University of Utah or University of Colorado, Boulder?

Hello NS,

I need help deciding what school I should attend fall 2013. I have been accepted into the University of Colorado, Boulder and the University of Utah. I have been thinking of both schools a lot in my head and I can't figure out what school I should attend.

I'm the average kid, I like skiing (mainly park), parties and outdoor activities (in that order). I feel I will get an insane amount of skiing in Utah, but all of the reviews I have read they say that the night life is non existent. In Boulder I feel I will be able to ski in the weekends and I have heard the night life there is insane. So basically my impression is Utah = an insane amount of skiing and no partying and Boulder = skiing in weekends and an insane amount of parties.

Is there anybody that is attending Utah or Boulder that could help me pick? What are your experiences with the different schools you guys are attending?

Thanks so much!

(I am Norwegian, sorry if the english sucks)

My sin has been accepted at Boulder and U of U as well, but there's no question it will be Utah IF he chooses to go out of state. We loved the campus and the high level of academics the school had to offer. Great campus vibe and dorms. Close proximity to numerous ski resorts. Easy access/numerous flights to the airport. And we just love Utah. But there again, my sons not a big partier, so being a party school was not an issue.

Passing ones.

One University is a half hour away from multiple resorts ranging from great park skiing to the best pow skiing and the other is a place where ski careers go to die. If you have to ask which one you should attend then maybe Boulder is for you, hahahahahahaha.

neither of them are hard to get into, U of U has like a 3.5 average gpa for those accepted, with decent SAT scores, which they only take the reading/mathematics portion of. I think the average was like a 1100 or something, which for 2 cumulative SAT scores isn't actually all that high.

What are you going for? My friend (who's a filmer for Stept) goes to Boulder for film and he says their film program is great

I dunno if I'd consist their film program "great".

Op boulder is a great school but far from skiing while Utah is a great place too, plenty of partying goes on. You put skiing first on your list so I'd say come to Utah.

Boulder - Spoiled rich white kids that love drugs (coke) control the party scene on the hill. Plan on tiring 2hr+ trips up to the mountains and long lift lines. If you want to party, hike the park, and live in a very congested area go to Boulder.

If you want to maximize your skiing go to U of U.

boulder is the shit go there. utah is fun but boulder has the raddest music scene in the country and chron is legal. in utah you can still get fucked pretty hard even for a gram.

I love how NS has become the official marketing site for U of U...

I went to CU Boulder and have nothing bad to say about it. Everyone that goes there parties hard but are also very active in the outdoors. If you are just trying to ski may not be the best place, however I skied 4 days a week when I went their in the Architecture program which has a large work load. Prioritize and you can do whatever you want.

a little advice, 90% of newschoolers is made up of a 15 and under crowd. you will get no where with this thread because 90% of the people on here have no idea how to differentiate these to schools other than which state they are in.

as a college grad, the answer is clear, boulder. its a better school academically. so if you can afford it and have the grades, go there.

Anyone who says night life at U of U is non exsistant hasnt been here. Now it is not as buck as boulder by any means but you can find a party thursday-saturday most weekends. And the skiing is so much closer and easier.

1 1/2 to 2 hour drive versus less than 30 minutes up to PC and even less than that going to LCC/BCC. Pick your poison.

And to anyone saying boulder because of the 3.2 beer in utah, you can go fuck yourself.

I went to the U, and it always seemed to me like social life there is (generally) split into two main groups: Mormons who don't party, and skier kids who do. I will say that the party scene does tend to die down a bit in the winter because people kinda want to get up early to ski, but there will still almost always be something going on. Fall, spring, and summer get more wild. The desert parties are really fun, too. Unless you have no friends I honestly wouldn't worry about the party scene too much. It's not BYU after all.

And if you go to the U you'll be able to ski/hike/etc most every day if you want to, unless your class schedule is absolutely insane. The mountains here are waaaayyyy closer than in Boulder.

You're really going to try and say that boulder isn't full of a bunch of spoiled rich kids who party hard?

Boulder is a better school academically (for engineering at least and recognizable) but it's also a party school through and through.

Skiing is literally 2 times better at U of U.

Shit, I'd almost rather go to UNR than Boulder.

Utah is chyll. Way cheaper too. 30 minutes away from ill skiing (Boulder is ~2 hours). Plenty of partying can be done at Utah if you want. Not as prominent as in Boulder, but there's plenty of sick parties in SLC contrary to popular belief.

Depends on the edit. Danny lives in boulder so a lot of the parties in edits are from boulder but I film at a lot of edits here. The most recent trailer had parties from U of U

NYU, USC, UCLA, columbia chicago, to name a few. when it comes to film programs, there are the top 10 schools and then every other big schools film program isn't anything special.

Im not saying you wont learn anything getting a film degree at CU but no one is gonna give a shit you got a film degree at CU.

Go to University of British Columbia; shred way harder, party legally and get a better education than Boulder or Utah. Check out some of the UBC Freeride or UBC ski and Board stuff to see what its like.

Come to Utah and you get to hang out with Dan, which I'm still not sure if it's a good or bad thing

UU and Boulder are my two top choices as well and I can tell you that I'm aiming more towards Boulder. I got to spend some quality time to visit CO and see what it's like this past winter. I fell in love it with and I'm doing everything i can to at least move out to CO from Big Bear. I grew up in a small and quiet mountain town and I'm just looking for a place where i can keep going big in skiing, be surrounded by a more outdoor motivated kind of community, and be in a place where it's not a such a sausage fest. Utah is sick with some of the best skiing i've experienced and SLC is super close to everything. However, the weird Utah laws, some of the people, and the inversion layer that happens once a year in winter kind of steered me more towards CO.

Yeah it's an expression that you used seriously to tell OP not to ask for college advice on newschoolers which is just plain stupid.

Didn't read any posts so forgive me if there's repetition. I am just finishing up my freshman year at CU. It's pretty easy to get a day off or two during the week if you take some time to schedule your classes accordingly. I had tues/thurs off and was able to make it up usually at least 2 times a week. It also helps a lot if you have a car or know someone who does. Weekday ski days are the best and then you can party on the weekend (if you're into that nonsense).

Go to CU, theres countless outdoors activities and the education isn't so bad either.

I live in Utah and am a junior in high school and Ive been considering the same two schools

but once i figured out boulder is 45k I laughed that thought away. Boulder is the most expensive public school in the nation

i most likely go to the U, as everyone said the mountains there are so damn far away. Living so close to the mountains in UTah it just seems so unrealistic to get at least 3 days of skiing in a week when you have to drive 1.5/ish hours to get to the mountain in CO. And (i could be wrong) the stept crew doesn't even go to school during the winter and spends most of their time out of the state hitting rails and when they are there, they are hitting rails in Boulder. So if you think "oh the stept guys ski a lot and they go to boulder" they're doing it much differently than everyone else.

But Ive heard there is some serious babes at boulder, so thats something you should heavily consider when making your choice

gotta go with the U, pretty much to avoid all the East coast transplants who drive Porsche Cayenne's but they're "like totally Earth friendly mountain people" because they go to school Boulder

do you like ....marijuana, booze, liberals, slutty girls, growing music scene, douchy "lax broish" guys?. CU

do you like.....deep snow, close resorts, no alcohol, no marijuana, average girls, normans, less "in your face, lets be fucking stupid and arrogant because were drunk and in collage" dudes? UU

I spent the first 18 years of my life living in Park City, Utah (20 minutes from the U) and am now in my 19th year as a Fresman at CU Boulder. I have no doubt in my mind that I made the right decision, but I'm slightly biased because I didn't want to end up in the same place as 50% of my high school. If you are to come to Boulder, here are my suggestions.

*Join the Freestyle Ski Team. There's lots of cool people on it and if you ever looking to go up whether it be a week day or weekend, you can catch a ride with some good park skiers at that.

*Try to bring a car. Boulder is fun, but it's nice to get to Denver every once in a while and getting to the mountains is 10000x easier with your own car (plus, people pay for your gas if you drive rather that you paying for people's gas)

*Live in a general dorm. Don't make the mistake I did and go to some RAP or engineering dorm, live in a general dorm (Willard, Hallett, Libby, Sewell...). You'll meet a lot more normal people that are looking to have fun, and if you're not dumb, you can avoid the (previously stated) copious amounts of coke heads. Plus, just an opinion on my part (however, shared with many of my friends from the U of U), the girls here are much, much hotter. Just gotta do your best to avoid some of the dumb sorority ones (not a hard task at all).

*Be prepared to have a great time. Boulder is a fun ass place whether your among the thousands outside on campus on a friday afternoon enjoying the sunny weather or going out at night, there's never a stop in good times.

The U is obviously a great second choice (I've spent plenty of time hanging with my friends that go there). The partying is a little harder to come by (probably an under exaggeration, it's just not quite like Boulder), but it comes with a great silver lining in that the skiing is much closer, slightly less crowded, and there are more mountains. I'm not going to lie however, even after skiing Park City for 18 years, Breck park immediately has become my favorite park out there and I would rather put in the extra hour of driving as its just that much fun. Plus the Epic Pass is super cheap and gives you access to all the mountains you could ever want to ski.

Hope this helped, I went through the same dilemma last year myself and know I made the right choice after all.

If you want to ski any pow the choice is easy. Summit county's terrain is shit. Also in boulder you will spend 1/4th of your waking hours driving every ski day.

The drive might be like 3x as much to ski in colorado but Boulder is just a really sweet place to live.

keep in mind Eldora mtn resort (which is on the same pass as key and breck) is a quick 35 minutes up the Boulder canyon. theres never traffic, the powder days are epic, and they're working to build their park (hopefully with the gazillions of dollars vail must have given them to hop on the epic pass). not to mention Nederland is the single most pot friendly town in the entire country. and to top it off theres an RTD bus that goes straight to the base every other hour. you can wake up on a sunday at 9 :15 and be like "i feel like skiing today", just take a quick zip down the hill to the station on your bike, hop on the bus and be clicked in and on the chair by 11 with virtually no expenses and a 9/10 chance of getting stoned with your newfound pothead skier buddy. it gets a bad rap because of its comparison to the summit stage but i have had some damn good times up at Eldo.

If you ski at the U of U, you can find plenty of people to party with...I went to visit my cousin who goes to the U a couple times last year, we were out every night, it wasn't hard to find parties at all. He told me it's a bit slower during the ski season, there's still parties to be found, but the rest of the year it's easy to find places to go.

I know nothing about CU Boulder...other than it's more expensive and further from places to ski.

CU is unquestionably the better school. Utah is much closer to skiing. Utah has better snow than Colorado. CU has the better basketball team. Utah has the better football team. Utah has a very large mormon population. Marijuana is legal in Colorado.

Just some things to think about.

i got in to both with a 3.1gpa and a 36 ACT score.

I live in Colorado, and the party scene in Boulder is better. However it can get annoying. The skiing in Utah is closer, but not necessarily better. Especially with park, youll get more options in Colorado, its just a bit more of a drive.

Id go with boulder.
