Which car is better

With no factors other than performance involved, the M3 is by far the better car, there is no comparison. But since there's always crap like money, mileage, and warranties, it becomes your decision of what you want to sacrifice or gain. I'd go with the M3 myself, but if you want your warranty you should probably stick with what you have.
 
M3 never was all wheel or 4 wheel drive. you could get an e46 330xi. that would be all wheel drive and somewhat close to the proformance of an m3.
 
even if we dont have powder days think of the days when it s -5 degrees out and your road is a solid piece of ice. a jetta with FWD is gonna kick the M3's handling and avoid skidding etc
 
and you know evos and stis can get a chip too right? and either can just replace the turbines and blow an s4 away. all 3 are waaay sick cars though, price to performance wise, they are unbeatable.
 
i dont know alot about sti's, but a chip for an s4 gets more gain than a chip for an sti, so a chipped sti and a chipped s4 would probably be pretty equal, ive raced a chipped evo and beat him by quite a bit. but ive got dp's diverter valves, lightweight flywheel, and some other stuff.

i love sti's though, i cant decide if i want to sell my s4 for one or not, i know they both do just as well on snow and dirt and all that, but the sti is easier to mod and i wouldnt mind trashing one. but then s4's are so damn nice, and they are such sleepers.
 
I'd think an STi might be a little quicker in the dirt because they're lighter and Subaru puts a little bit of what they learn in the WRC into their cars. And if you want one to be a sleeper it wouldn't take all that much work. All you'd need to do is take off the obnoxious wing, get a front mount intercooler, and replace the hood and it would look just like an RS (of course you'd have to de-badge it as well). But I'm also a Subaru guy so I'm going to be biased toward that car regardless.
 
yeah i saw a wrx turned into an rs, it was sweet. i heard the main difference between audi and subaru with their awd setup is that audi's is more mechanical, and subaru's is more electronic, so with an audi its harder to drive in dirt and stuff, but its more capable. with a subaru its not as capable but its easier to control and everything. i drove a wrx (not sti) on snow and thats exactly how i felt, you could drift it and stuff easily. while with my audi it takes more skill and concentration but you can do whatever you want. so overall their performance is about the same.

i really want audi to make another rally car just to see how they do, since they kicked everyones ass when they did do rally.
 
I think we all do. I remember their group B car got banned because it was too good. Although with the restrictions WRC has now, it's becoming more of a driver's contest rather than the mechanic's.
 
whoever says to go with the jetta over a e36 has no idea what the hell they are talking about, the m3 is by far the better car and will hold its value....in fact you can drive it for 3 years and sell it for what you payed for it, they handle soooo nice and make relaible power from the inline six. basically one of the nicest cars ever made
 
there both nice depends what you really want m3 is going to be more nicer car like but the gl is going to be more reliable probaly
 
vw is known for unrelaible cars, beamers are built to last...just like benzes.....my dads 86 benz had 298,000 miles on it before we got rid of it
 
Is the auto a DSG or just a regular slaughtermatic?

If it's a plan 'ol auto, I say go with the M3 for the shear enjoyment of the drive, but to me the M3 seems like a less practical car. I'd rather have the Jetta if it had a DSG w/tip or a manual. I have a BMW right now and everything's just so damn expensive, I'd rather have the VW I used to have, the VW was more reliable and better on gas, too.
 
its funny how people even compare a jetta to an m3, the e36 m3 is pretty much one of the best cars ever made, it performs way better, its pretty much a perfect car. and the jetta is just a jetta. hell its stupid to compare fwd to rwd anyway, rwd is always gonna be better, plus the jetta is an auto. and im sorry but it isnt fast.
 
I have 3 beamers and they all do quite well in snow for whichever guy said they don't, they are great fuckin cars

You can't even compare these two cars, they are in totally different leagues. You are comparing a front wheel drive vw with a rear wheel drive M. If you want luxury or whatever, get the vw, if you want a mans car that has handling that is still considered excellent by todays standards get the bimmer.
 
dude i know someone with an m3 and it hardly ever has problems, and when it does it is so easy to fix, stuff is easy to get to and simple to work with. you probably wont ever have to take it somewhere.
 
I drove an M3 for a while, and I have to say it was a super super super fun car. Fast, relatively reliable, and great looking. However, no matter what anyone says on here, it is the SHITTIEST car in the winter that I have ever been in. Our driveway was about 15 feet long and if snow was even in the forecast I wouldn't make it up the driveway (obviously I'm embellishing here but it was BAD). I didn't bother reading this entire thread, but I'm assuming you're not getting it to be a winter ride. If you can afford more than one car or don't mind a car that is about as useful as driving a shopping cart from november to march, go for it. It is indeed a sweet car and won't let you down in performance as long as the roads are dry.
 
Great cars, yes, but either you live in Florida or none of those three cars are M3's. I've been in beamers that are great in snow, but he's talking about an M3 and they most DEFINITELY are not.
