Goddamnit youre ignorant. Those "fuck ups" are usually kids who cannot afford college or rent, in which they resort to the military to cover that. If you think all soldiers enlisted because they want to participate in violence and kill enemies, then you are wrong.

You honestly have no idea what you're talking about. Where do you get any of your information from? The infantry is most definitely not made up overwhelmingly of southerners and some of the smartest guys I know in the military are Infantrymen. Plenty of stupid guys too but it's mostly just average guys from all over the country who wanted to do their part. I'm from NY, did a year of college, and my asvab score was high enough to qualify for pretty much any job the army had to offer, but why would I want to be a pog.
Also, please tell me which documentaries to watch so I can see how every infantrymen is a brainless southerner.

Fuck off. Many kids who join the military, join because they can't afford to pay for college. For example, both my parents joined the military to pay for medical school.

But seriously, the amount of coverage this is getting is a bit nauseating. Horrible as it is, why don't we give attention on shit like this (or shit that is much, much worse) when it doesn't involve a rogue solider? One soldier loses his shit, commits an atrocity, meanwhile other fucking crazies blow up markets day in and day out taking out innocents left and right and we get a little blurb on the bottom of the TV... if we're lucky. Certainly no Mike-O/Gnartron OP thread on NS. When considering the scale of what has been going on over the past decade+, this is just a small, if hardly discernible, blip. That's the way it should be, at least.

Funny. I know a lot of people who joined to serve and my military friends are some of the better educated and harder working people I know. Granted most of the ones I know are in college now on GI
While I totally agree that the media has lost interest covering in daily car bombings and suicide bombings in the Middle East, a soldier from a foreign occupying nation going batshit insane and gunning down the civilians is a little different. Senseless mass deaths caused by a terrorist group or insurgency is nothing new, the difference is that this guy had an American flag sewn on his uniform when he aimed and fired.

Just because someone isn't as educated as you and chooses to turn what they have (pride in their country) into something good you are going to pick out their flaws? Regardless of the reason they join the military they protect you. You need to grow up and realize that these men and woman take on whatever task they are told no matter what they are told. I said from personal experience the people I know (every last one) that has joined the military were fuck ups, had run ins with our police, have gotten into drugs, and practically thrown their lives away. I live in a well educated part of my state, and these kids threw their education away to party then joined the military when they realized that they fucked up any chance of getting into college. Did I ever say that was a bad thing? No. So shut the fuck up. Half my family is in the fucking military, luckily all of them have survived theirs tours of duty but they have told me fucked up shit they saw or have been a part of. Dont act like I dont give two shits about the people fighting over sees because I do.

and thank you. One of my former best friends was one of these fuck ups. He wasted his highschool education but joined the military to, like you said, get his life in order. I never said that joining was a bad thing because you fucked up in high school.

Which they joined for one reason or another. Many do not stay like that. I will say many because i know there are fucked up minds in the military and i don't want to generalize. They build these people's character and completely change them. You cannot bad talk these men that when they are in the military getting their lives together, at the same time the risk their lives.

You can empathize without excusing the moral reality of what he did. We're all exposed to constant propaganda about the virtue of the military. I used to bash them because I saw them as paid killers, but most of them genuinely want to do good. That guy could have gone into the military with purely good intentions and snapped under the stress of the brutal situation he was in. What he did was evil, and I believe we should do everything we can to prevent violence. And that begins with understanding where it comes from. Put that anger to good use!

tragedies get higher ratings than human interest stories. The news doesn't show the actions of every soldier, only the most radical.
I'm saddened to hear that the soldier responsible is from joint base lewis-mcchord-- very close to where I live-- I don't want the actions of this one soldier to reflect on the thousands of good soldiers we have here. There are a few personality types that are more prone to joining the forces--unfortunately, one of them is violent-- occasionally to the point of mental illness.
I think I heard on the radio this morning that this guy was on his 4th or 5th tour of duty-- he went insane. We need to respect our soldiers and protect them, not throw them to the wolves. The US should let him be tried in Afghanistan by their court. He left the base and killed children and women on his own. It had nothing to do with the military. The US having jurisdiction over military personnel no matter what is BULLSHIT. The guy left and killed a bunch of people because he went nuts. Show the people some respect, let them try him and then fucking leave the hell hole. We dont need to be there, we have no business. We are wasting money, protect our own boarders not other peoples.

I might have some critical sentiments about US policies in other threads, but I haven't started any 'fucked up occurence' threads about the US or the US Army, other than the Google/Patriot Act thread which to me, and many others, was pretty damn relevant.
You have to look beyond the blatant hypocrisy and try to see what this is all about.

Can't afford college and after military service you get the GI Bill.
Who else is hiring right now?
A lot of guys get specialized training/schooling for things like mechanic work or healthcare that they can use in civilian life
Most guys that join the military, hell, the majority, aren't part of the regular foot soldiers and are not sitting on the front lines with a gun shooting at people.
