But I think emo origionated from a more punk/hardcore style of music, therefore bands like Silverchair, while being guitar-driven alternative rock, would not be emo, and bands like The Used, My Chemical Romance and new AFI would be emo.

Emo is all based on lyrics. Not sound. LYRICS. If they "sound emo" to you, you need to make sure you are reading into the lyrics. And one or two sad songs on an album doesnt make you emo.

SUM41, A Simple Plan, Newfound Glory..they are all POP PUNK. NOT emo. The epitemy of emo is Dashboard Confessional.

If you don't even know what your talking about, don't make your dumbass allogations. I'm sure your some 14 year old moron who thinks that they can think for themselves, but your basing all your ideas off stuff you hear from other people. You HAVEN'T developed your mind and you OBVIOUSLY HAVEN'T thought this out well enough.

A lot of emo is far better than Dashboard and is not as mellow and whiney sounding as you would think.

Check out: Greeley Estates, Armor For Sleep, Hawthorne Heights (Leaning more towards screamo), Motion City Soundtrack, Park...the list could go on.

You are simply talking about the mainstream bullshit that you THINK "emo" kids listen to. A lot of kids you also think are "emo", are Hardcore (HXC). Somewhat such as myself. The hxc "scene" is full of kids who you probably think are emo..because they have the long hair and bangs with the spiked up back and girl jeans..but those kids (like myself), listen to shit like Norma Jean, The Chariot, It Dies Today, The Dillinger Escape Plan, etc..

Go download some Norma Jean and The Chariot and you will realize what the fuck I'm talking about. That kind of music is nothing but angry ass screaming and fast drumming and shit. Its very erratic and FAR from emo.

emo= more emotional lyrics, while keeping a good and (usually) fast tempo and beat. ex: weezer, lifetime

pop-punk= songs built to be catchy and radio-feidnly. come on, you cna tell if a song is made to be a hit. ex: simple plan

A lot of people hate because they are just jumping on the bandwagon. For instance, I happen to like two songs buy Good Charlotte. One is from the earlier days..and If you were to hear it, you wouldnt guess it was them, and the other is a collaboration with Goldfinger and Mest.

Screamo, Emo, HXC..all subdivisions of rock.

Sloth, you are a little shithead who's probably in middle school. You attempt to make fun of emo but you have NO IDEA what it is, all you can do is name pop punk bands that everyone agrees suck. Then you try to flaunt your great taste in music, by naming sucessful bands that have achieved mass popularity from 30 years ago..who doesn't like Led Zeppelin or Hendrix?

In my opinion, emo is just post-hardcore with very emotional lyrics and a melodic sound. But people really disagree on what it is. Most really emo kids would say the bands I like aren't emo and they suck. Bands like senses fail, a static lullaby, and armor for sleep, what else would you call them? I don't like "real" emo or screamo, its not very popular for a reason.

By the way, Underoath is a christian band. If you like them, it shouldn't really bother you. The few underoath songs I've listened to don't sound real Christian-y.

Exactly what agentorange mentioned. And if you are going to "hate" on a certain type of music..hate in moderation and have liable facts to back up your personal opinion. Don't just say "I hate emo" to follow the trend of emo-hating people...have a legitimate reason. A legitimit reason being something besides "I dont like guys in tight pants.." or "I think simple plan sucks..so that means all emo kids suck".
