Why does black history month exist?

1257884385stop-posting-kitty.jpg

The whole thign is total bullshit. African AAmericans get so many freebies and advantaes for just being black its not even funny. Scholarships only for black people. Jobs and other special privlages just for being black. And all because america has been forced into a guilt trip for somethign that happened almost a centurary ago. We dont owe them any special privelages and by seeing them as different and recognizing that they are by giving "special privlages" we are keepign segregation alive. On another note is we should still owe them for what we did, which was horrible, they should owe us as well because european christians, white folk, where enslaved in africa long before the americas were even discovered they enslaved us as well...

And no I am not at all racist i have several good friends and family that are black.

this post was so full of fail it was hard to chose what to quote, but my favorite is always shit like this

the random anecdotal "i dont hate black people, i know a few" always makes me lol

read the thread, youve posted the same idiotic bs that every other person has in here, it has all been addressed, its all quite wrong.

thank you.

finally someone gets it and can present it in a good way.

So i'll throw in my opinion of the whole thing finally...

Black history is a fascinating, tragic, and amazing story. You can compare it asians, irish, whoever...but those are nearly what black history is. We learn it because it's part of American history. Without africans being brought to the US, we wouldn't at all be what we are.

Black history month is a good thing. Regardless of whether or not you believe in modern equality between races, the point of this month is to show what happened.

There are plenty of reasons as to why it should or shouldn't exist, but to tell the truth....what's it matter? It's not as if anyone is treated any differently during this month. It's just a month to learn about, and celebrate their heritage. If you don't wish to, then simply don't. It will not be forced upon you...

As long as black people in this country want their own things (black history month, specific scholarships, affirmative action) they will be treated differently than white people. You can't have your cake and eat it too in this situation.

so you agree with the poepe that say that african americans should get scholarships just for being black? I have read the thread and i see no answer for why that is correct.

The definition of racism, as according to the english dictionary, is

1.

animosity toward other races: prejudice or animosity against people who belong to other races

2.

belief in racial superiority: the belief that people of different races have different qualities and abilities, and that some races are inherently superior or inferior

according to definition 1 discriminating against whites and other races by offering black only scholarships is rascism, is it not? Tell me how that is fair.

these black scholarships, are you attempting to refer to affirmative action? or are you talking about from various black social groups. because there are also scholarships for things like being tall, should we abolish those too for being discriminatory?

Being tall? You mean being a basketball player? That is merit based, and actually if you think about it a black scholarship.

Black people should be stoked on slavery, with out it they wouldn't have been bread in the US to be ultimate athletes.

(disclaimer: I meant everything above in a joking context. Although this disclaimer should prevent any bitching and in general, any retort where the poster assumes a moral high ground, I know this to be impossible because of the seemingly insensitive and racist remarks above. However, are positive stereotypes racist? Were African Americans not chosen because of their large stature and strength by slave owners?)

I am refering to scholarships and schools such as listed on this site, (http://blackstudents.blacknews.com/), where the scholarships and schools are exclusive to the black community. And i have never heard of a scholarship for being tall, though if there is one that would also be an example of a form of racism and if we, the US, wish to be a hate/racism free country it should not be allowed.

tall is now a race eh? interesting.

please explain to me how that is hateful or racist anyway? by your logic all scholarships are "racist" (ill assume you mean discriminatory) because they give advantages to one type of person or another. whether its musicians, or tall people, or those that are athletically inclined.

these scholarships arent simply because the individual is black, its because they are black and have done something to merit it. sure you may not qualify for it as a white guy, but thats no more discriminatory than saying its not fair that i cant get an athlete-scholar scholarship because im not an athlete.

again, colorblindness does not encourage a lack of racism, it just perpetuates ignorance. there is a difference between discrimination and the acknowledgment of different groups and cultures.

Those scholarships are not the same as government financial aid, they are supported by private money, people can spend their money how they want and if its going towards people getting an education whats wrong with that. Did you guys get screwed out of scholarships when applying to school or something? im sure if you spend as much time finding those black scholarships you could have found some your eligible for.

My town has a scholarship just for residents of the town who are attending school, is that discriminatory against surrounding towns that cant afford such a scholarship?

And if you guys are so into equality for all why dont you donate some money or at least time to help lower income families who could use your help.

"A bone to a dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with dog when you are just as hungry as the dog." Jack London, The Road.

White people care about equality only when they are missing out on something.

but thats the thing, they arent missing out on anything, yet they seem to be under the impression they are...

You were the one who brought up the beign tall scholarships so im not sure what you are getting at there....

Schoalrships are based on merit. You do well you work hard whether it be through acedemics, atheletics, leadership or someother admirable trait or acheivement. Scholarships should be open to all ethnicites who have met such goals. there shouldnt be a seperate class for African Americans. There isnt a seperate class of scholarships for only tall people, or only white people, or only mucisions why should there be one for only black people. Why should they have colleges that only black people can get into? Scholarships or colleges that are selective to whom they let in based on merit is not racist but when they limit it to whom they let in based on the way they are born is racist. Theres nothign stopping someone from workign hard in a particular feild to succeed but one cannot not work hard to become black. by having scholarships and colleges for only african americans people are baisicly saying blacks can not compete with the rest of socitety so we are goign to give them there own colleges and scholarships so that can be segregated from the rest. That is racist.

i was replying to the thread above which said if musicians get scholarships that that is just as racist as black people getting them. Read in context.

idiot.

Too bad being a musician isn't being a type of race and is something that requires "talent" or skills and ability to do. Even reading in context bringing up a musician makes you a moron.

I didnt read any of the shit in this thread but for the record I do not like to be reffered to as white. I am European-American. My grandparents had many hardships and i would like March to be Irish history month. St. Patricks Day is March 17th, but that is not enough. I want a whole damn month of green beer!

affirmative action just continues the stereo type that black people can't do anything with out help, so ya it is racist.

Whites are becoming a minority in the US, its like 50.1% minorities and 49.9% white, don't quote thouse numbers i know they are wrong.

White privilege? whats that? Im the whitest kid youll ever meet, iv never been given anything due to my skin color, no scholarships, or getting in to a school. So give me proof,

sometime if im mad bored im gonna put together a quick lecture on racism in the united states with links to sources and evidence for everything and post it on here. theres just way too much ignorance on here and it gets old arguing with people who repeat the same 5 things, all of which are stupid

1) stereotype is one word, dick licker

2) if you can't provide accurate figures, your argument does not count, fudge packer

3) you most certainly take white privilege for granted. if you ever want to join a country club, live in an exclusive co-op, marry a white girl with conservative parents, etc, you are excercising your white privilege. Just because you're too blind to see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist, donut puncher

Holy fuck this thread is crazy. What ever, I'm not gonna throw in my two cents because it's already been said a hundred times and I'm sure no one really wants to read it.

If you wanna truly get rid of racism, stereotypes, discrimination, etc. promote interracial marriages, after a while, we will all be one race. Then there will be oppression due to nationality.

Racism exists. The argument under my third point essentially can be distilled as white people don't have to deal with that racism.

Being racist doesn't necessarily mean you don''t like them. DURRRRRRRRP
You could say "All black people love watermelon, and I love all black people"
^That's still racist.

my uncle applied for a job but a black man that had a less impressive resumé than him ended up getting it, because the company had to hire a certain percentage of minorities. how awesome is that

The counter example is that I would never be able to marry a black girl with parents who are really into the whole black power movement.

Don't give me tons of examples of white people's privileges, I'm just pointing out the flaw in his statement.

I'll concede that the marriage example may have been a little weak. But I stand by my overarching assertion.

read the thread dipshit, theres been proof all through it.

affirmative action is flawed. ill be the first to admit it. but the alternative would be basically no minorities in college etc, thanks to reasons ive already typed paragraphs about, and wont again.

whites may be a numerical minority soon, but they still run the country. look at anyone in power, government, or corporate. 99% of em are white.

Well I know you know those number are wrong, but they are very, very wrong. White people make up 80% of the USA, not 49.1%, and most affluent areas are probably closer to 100% white. Of course with billions living in poverty and globalization making those that are poor very much aware of our privileged life there will be lots of immigration, but don't worry you have a political party devoted to keeping the poor (both in your country and abroad) poor, and the rich relatively rich.

And im sure youve never experienced "white privilege", assuming you live in an extremely white area where race is relatively uniform, being white won't do much against other white people. However, you probably haven't experienced (and if you have... doubtful, but probably not very substantial) a lack of privilege due to your race, something which most minorities do.

why is that? are you implying that black people are un able to compete with their white counterparts for college admission, jobs, etc?

(that was half sarcastic)

but really, this post kinda sounds bad IMO. if a black person is most qualified let them have the job, if the white person is most qualified let them have the job.
