why do sking movies suck so much ass??

Ya, I didn't read them all cause they were too long and I didn't want to, but dont call that shit CR does in front line switch in pow, that is fucking laughable. That is just switch in like 2 inches of corn snow. That trick tip CR had in FREEZE about a 180 to switch in pow, that was goddamn hilarious, that was no where near switch into powder. And by the way skiers can land at mach 3 switch into pow, it isn't even that hard, if you landed as much switch in pow as you did forward you would be just as good at it, it's just that for every ten BC jumps you land forward in pow you probably try one switch, well you arn't going to progress reall fast doing that. Switch into deep powder (atleast a foot or two) isn't even that hard.

 
im wiht jon on tis one...although he might not have expressed his opinion on movies quite as clearly as some of you needed to ...he has a very good point...if i ever wanted to see an amazingly edited movie...ill just pop in a skateboard movie...if i ever wanted a damn good edited movie with stuff i could relate to somewhat ill pop in something like afterbang (havent seen VIVID yet) but skiing movies are fucking awesoem too, real good edting, its just that they havent been making ski movies as long as snowboard movies and same thing with snowboard and skating vids compared...snowboarding videos will get better with years as there is going to be even more demand for that..and same with skiing, more demand is gooing to mean evern sicker videos' not only in tricks concerns..but in editing and flow and feel and soudntrack and everything about it...but jsut right now, snowboarding movies own skiing moves...

Interesting thread. Now I realise just how far ahead SNoboarding is. However, I saw pulse and wasnt crazily impressed. I loved how huge and styly everything was but I think skiing will reach that soon. We need every skier to be Candide.

if ski movies progress as fast as freestyle skiing has, it won't be to long before ski movies are up to snowboard movies. For starters, tone down the hip hop. watch afterbang for music variety. also, snowboard movies have more of a sense of humor with dumbass shit that those crazy shredders do. also, do not over edit.

im gonna have to agree with smuggs.snowboarding is a lot sicker than skiing, and is always 1 step ahead. sking is also sick.

i really dont think its easy to land switch in pow though. it is possible, but you can eat shit so hard, and so much easier than forwards. people do 180's into pow, but imagine doing a bio 9 or something, that would be tough, and hard to consistently do.

one thing about the proggression of skiing though.

at superpark 3, on the same jump, cr through a bio 9, and a snowboarder through a bs rodeo 5. whats sicker?

The reason why these movies are better is because there is a higher demand for it. There is a bigger market in snowboarding because more people snowboard.

As skiing grows, the money will flow, and there will be a higher standard as the budget increases.

see i support the direction dave's movies were going in, and possibly may continue to go in in the future. his variety of music was original, like that of afterbang.. but i agree with a lot of people have said, that the rate that free skiing has progressed at is a much higher rate than that of snowboarding, who were the ones to supposively own the terrain park a few years ago. i say give it time, and they will be equal within a few years, but until then, i dont think skiing and boarding can be quite measured to each other in the form of tricks and style because they are so different

Sure, we are behind... but newschool skiing has only been around for about half the time snowboarding has. The only reason I can someone changing sports is because they personally have taken the sport to the limit of its ability. As long as there is room for yourself to improve, then why stop ? Just because top end skiiers, are slightly behind top end snowboarders doesn't mean you are affected in any way. If you're in a sport just because you think it'll relate you to whoever is on top of that sport, you're a cocksmoker who would probably smoke a little cock just because you saw someone you thought was cool do it.

 
alls i have to say is if you want to see that stuff big massive switch landings in powder you do it, you film it, if you want to see all these movies to progress ur gunna have to try to progress it yourself, i suck at skiing but try my hardest and love it, so dont rag the movies, do something about it

Alright I have said this thousands of time before, literally thousands, basically what smuggs is saying. I agree with smuggs and I have said this so many times. Dave Benedek threw all 4 nines filming for afterbang, one didn't make his segment, that's FS 9, BS 9, Switch BS 9 and Switch FS 9. That is the equivalent of a skier throwing regular 9, unnatural 9, switch 9 and switch unnatural 9. No skier is even close to that. Skiing isn't really even progressing that fast, look at Raps, he is throwing all the same tricks in Happy Dayz that he did in '13'. Philou and Pep are the only skiers who take unnatural to any level in Happy Dayz, sure some throw unnatural 3's, fuck who cant throw unnatural 3's. Romain, Jussi, Benedek, Jakko are all throwing both ways atleast to seven off those helmsdale kickers. Jussi pulls a switch backside 9 and then a switch frontside 10 off the helmsadale jump in Afterbang, that is the equivalent of a skier throwing a switch unnatural 9 and a switch 10 over and 130 foot jump, (could also be a switch unnatural 10 and a switch 9), how could you not saying snowboarding is way ahead. I bet this year there is going to be like max 10 switch pow landings in 24/7, and probably a whole ass load of cork 7's Damn, how many cork 7's are in Happy Dayz? How is that progressing, I could be wrong of course. Look at Candides run at the X Games, I know you all think it was the sickest thing ever, it was basically the exact same run he threw at all the big comps last year, just bigger. I think a lot sicker run that Candides X-Games run would have been Air (right wall), Air, 5, unnatural 7, switch 7, alley oop 9. That would have been so much sicker than like flares and and flatspins, sure they were big. And ya, rails, there are like no rails in afterband or vivid. The rails in Strike 3 were just ridiculous. Dont have somebody pulling you while your stuck in your bindings so you can jump on a rail - that's stupid, that's ridiculous......I dont believe in bringing snow to a rail and having fools pull me into in......biting skateboarding is okay, but doing it that much is stupid. The skiers who are progressing it right now are Belan, Larose, Pep, and some others.

NONE! so why does it matter what other people are doing? what matters is what you can do and what you love about the sport. i dont see why you would want to change sports because another sport has higher standards. congratulations to all the pros who started doing butters before skiing, but why should that change your opinion about which sport is 'better'...it better not, or else you got some issues to deal with.

1983--Jake Burton Carpenter puts on the National Snowboarding Championships in the spring at Snow Valley, Vermont. Jake Burton, Andy Coghlan, and the Burton team members threatened to boycott the event because they felt halfpipe had nothing to do with snowboarding and should not be considered in the overall. Other's claim a highback was built earlier by Louis Fornier so Jeff's claim to the highback is up for discussion. Ultamitly this a MAJOR factor for the the freestyle progression of snowboarding.

1985--Metal edges are introduced on Sims 1500 FE and Burton Performer models, their winter production models. This ends the era of surfing-influenced fin design once and for all as snowboards become more compatible with ski technology. Yet another HUGE factor in the progresion of freestyle snowboarding.

1985--Absolutely Radical, the first magazine exclusively about snowboarding, appears in March. Six months later the name is changed to International Snowboard Magazine. The birth of the snowboarding media! Over a decade before The introduction of FREEZE magazine. Back at this time skiers were still enjoying the now defunct SNOW COUNTRY magazine. See if you can find one. Its GAY!

1985--Sims introduces the first signature model snowboard in their winterline, bearing Terry Kidwell's name. The Kidwell is also the first freestyle board with a rounded tail. The first free ride marketed Pro Model ski did not apear till over a decade later, and it wasn't even geard towards the freestyle movment as we know it today.

1987--Chuck Barfoot and his company (avalanche) introduce the first twin-tip freestyle shape with an identical nose and tail. The board is designed by Canadians Neil Daffern, Ken and Dave Achenbach.

AGAIN a DECADE ahead of the first modern marketed twin tip ski the 1080. (now don't scream at me about the olin mark 4 or even the k2 poacher. The Mark 4 was geared for ballet, the poacher was a twin tip ski for terrain park riding, but no one really knew what to do with it and it went away.)

1987--Transworld SNOWboarding Magazine publishes first issue in the fall. A DECADE ahead of Freeze. This could be a good place to really start a comparison of freestyle snowboarding and skiing. sports.

1987--In September, Wrigley's chewing gum utilizes snowboarding in a national commercial. Craig Kelly, Bert LaMar, Tom Burt, and Jim Zellers appear in an aerial romp filmed by *Greg Stump.*

1990--Vail Ski Resort tries a new approach by developing an in-bounds obstacle area called a 'snowboard park.' The area is intended to cater to a growing snowboard market and other resorts quickly follow suit.

1991--By now, the pro surfer/pro skater crossover to snowboarding is prevalent.Skaters Steve Caballero and Lance Mountain have been riding since the early 80s at least, Tony Hawk, Kevin Staab, and Joe Johnson have been riding for years. Surf standouts like Gary Elkerton, Mike Parsons, and Noah Budroe bite the snowboarding bait, and most other pro surfers ride regularly, have tried it, or at least have developed an opinion or two about it, more importantly they brought the Skate surf style that everyone is currently emulating in snowboarding AND skiing. Its currently 2003, so lets just say for arguments sake that modern freestyle snowboarding just appeared in 1991 that gives them a six year head start to progress their style to what it is today, but realisticaly its probaly more like 10 or 12 years, because they started with more or less of nothing.

1993-- Snowboarding's third wave of snowboard manufacturers spring up and in the fall of 1993 there are over 50 different companies marketing snowboards to the consuming public. This would be inline with what we are seeing now with Armada, Line, 4frnt, and undoubtably the other companies that will come out of the wood work in the coming few years. Lets backtrack to the first twin tip snowboard in 1987, thats a difference of 7 years, right in there with skiing which has taken from 1997 or 98 with the 1080 and the enemy, till 2002 with companies like Armada and 4frnt. Line does deserve mention, however until recent years skiing wasn't their primary focus. Arugue it if you want, its just my oppinion, and I think nothing less of line because of it.

so let me sum that last point up since its an important one. Seven years from the first twin tip snowboard to the major birth of new blood industry, Skiing has accomplished this feat in about the same time, and depending on who you talk to possibly less. SO to drive the point home, skiing from an idustry stand point has progressed at more or less the same rate as snowboarding, just a decade behind, which gives the athletes, producers, mag publishers and photographers of snowboarding a ten year advantage in STYLE etc. to see how far skiing has come in six years from PBP's State of Mind to Propaganda (which I consider the most ground breaking ski video to date) is revolutionary when it is compared to 17 or so years of progression that snowboarding was affoarded. The gap is closing. Mainly because skiers DO borrow from things already learned by snowboarders, and it won't be long on till skiers are on the same plane (I'd argue that they are on some levels), or even surpass them, just wait, or better yet, shut the fuck up and go do it yourself.

I guess this whole thing is about perspective and taking in the big picture. As far as ski videos go, it might be awhile till there is enough money in the industry to fully suport new forward thinking producers. Currently TGR and MSP each bring in way over a quarter million in sponsor dollars per movie they produce, and that leave scraps for anyone else, way less then what one needs to produce and promote a video the way it needs to be done to sell in any large quantities, somthing that atracts sponsors to a video in the first place. A vicious circle.

 
Oh but the fact of the matter is, like many people above have stated: who really gives a fuck if skiing is cool or progressive, I do it because I ENJOY IT!

if smuggs wants to talk shit about skiing then fine. ski movies are newer to the scene than snowboarding movies. maybe they're not as good in editing all that other shit, but the content (exactly the tricks in them) is awesome. they'll make their way up. newschool is the future of skiing. its advanced fast and i'm sure the movies will keep goin at the same pace. snowboarding and skiing are equal. skiing just doesn have as many followers cuz everyone and their grandma can jump on a board and call themselves a snowboarder. when u ski, uve gotta work at it and ski good then call urself a rescpectable skier.

Just look at snowboarding when it first started to become mainstream in the early 90's or so. Were all the skiers not the ones saying basically all this same shit about snowboarding, as the snowboarders are saying about the newschools skiers ? Its the same thing. Snowboarding has been around longer than newschool skiing, so of course its going to be further ahead? Its a pretty simple concept that you don't even need to think about. Its like ragging on a 6 year old kid for not being able to fun as fast as his 15 year old brother. Ya dig?
