and seen them. I'm used to it but it def keeps me wanting to protect whats left of my brain.

Mehhh i would rather die of a head injury then suicide. Would make me seem less like a piece of shit.

I wouldn't doubt it but I'm not really for it. I believe in being a big boy and being able to make my own decisions about myself, no matter how stupid they are.

That said I'd be more down with it being a resorts policy than being an actual law.

I'm surprised there isn't anything for kids though. I believe at least in some states there is for riding bikes. Not sure for anything else though.

It's so easy to pop on a helmet. Get a good one and it'll look cool and you can also hide it like Jed Anderson did for years under his hood until he stopped wearing them. Just wear one

I probably would have had some concussions if it wasn't for my helmet. I noticed how good of an idea it is after bouncing my helmet off of rails

It has nothing to do with being cool or not being cool. First of all, forget being cool. Being cool is a way of saying, I care a lot what everyone else thinks about me. Maybe it's time to stop and think about what you think about you for once. Cool changes every time you ask a different person what cool is. Everyone is cool. Being your self is cool. We all take risks in life everyday. Everything that "happens to you in life" is a direct manifestation of your own energies. That information resides in your auric field and you bring it to this dimensional experience by your own thoughts and actions. People who wear helmets manifest the same experiences as people who don't wear helmets. The ultimate lesson is that the Universal vibration or "God" is a continuous and infinite Unconditional Love that is so strong and immense, it takes videos like this to help you realize just a hint of how powerful it is. Judging someone who wears or does not wear a helmet is equally retarded as judging someone who got hurt or killed.

Why is NS so obsessed with safety these days? Our whole sport is about danger and risk. Wear a helmet if you want, but don't be that person who tells me what how i should live my life. If it was up to some people we wouldn't even be allowed to ski park for safety reasons.

Fuck helmets.

Jk. Giro saved my life.

About 3 years ago I crashed, slid down the hill, hit a tree with the back of my head, spun me around, hit a tree with my forehead, spun around again and ended up in a tree well. Some guy saw it from the lift, rode it up the rest of the way, went to patrol, told them that I was dead, patrol skied down and I was still out. I remember what was going on in my mind when I was out, which is really weird. I also had an out of body experience. When the first patroller arrived he had no signs of consciousness and went to take my pulse and didnt feel anything. He was trying to move me and getting ready to start compressions for cpr when I came back to. He said it freaked him the fuck out because he was positive I was dead. Took me down in the sled and from there to the ER. My helmet had been practically split in half. ER doc ended up throwing it away, bastard. Severe concussion but no other damage. Doc said I was most likely dead for a while and my out of body was from a DMT trip from the endorphin and chemical release when you die.

I have a poc now btw. Fuck dying again. 8/10, would recommend only once

This isn't an entirely invalid point people. Yes, our sport will always be dangerous, and there will always be the few people who suffer life altering injuries to the brain (helmet or not), spine, and other less tragic but still serious injuries such as knee issues. However, IMO, the key issue with helmets and brain injuries is threefold.

First of all brain injuries are in a league entirely of their own when it comes to severity. Now, of course this point is highly opinionated, but I would say that losing your cognitive abilities is probably far more devastating than paralysis or any other injury, mostly to your family/friends who has to deal with the reality that their loved one is a vegetable. At least if you are paralyzed, your mind is still there.

Secondly, in light of the first point, also unlike other injuries, it is VERY easy to dramatically lower your risk of life altering injury, simply by putting a pretty benign piece of foam on your skull. Some might say that, if we are all for protection and safety, why not put on full body armor? The difference is that helmets aren't limiting your movement, are fairly low profile, and it's not like they make a trick any easier. If you smack your head hard on stairs hitting an urban rail, your session is done, helmet or not. Whereas if you take a body hit on stairs with some padding, you might have an advantage. Helmets don't make getting a trick any easier.

Thirdly, the stigma around helmets, from both snow sports and other sports such as skateboarding, creates an environment where kids entering the sport think its not cool to wear a helmet, and that's something that shouldn't exist IMO. Kids especially should be able to wear helmets without being criticized. It's easy to forget that pros are PROFESSIONALS. They know what they are doing, and just because your favourite pro hits a quad kink with a beanie on doesn't mean that you have the same experience or skillset to be able to do the same without getting hurt.

Of course everyone can do what they want, its up to the rider at the end of the day. As for adults, they can make their own calls about wearing a helmet or not, and that's on them if they get hurt. I think parents should make sure their kids wear a helmet though.

Beanies and hats are much safer. If you drop a helmet from a tower, it will shatter. Meanwhile the snapback gently glides to safety.

This is what my father did. My brother and I either wore one or he wouldn't let us ski.

After hitting a tree, resulting in a broken shoulder blade and a mild concussion I'll never ride without one again........ok there were a couple times I didn't wear my helmet but I was just dicking around, not doing anything serious.

Either trolling or the most retarded thing anyone has ever taken the time to put in writing

Sick idea! And I always ski with a helmet, it really saved me at least three times while skiing and a 100+ times when people slam the bar down

I always wear a helmet, one time I jumped a rail lip and hit my head on the rail. If it were not for my helmet I would have probley gotten a concussion or worse.

A big factor to get people to wear helmets is to make helmets to fit their heads. I have a couple of friends who cant get helmets due to them not fitting right. I can barely fit into my XXL poc helmet. Most companies don't make helmets big enough.

Big factor other than protecting for brain damage, I find that my helmet deflects a ton of tree branches when skiing east coast trees. If you wear just a hat most trees are going to steal your hat.

I agree with you all now!!!! It's time we as a community take a stand! Let's let the ski hills know that we believe every hill should have a mandatory helmet rule... and while we're at it ,lets ban inverts too! Think of all the unnecessary injuries inverts cause every year! And maybe even one day resorts will listen and we can get foam padding on the sides of rails and the landings of jumps to prevent boo-boos from occurring. Who's with me?!

Back in 2012 I had a TBI from getting hit by a border. I had a helmet on, and it cracked he inner and outer shell. That sucker saved my life. I missed over four months of school, had optic nerve damage, hearing damage and scent damage. Nearly two years later I still haven't made a full recovery. Please please please wear a helmet. They save lives guys.
