Who here actually believes in God/an afterlife?

i'm a Norse pagan...

we have a pantheon, not laws of conduct, so much as suggestions.

go to "hell"- if your a coward/backstabber/thief, basically a piece of shit waste of space

2 heavens

valhalla, if your a warrior and die in battle

freyas garden, everyone else who just did semi-decent with his life

it's not a tax. it's a tithe it's voluntary. From the bible god asks us to give of ourselves. i'll admit i don't I feel like i'm too broke to give money. But religions don't force you to give, they ask you too. Although if you go back to the 1800's...the catholic church would reserve spaces in the sanctuary depending on how much your family gave to the church, not percentage wise but actual lump sum...this is wrong. asking people to give isn't wrong. And it doesn't say that if you don't give you're going to hell. just a thought.

personally i think its more of a psychological thing. like if you believe theres some god up there, and it makes you feel better about the world, or helps you make sense of it, and gives you a particular world view and set of morals, then good for you. i mean the general message behind all religion is good (the golden rule, don't be a dick/douche/cunt) its just the people who take "the word of god" literally that suck.

^ how can you have mentioned norse mythology on ns and not mention Ullr: the only god, ever, to ski. I am shocked and dissapointed.

And now i'm upset because i already posted my boring real religious views instead of saying i was wiccan or something.

Why is it that some people are saying that they dont believe in religion but they believe in god and the power of jesus? because in my opinion if you believe that christ was a holy being (more so than a prophet) you are a christian for accepting christ and must believe in christianity

?

I am a devout atheist, however strongly agree and follow Buddhist teachings.

I think Buddhism is the best religion hands down (from a philosophical stand point).

its not just the catholic church thats wrong, its all of them, and yes it is voluntary but they make it so the people think "well if i dont give the church money then ill go to hell because im not giving what i have to god and the church" so yes you can say it is totally voluntary but it is really not.

I don't want to argue with you amigo. I bring up the catholic church because its the largest and most public of the churches. I know that at my church they don't press tithing on you, but just suggest it. But really...believe what you want, I don't feel that it's my place to tell you what to do. But personally I feel that I am a christian, but I don't think that every christian needs to be lumped into a "bible-bashing, gay-hating" conservative fool. I'm not a bible basher...i'll never press my religion on someone. I have daily experiences being around gay people and I don't ever feel the need to tell them that "God hates them for being fags"(see westboro baptist church) and I'm more than happy to sit down with someone to discuss religion and beliefs, it's interesting, candid discussions help mold a person and expose them to different walks of life. I think we can all get along and be happy together no matter what our beliefs.

yea i like having conversations with people that dont believe the same thing as me. this was a nice friendly discussion, i liked it, i didnt think it was arguing haha, and i know you could be a christian like that, but just in my experience with christians, most of them try to push christianity on you and hate gays and blah blah, it just bugs me when people do that. people can believe whatever they want and thats cool, but its just when people push their religion on me and try to convert me, it REALLY irritates me. im not saying you pushed it on me or anything, it was just a nice discussion.

this guys like my other self. or im his other self. either way hes pretty cool cuz he thinks like i think. or i think like he thinks. dammit now im confused

I wish there was, but there's too much information placed in front of me to believe in heaven, so I am just gonna treat the life I'm living right now as heaven and do the most fun stuff I can now before I die.

hahaha, i just fgured if people cared, theyd find out for themselves, next time i'll be sure to mention skiing

i tend to take catholicism, which is what my family believes, and i kind of have my own version of it. i dont really know how to explain. I firmly belive in God/an afterlife, but everything leading up to that is all kind of a jumbled mess of different types of beliefs for me

O man I completely agree. I was driving back from U Miami (ohio) visiting some friends and two of my buddies we asleep in the car as we pass this tool driving the "you're going to hell"-mobile. He had all decked out with "you're going to hell if you don't believe" and shit like that. And that just made me angry. Christians have a message of peace for the world and some people just take it wayyyy to far and make it crazy and something evil sounding. I think the best way to get some one to believe is just to talk and be chill not press crazy shit on them...it's not fun to have someone else's beliefs pressed on you and I know cuz ive had it happen to me. And yea I totally thought our chat was pretty chill, it's just tough to do online cuz you can't make out the difference between emotions haha.

There are too many unanswered questions to believe in a religion. Why believe in a specific religion? A religion is basically an unproven opinion as is any other. The world we live in is full of these unproven opinions that clash for no reason but to overpower one another. Why would I believe in such myths? No religion has the edge on the other, all are at the same level.

On the other hand, we should celebrate what we really have, each other. Human existence is a beautiful thing as is nature in it's entire form. We should celebrate being on this earth because life is too short to worry about what is going to happen after. Lives are sometimes given up to religion but for what? Are these humans too afraid to live a life without having to rely on themselves? Your life is a path that you pave yourself. No power will help me pave it. Force comes from within, we are our masters, live your own life. We can go at any time...

I beleive in a higher power (a god per say) but not any story to go with it like how does anyone know anything about jesus? were they like with him? he didnt write the bible so alot of what he said could have been greatly mis interpreted and may not even apply to our society today so much has changed how could someone beleive that that their views cant be different after like 2000 years? Its weird but then like why is anything anything at all very deep thread sort of

I am about the afterlife......see you guys in the lesbian milkshake hottub in heaven after i die

end of thread.

the bible was written by a bunch of romans. there was actually a huge debate over whether jesus was just to be another disciple or the son of god. jesus is one of my favorite people in history. but theres no way he had anything to do with any sort of god. he was just a man who walked around with his 12 best friends and did good things to people. watch the first half hour of zeitgeist.

I feel like the teachings are still very relevent and if everyone could follow what he taught regardless of religion the world would be a much more peaceful place.

i think there is no possible way we could find out, so do whatever the hell you want. but think back to evolutionary process. do you think animals believe in god? obviously not, theyre not concious enough. humans have hit that stage that our minds are so complex that we developed this idea of a higher power or someone that watches over us. religion might just be a stage in the evolutionary process.

im confirmed, but being that im not a catholic i didnt get like $500 bucks for it. my church is part of the UCC(aka Barack Obama's church) and i want to believe in god and all that, but im not sure i can. (science and shit). However what i do believe in are the principals of the church ya know peace, brotherly love, all that.

i don't like the idea of organized religion becuase i think it allows for followers to be easily taken advantage of by people with power and influence....i think im more of an agnostic...i don't beleive we can ever know...but i also like eastern religions and buddhism...i totally like the idea of cyclical nature and reincarnation and karma and i think it is a really good way to conduct yourself....

sort of on topic...has anyone else seen the documentary Jesus Camp? such a freaky movie....

i kinda beleive in god but i more so beleive in ghosts and truly hope ghosts are real or that u come back as another animal or sumthing of that sort

some people think we came from evolution at one point in time. I think thats total bullshit. The real question is in this thread who doesn't believe in god/after life. It's real, there is an after life.

i wrote my senior thesis on religion and how it has way too much say in this country. I think much of organized religion is bullshit. I do not need a scandalous priest or an insanely religious mother to force me to go church and pray to Jesus. I am still in a personal dilemma in this question, but as of now i do believe there to be some form of a higher power.

I am a Protestant Christian and yes I do live with hope and faith of an afterlife (aka heaven) and yes I am proud of it because I have someone to live for and have structure in life

In my opinion, all religions are modern day myths. If you look at ancient greeky mythology, most people say oh wow what interesting stories. People don't actually believe in Zues and all those cats anymore, but at one time they did. I just don't understand why people are unable to look at the broader context of human history and go, 'oh... wait a second, my religion isn't the first religion to ever happen by a long shot and sure as shit won't be the last, maybe I should take it a little less seriously because its probably not a literal truth' But, I think that religion has a place in our world, of course people will always wonder what the deal is with our planet and all that good stuff, it should just be looked at in a more flexible way considering that no human really has any idea what the hell they are talking about when it comes to matters of GOD.

yes very true^

but trust me when you've hiked Mt Washington w/ a 30 pound backpack on your like holy hell there must be a god, or when you in the battlefield you pray to God that you survive, and may return home to your family. However when you're down in the drunges of society(which most of us are) then you're like "Nah there aint no God" or science just goes against it and you dont know what to believe.
