Unpopular opinion thread skier's edition

I mean, he leans into the mystique a little sometimes but he's also pretty old for a pro freeskier at this point. In his main days he was as prolific as anyone, full segments and comp results, and he's been in front of the lens for more than 20 years. People don't think candide is a ski god due to a small sample size, that's for sure

also totally unrelated but you're no longer invited to my birthday party

for sure, I've been a fan since his ski movie III segment. Back then he dropped tons of content, made his own videos which were dope af, had his own invitationals etc. He really did a lot more to give back to the ski community then than he does now. Just wish he would cut it out with the overly mysterious vibe and do some interviews and idk drop more than 3 clips a year?

I’m getting a little sus about some of his videos lately. If you watch closely, some of the movements look really awkward almost like CGI

CONSPIRACY: Candide died and the creature we all think is him is really an advanced ai cyborg that is testing the cutting edge of robot technology via extreme sports

Jackets intended for skiing look stupid no exceptions

The fact that Vishnu and Jet are considered edgy says a lot about how lame skiing is

Skis can be too long, really long skis look just as dumb as really short skis

Steve Stepp was never funny

If your video is longer than 40 minutes I'm not watching it

ON3P is played out

Thug era skiing sucked

vishnu and jet were never considered edgy, they're hipster and aloof.

skis back in the thug era were actually "edgy"

Yeah I don’t think they are either but I see a lot of people on here saying otherwise

The thug era is just as cringe too tbh but our sport grew.. Skiings still got a heavy "Country Club Kids" vibe in it and it always has had it.

Alright I got some more

Strictly videos are boring (the skiing is good but I just can't sit through the videos)

The mushroom Reckoners are some of the ugliest graphics I've ever seen, and so are all of the Bent Chetlers ever

If Henrik was a mid-tier pro he would be seen as extremely cringe

Objectively bad style can be really cool in some situations

thug era was cool and cringe at the same time, it was cool that we were being hip and edgy but it was cringy that we were white boys doing a rich white boy sport and trying to be "hood"

i got a few.

rails look dumb most of the time

big backflips 3s and 1s are the best looking tricks there are.

i much prefer a simple edit with good tunes less park (but still some) and just nice clean simple stuff

what does this even mean? are their skis like, bad now??

I don't have any opinion on the quality of the actual skis since I've never tried them. I don't think ON3P is wack, they're just not as cool as a lot of people think. For every 1 good skier riding them there's 5 TGR dads and 5 prepubescent hypebeasts. They're just another brand to me. Plus half their team, which was a lot of my favorite skiers, left. I don't know if ON3P dropped them or if they just decided to leave themselves, but either way it shows that ON3P isn't what it used to be. And their graphic have gotten a lot worse recently.

I know that sounds gatekeepy and doesn't really make sense but those are my thoughts on ON3P

ok word I agree with pretty much all of that. The skis are def excellent quality, I've been seeing people froth over them on here for years and I finally got a pair last season and they lived up to the hype for sure. I wouldn't read too much into the team thing, they are a small company so they can't pay their riders very much so sometimes guys just gotta move on, saying that they aren't what they used to be is over interpreting I think, but at the same time you gotta support the companies that support the skiers you like.

and yeah as far as wack people riding them goes - that will happen to every company that is even remotely successful. I vividly remember pulling up to sunday river 2 seasons ago in the fall and a bunch of teenagers hopped out of daddy's range rover, track pants on and new vishnus in hand. Those same kids are probably the ones claiming that posers "ruined" vishnu now, guess they will have to buy jetskis this season lmao

I said I'M FINE

no I hear you, but I don't blame any skiers for milking it, cashing out, taking it easy, whatever, especially him. it can be such a brutal career without a guaranteed payout, and he's given the sport so much. Plus he's put us on normal people's radar a little with his recent (ish) YouTube videos etc

not arguing, just chatting. I do wish he'd put out a full segment of the kind of big mtn charging he was doing in Few Words (the current-at-the-time footage), that shit just crushed

Lol not trying to roast you or anything I just prefer the older graphics to the 2021s. Mostly just the Magnus and Jeffrey didn't look like ON3Ps to me, I think the Woodsman and Wrenegade were really cool. Mixed feelings on the 2022s I've seen so far. Not that you should give a shit what some random kid on Newschoolers thinks obviously you're doing fine

TGR gets hated on but I’ve perused some of the forums and honestly don’t think it’s that bad. However, I have never interacted with anyone on there.

They also have some good fucking deals and daddy loves a deal ?

I'm gonna call being mentioned in the same sentence as Benchetler a win.

And always interesting to hear another perspective on my work.

Top 100 influential skiers; Ankilla is on the list. There will be some sort of run, park, rail, named after him at Keystone in the future. Maybe even top 50. Seriously. Think about it.

Lmao I’m assuming this a a troll attempt or maybe I’m wrong and it’s just a terrible take.

I didn’t come to troll. OP wanted an unpopular opinion so I laid out the facts as I know them.

Skinny pants look good everybody just bandwagon hates on them

Pivots are not worth the price

Color changing was the worst Vishnu graphic this year

Dude you have a Slint icon and you’re hating on the indie darling brand…so predictable. Just admit they’re not “underground” enough for you and keep it pushing.

their skis are legitimately phenomenal.

lmao I just got called out hard, might change my icon again because it does makes me seem like even more of a hating douche than I already am

My two skis right now are Factions and Fischers so I don't really care about being "underground" I'm just not a huge fan of ON3P

@skicompanies stop claiming your skis are tougher or more durable or god forbid "bombproof" because they're not.

I thought my ON3P Magnuses would be durable because they're built pretty beefy. I've been on them for maybe 15 days, got 9 edge cracks and the sidewall is opening up. straight up the least durable ski I've owned so far. Kind of pissed that I blew $550 on a pair of skis that might get me to January if I'm lucky.

Or maybe I should just quit skiing rails and stick to groomers.

You're lowkey scaring me saying that since I just bought some on3ps and only ski rails

Proper edge detuning with a file and gummy stone goes a long way. You gotta spend an hour if you want to double you ski’s lifetime. Make them round underfoot while still keeping as much of the edge material on as you can. Finish with a hard gummy stone rub.

I didn’t have the chance to detune them properly before riding. I did a little bit, but not enough. It was my fault.

Hopefully someday a ski company will be able to find a more friction resistant steel to use for edge material. Until then, rails will always win in the long run.

I honestly hope this isn’t an unpopular opinion but Child Labor is the worst fucking name for a ski crew. The skiers in it are all dope too, just the name is so tone deaf. It reminds me of the ski crew Young Money Retarded from back in the day, just the worst branding imaginable

Mangus come super detuned. Did you get yours without a detune?

I agree and same goes for Vishnu honestly, if they switched the name to just "V" I would be stoked

Child labor is a dope name. Plus if you own some of the merch it’s hilarious getting weird looks from people

one i've been thinking for a while:

doing swervy tip tappy unorthodox shit does not automatically make you fucking creative. If you go out in the park or streets with the mindset of doing those kinds of tricks, it is really not hard to come up with a bunch of new wave type stuff you could do at any given spot.

Excessively wide pants and a super tight small vest, sweatshirt, jacket etc and a beanie needs to go mofos be looking like bowling pins

Those were the 2017 Magnuses I had, that was before they had the factory detune. It would still be a got idea to round off the bevel between the side of the edge and the bottom, finishing with a gummy stone. The bevel just takes out most of the work you need to do.

It's also very important to routinely gummy stone your edges through the season. But I can never remember to do that haha

LMAO "YOUNG MONEY RETARDED"

i don't think even rap groups or labels would use the word "retarded" in their name, ever

can't believe that used to exist that's so fucking funny

this isn’t the first time I’ve heard this and I would like to address it.

There is a fine line between appreciation and appropriation, and I think the difference is that one is as respectful and understanding as possible of the culture the material is being taken from, and one is not.

For example, if the brand was called Vishnu, used imagery of the Hindu deity in question and the logo was a cow (sacred symbol) that would be flagrantly disrespectful of the culture being borrowed from.

I never have, and won’t, represent the brand that way. I appreciate what the god Vishnu represents in the Hindu religion (from the research I have done) and still think it represents the brand’s vision seven years later. There is something inherently powerful about religious words and imagery, regardless of which religion I choose to take from. And I take from multiple, regularly.

Believe it or not, I have spoken to a fair amount of Hindu people about their thoughts on the matter in my time as an Uber driver in Salt Lake and all of them have expressed similar opinions: as long as the imagery/material used doesn’t promote something forbidden in the culture, none of the people I talked to (anecdotal data) thought the name of the brand was inappropriate or disrespectful. A couple of them mentioned a beer brand called Brahma (general term for god) that they aren’t down with because alcohol is strictly forbidden in most (all?) Hindu cultures.

I realize my last paragraph is the near equivalent to someone who is accused of being racist saying “I have black friends” but in this case I think the point stands. I have talked to real life Hindu people about appropriation concerns and thus far none have seemed bothered by it. To the contrary, most of them thought it was cool that a random white bro in Utah knew about their culture.

When you add the fact that Vishnu is a common first name in India, along the same lines as Jesús or Maria José in Latin countries, I think I can dodge cancellation this time.

I’ll save my thoughts on Child Labor for another post if needed but suffice to say, people have no problem wearing Nikes made by modern indentured slaves in Vietnam or using their iPhone manufactured at Foxconn where people jump out of the windows mid shift. I think the name Child Labor reminds people of the world we really live in and that’s a good thing overall, despite the admitted edginess.
