When Americans go to other countries what does our accent sound like?

I've got that midwestern accent, i.e. no accent. When I moved out east, everyone on the east coast told me I had a funny accent. I had to correct them and let them know that people in NY, NJ, MA, PA, MD, etc. do, in fact, talk funny and that the rest of the country didn't sound like them.

What do people think about coloradans? I don't think we have any accent at all, is our lack of accent an accent?

Well thats because we are the most important so everyone should hear what we are saying.
Foreign people always talk shit about Americans in the media and shit, but if your not from some stupid place like Wisconsin foreign people are usually excited as fuck to meet you.

I corrected the gentleman trying to charge me 3euros for an apple by saying I am Canadian. I got a free apple instead of a 2500% price increase. I like being Canadian :D

we're loved in europe. last time i was in spain i remember catching heat for being american and saying no no canadian. canada... and the boys were all like OHHHHH CANADA! we loveeeee canada., why didnt you say so! and shit was like that much more light after that. ha.
not gonna lie, american girls love us too. i know at least one or two who will attest to that. not saying that they prefer us over american boys but theres just something about being canadian that makes people smile and be a little more at ease. like we're naturally non-threatening, kind, considerate, and humerous

I kind of think Canadians lack humor. At least a lot of them don't get my dry sense of humor. Might be a northeast US thing and they just don't get it. How would people define the sense of humor in the Northeast US? I know what it's like, i just can't quite describe it. Help me out

oh and has anyone ever heard a very French person speaking English? not even French canadians b/c they are used to speaking it much more, but someone from France who rarely speaks English. Their 'r' sound is pretty funny to hear since the American English 'r' is pronounced at the very front of the mouth whereas the French 'r' is much closer to the throat...makes for some pretty ridiculous pronunciations. But hey, i have trouble when speaking French and trying to make the correct 'r' sound.

I think that Michigan / midwest in general is one of the most accent neutral places ever. We have just no accent.

Oh kids...
Every person in the entire World has an accent unless their group is small and they are the only people speaking their language... such as a tribe of 50 people living in the amazon and they are the only people that speak their language.
So regardless of where you live in the US, you have an accent.
To foreigners, our language does not sound pretty. Our words are fairly harsh but with the inclusion of a significant amount of latin based words into our Germanic based language, it isn't quite as harsh as german/dutch/swedish and the sort.
We emphasize and say letters differently than the English. They have a much rounder version of the language, using the backs of their throats more and rounding their mouth. This provides a more pleasant sound than our front of the mouth and enjoyment of the use of our teeth.
Australians still have the roundness, but can sound a bit more nasaly. A lot of the enjoyment of the accent comes with psychological association.
Women have a tendency to sound better in that we annunciate our words more and do not stress the adjectives the way men do which causes the sentences to flow a bit more smoothly.
To someone who speaks a tonal language like japanese... in terms of pleasantness...
FrenchItalianSpanishPortugeseGreekThe rest of the smaller latin languagessome of the smaller european dialects of german which take in a stronger latin baseUK EnglishAustralian EnglishAmerican EnglishGermanScandanavian languagesRussian/russian dialects
They also get more difficult as you move down. Except that Norwegian, although scandanavian/germanic is supposedly more difficult to learn than russian if you are only learning how to speak.

everybody thinks their accent is normal since it is the same as people's around them but i'm sure if we went down south we wouldn't fit in. i consider my accent to be completely normal but i'm sure there are small things i do that are strictly new england things

i've always wondered what what english sounds like to non english speakers

The purest and most powerful accents in the world are from the east coast anywhere in between new york to the mason dixion line. Minus accents that are from the cities like brooklyn or boston. This is where our country was founded so it is the best.

See that is a prime example right there of how most Americans (but not all) think that they live in the best place in the word and are the best in the world and they see everybody else as lesser than them. Thats what pisses me off It ties in with the ignorance part.I have a few friends that are American but only because they are the few that know that Canadians don't say aboot or live in igloos and accept that they are not better than Canadians or other places in the word.jeez

i just don't see why poeple have to hate on us cause we live in a better country than the bag of shit you call home.....

jk

Like shit they don't. I was seriously blown away when I went to BC and everyone said aboot. I thought people were playing a joke on me.

this. im an american and being with other americans in a foreign country we do sound loud, obnoxious, and ignorant.

I was on vacation in Whistler, how fucking high do you think I was?! Seriously though, I heard a ton of people say aboot. And people always said "i'll give them a ring" instead of "Ill give them a call".

and to someone from the south you do, they dont think that they have an accent either. every one has an accent to any one that doesnt speak the way they do. so hate to breaak it to you, but you.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh and dodged the Pittsburghese accent.
I work at a pizza shop and it is somewhat painful listening to people with a thick pittsburghese accent.

Im living with an american at the moment, shes sooo fucken annoying. loud, whiney and butts in into everyones convos. fuck off.

haha idk, I find Canadian accents just plain funny. Whenever I'm smashed at bars I try hitting on girls with a Canadian accent, its fun. half the time they like it, others think I'm mental.

hey now, dont generalize NY state to NY city. people out of the city sound nothing like citydwellers.

I definitely think some parts of the midwest have accents. I'm from Chicago suburbs, now out in CO and everyone says I have a strong accent. Same with parts of wisconsin, and the UP of michigan definitely does. Beer and bear are the same word there

I'm also from Maine and I have to agree with you. I know on some words I say things differently from other places in America but for the most part I think I pronounce things pretty well.

vowels are very nasal instead of sorry it sounds like sarry and its the opposite for British the vowels sounds very pronounced this is what i hear a canadian
