Unpopular opinion thread skier's edition

Lots of skiers ski for the wrong reason and you can see it in their clips/edits

Also, people who quit skiing as they grow up should be missed but not necessarily dissed. Taking a season off was the best thing I ever did

I feel bad for people who get burnt out on a sport they did as a kid. I did in a sport and know many others. The competitive environment isn’t good for enjoyment.

Skiing down a set of stairs isnt a trick and is stupid

Neither is urban straight air drops. I swear to god, watching kids try to swag out a 6 foot drop with a safety is too much. Congrats, you can ski properly

catching transition on stairs can be cool and I would consider being a trick. Just skiing down stairs I would say is more friends just dicking around and having fun doing dumb stuff so I am all good with that as well, but I would agree that it isn't a trick.

If you’re doing straight airs in the street it better be really big or really steezy in some unique way

Street parts where they ski a lot on concrete and „off snow“ are fucking stupid. Dont wanna see you sliding down a roof on your skis

nah street videos are much more interesting when there's a variety of spots and not just rails. Roof drops can be very cool. A good example is the one in the daycare video.

But of course Patrol Unionization is getting taken-over by rich kid ski influencers. And it don't mean shit either because the holding companies won't recognize the votes to win. But keep bragging I guess? Some of us are tired of paying out-of-pocket to seek out further education and seeing people fucked-up on the hill.

Finally a real hot take that I disagree with wholeheartedly. Too many popular opinions in here

Hahaha i knew that was coming and i know not a lot of people feel the same. I just enjoy skiing on snow a lot more. Still big respect to the street guys tho

just realized this - another reason why skis are superior to snowboards is because when they stop/slow down, they allow you to stay in one lane. pizza, hockey slide both keep your same lane of travel and you are not endangering anyone else.

snowboarding on the other hand often causes the boarder to move about the trail, which could be dangerous and is also not steezy.

you might be saying "oh yeah well that's just for beginners, beginner skiers take up space when stopping too", but this thought was prompted by the average crowd at PC? thread that was just posted. look at all the skiers, able to slow down without changing course of direction, while the snowboarders (who are obviously not beginners and most likely pretty good), need to take up a few more feet of width. in crowded scenarios like that it's just weak.

i'm baffled why anyone would think snowboarding is superior to skiing in any way (except safety in regards to crashing -your feet won't be trashing around). not a style or coolness observation.

I find it hilarious that so many newcomers to snowsports pick snowboarding despite it being much harder to get around on. Fine by me though!

My 154cm snowboard takes up a lot less space when I stop than my 186cm ski's. Anyone who can actually snowboard can rotate from the fall line to a heel side stop without turning.

I feel personally attacked. I just rotate through my collection of XL Tommy Bahama's all spring

Skiing trading cards is the most confusing skiing related product to me. I don't have anything against it, but I don't understand why anyone would pay a dime for that. Even if I got a pack for free I would still just put them in the recycling bin, just feels like junk.

You just reminded me I pulled a Nico Porteous way before he was the sickest skier alive

It's a hot take but it's true. Snowboarding has surf and skate originations and was becoming popular in a time where skiing was starting to become only a thing your parents did on vacation and when skiing started to truly become a rich person's sport. We would all be snowboarders had dudes like JF Cusson, Auclair, all the OGs of freeskiing that wanted to say "fuck you" to competitive mogul skiing never decided to start bending their tails in their garages and getting kicked out of snowboard parks

Terrain parks literally also were invented by snowboarders so give credit where it's due. No disrespect to the pioneers of extreme/Freeride and freestyle/moguls, but freeskiing can owe snowboarding a lot of credit for influence.

Skiing has a lot cooler history. Vikings, Stone age asians, Sámi people and so much more.

That is very true. Skiers ran so snowboarders could walk, but in terms of the modern age of freeskiing, we all wanted to be like that subconciously.
