Well, if you are a good skier though, you are going to be very susceptible to injury so time spent in the gym lifting/stretching can allow you to prevent injuries and spend more time on the snow and not lying around hurt.  From that point of view, it is more fun and just logical to spend time in the gym.  I understand that lifting can be a pain in the ass though and hard to get motivated for, but after you do it for a bit it isn't so bad anymore.
