Unpopular opinion thread skier's edition

Haha nice, when I wrote that up I thought it made more sense...I'll add more background info, alright so even though I don't use poles it isn't because of the shit "trend" or for style reasons since I (like many others that decide to not use poles) don't particularly have style.

The real reason behind why I specifically choose not to use poles isnt by my desire to be "new wave" to be "cool" or because it's a "trend" but because I'm not really into injuring myself in a way that could have been prevented by not using poles: such as someone I know who broke his nose with his pole when he ate shit doing a Lincoln loop. I myself have also sprained my thumb cause I had pole straps (yeah I'm a fucking idiot I know) and this one girl in my class who tore a ligament in her hand because of her pole.

To resume, the correlation between hating on poles because the style sucks for 90% of people who do it and my friend who broke his nose with poles is the following: bringing up how the no pole style is bad for the 90% is a true opinion, however even though I realize that my style fucking sucks without poles I continue to choose not to use them while skiing park because of the injuries I've witnessed caused by them including the one you threw shade at me for not correlating with the previous point.

My style sucks without poles and I know this, not using poles is a bad style for the majority, I work at having better style without poles every day, injuries suck, pole related injuries suck too, I dont use poles.

My unpopular opinion:

-Rails Suck.

-The 1% of snowboarders that know how to rip are legit af.

-I think ON3P is over hyped.

-528153xl clothes only fit 1 or 2 skiers, like Dollo, the rest look like retards.

-Chairlift bar always down.

-Drinking a beer is fine, drinking the whole mountain is not a decision that makes you look cool.

-Those tricks when you need ultra slow-mo and 17 repetitions to see what the skier does are shit.

-Playing music while you ski is kinda funny.

Your girl's panties are 50% wetter when i'm ripping under the lift. I know it, you know it, and your GF def knows it.

Timberline winters and palmer summers are full of posers, In the winter everything may as well be a green run even the tree runs aren’t all that. Boneyard is Alright. Only thing that Tline wins at are the parks but even in the parks there are poser suburban kids everywhere.

I have to say idgaf if someone uses poles or not in the park; that's their preference. Right on! But having poles on steep slopes is a necessity and can be used for other things such as self arresting. I prefer poles in all instances.

As for injuries from poles, the way to avoid that is to not keep your hands in the straps. The downside to that is if you get your poles stuck in snow and if you let go, they don't follow you since they're no longer on your wrist.....and you look like a total Jerry having to hike back for them (been there, done that).

My take: if you're in the park, don't use the pole straps or don't use poles. If you're elsewhere on the mountain, use the straps. I like to wrap the straps around my palm, but above my thumb so if they do get all twisted up, I can just let go. Plus wrapping the straps like that makes it easy to take off and self arrest (I've done it. Piece of cake. I probably couldn't if it was around my wrist. And if I was just holding the poles, no straps, I would have definitely lost them when falling.)

Hundreds of hashtags to get more likes on your social media is stupid.

Same with pros who pay for bots that follow/unfollow me a couple times a week.

For real though, the follow/unfollow bots and the auto-commenting are so obvious and unprofessional. I use hashtags, mostly for comedic effts, but i dont really have a problem with them in general. Maybe a trollin episode is in order....?

A trollin episode is most definitely in order. You need to callout Keirnan Fagan or something hahaha.

Anyway, some guy posted a pic of his tongue bitten in half from skiing. I think it was Joystick or Virtika, but they auto commented a thumbs up or something.. it was pretty funny.

Either you're extremely lucky or you don't hit rails the same way most people do. I think a lot of my cracks were from mount hood. The rails get hot there from the sun beating down and their challenge rails are long as hell. Edge cracks happen from the edges heating up from friction on the rail and then hitting the cold snow immediately.

I really wish all ski companies weren't lazy chumps that think steel is good enough for edges (because it's not). Ski ompanies need to get off their lazy ass and hire a materials science guy on their R&D team to figure out a something for edges that isn't so sensitive to rapid changes in temperature.

BILL BILL BILL BILL

-People who wear jerseys over their ski jackets look stupid as fuck. Sorry not sorry you look dumb. You probably only bought that jersey because you think it looks hood. We all know you don't like the Yankees or Tampa Ray's....be honest.

-I think skiing drunk or high is rediculously stupid and reckless (bring on the hate replies). Go for it, but you won't see me doing it. Are you trying to get an injury?

-People at Killington are mostly douchebags.

yep, YEP, no idea.

The Bunch's Interpretation movie was really disappointing, t I wish there wasn't 18 minutes of artsy filming before watching only two segments where most of the prime shots were already posted on instagram. I wanted more skiing.

This may be more of a ski racing thing, but parents who send their kids to ski academies and pay a shitload of money because they think their kid is going to the Olympics annoys me. There's nothing wrong with being on a team for whatever type of skiing, but I know kids who would rather go to a normal school and have fun skiing on fridays and the weekends than get dragged into training 7 days a week

Yeah, pretty crazy that parents are willing to dish out $70k+ just for their kid to ski race and get a shitty education. Ski academies suck unless you're actually the next Ted Ligety.

Also funny how many of these ski academies now have park skiing programs. What are you going to do with that? It won't help you get into college, considering no schools recruit park skiers. You're also sure as hell not going to make any money from it either. Crazy how rich, highly educated parents can be so fucking stupid.

totally agree. If your teenager has a legitimate shot at being a D1 ski racer I get it, but only if they r already being recruited. In terms of park ur right, thats not gonna help a kid get into college (or at least the vast vast majority of them)

I've heard of some really terrible injuries happening on SKIS as well. I would suggest tossing those too and pick up a new hobby like knitting

I've heard some terrible injuries happen from breathing, you should probably just stop that as well. Breathing has a 100% chance of death eventually I've heard.

agreed. I love the bunch too, finess is one of my favourite ski films ever but the ratio of b-roll (which was still incredibly well shot I will add) to skiing shots just wasn't that great in the first half. If the whole movie was like everything after the start of LSM's segment I would have enjoyed it more imo.

2 on continuing 2 is a terrible looking trick even when performed perfectly with mad style. Also think Daniel Hanka is way over hyped and im not a fan of his quadruple shifty shit

Don't you talk about Hanka like that

Freestyle skiing's community is a major disappointment compared to other action sports in the content that they create. It almost seems like the majority of skiing companies (actual ski companies as well publications like newschoolers & freeskier) just don't give a shit/ don't put any effort in to being influential or making content that they are proud of. Other sports have thriving teams that produce amazing video content and there is tons of creativity and innovation. Skiing has 2, maybe 3, groups of actually motivated people that produce consistent, quality content (HG Skis, The Bunch...) I don't mean to sound like that guy "Why can't skiing be more like skateboarding?", but seriously, its pretty disappointing seeing so much talent with little to no direction or desire to inspire and influence the culture.

Drone shots are fucking dumb 90% of the time.

if they can get a drone to follow someone shredding through a sweet forest that would be cool. But using it to get a directly above camera angle is so dumb, its literally the most boring and least interesting angle you can get of someone skiing

13873490:hot.pocket said:
That one shot in Numinous where the drone was against the mountain below the skier is in the 10%.

Everything in Numinous was in the 10%. Best drone footage ive ever seen by far.
