so like what kind of grades do you need to get in, i am just curious cause i just wnat to see if i even have a chance in getting in, ha. i got a 1090 on my SATs the first and only time i took them, so hopefully they will go up but my scores not horrible. from what i have researched it seems kind of hard to get in to, they take about half the applicants, but my college couseler said they kinda like americans just for the fact that america is known for good school so canadian schools lose alot of kids to american schools, yea no idea. whats your general oppion of how competitive the school is?

Actually, we only take American applicants because they aren't locals. American schools are actually lower-grade than ours in terms of quality of education and student test avg. I don't know about SAT average requirement, because we don't use that here. Basically, arts admission avg is about 74% for kids coming out of gr 12, commerce is more like 90%. Sciences is somewhere in the low 80s, I believe. Could be wrong. None of the faculties are easy, but it is a high-ranked school worldwide. If you want a slightly easier time and are willing to sacrifice faculty quality, go to SFU. One step down from that is Langara.

yea, depending on the program, UBC is really competitive. of course my brother got in easy because he's a crazy overacheiver (and i hate him for it). he got over %100 final grades in both calculus/math 12 and physics 12. crazy bastard

i want to goto a good school, thats very important to me, i like challenges. i want to do whatever is best for me, and whatever will help me succeed more in life.

how is the art program, i am prolly going into business but i would love to get into art aswell. i want to get into fashion so i am getting a business major so that after college i can work in the fashion world even though i won't be designing it.

basically all you gotta do is apply early and make sure your have great scores. just like any other school. i think international students pay extra though (yes, you would count as an international student)

^You can't get over 100%. And no one in the history of the province had gotten 100% on the Calc final. SBB, the arts program has a good variety of courses, as well as some excellent profs. What's more, some of the better ones even teach first and second year courses once in a while. However, most are concentrated in the higher level courses. Also, first year english is a total joke, because it's a requirement for every faculty. I'd ski first year poli sci unless you're taking Canadian politics (you're American, so I kinda doubt you will); 2nd year poli courses don't have prereqs usually. However, 1st year phil is a great course. When you're signing up for courses, go to Ratemyprofessors.com to get an idea of how the course will be.

he didn't get 100% in the final, something in the 90s... but his overall score was %100... it WOULD have been over %100 if it was allowed, because he did all the bonus work and stuff

Oh, and if you're going into commerce (business is called commerce here)... good luck. That's the toughest program to get into, by a mile. 90% admission avg. Also, their tuition is almost double that of the Arts faculty.

wow good idea on the ratemypro thing, cause my counseler was like you have to look into how much the professor knows about the field, like because it is such a huge school with so many majors you have to see how many professors teach certain things, like how well a professor knows a feild or if hes teaching like 5 different majors and just knows a lil bit about each one. if that makes sence

Pcanuck, the canadian education system does not allow for any score higher than 100% to be recorded at any time. Even during the year. I had 103 and 107 in a couple of classes, and they came out on my transcript as 100s.

If you want to go to a good buisness school there are a number of better ones in the US and you wont have to pay out of state/ country fees.

here is a ranking of the top 30 MBA programs. i gurantee some of these are difficult to get into if thats what your looking for in a school

Go for it though. UBC is awesome. i don't go there, but when i visit my brother it's a wicked place. you could live there without ever leaving the campus, it's got stores and restaurants and everything.... it's definately a great school.

SBB: That's especially important in the sci faculty. In arts, they;re very well organized, and the subject matter helps. If they have a young, specialist prof teaching poetry, their speciality is poetry. If they have an emeritus teaching Shakespeare, well, he mayu not specialize in it, but over the 40 years he's been a prof he'll certainly have gained a lot of expertise in it. However, in sciences, some profs teach outside of their speciality in first year.

i really want to goto a canadian school, i am applying to CU boulder and some other schools to, if i wanted a good business school here in the states i would stay in ohio, but i really don't want to do that. also tuition is actually not that bad like the difference because i am out of the country because of the exchange rate. that and the tuition cost isn't a problem at the moment

That list for intl is a bit off... Queens has a respected business program, but it's extremely expensive and the faculty is a bit suspect in some areas. U of T would probably be good... except it's in Toronto... ugh.

what is a good site to find rankings of schools in different fields, like where did you get that list a while back JD?

That was an intl survey. They haven't done another one since. I have a hard copy still, if you want me to look up a particular school... only other place I can think of is those Yale and harvard reports, but those are absolute bullshit... just the schools trying to make themselves look good. There's very little actual research going into them.

this whole college search sucks, and it doens't help that my parents want me to goto a SMALL liberal arts school so i won't 'get lost in the system' cause i want to goto a big school.

also i have found that the class sizes are pretty small at UBC like 17:1 ratio students to professors, is this about right? are the classes pretty small?

No, that's pretty far off. Class sizes range, but a small class would be like 25 students. I have a couple that are over 300. They wouldn't run a course if it had under 20 students. Average is probably 50-70 in a class... but it depends which department. English is usually 25-45, Poli usually ranges from 100-250.

I think to get into sciences they revised the needed average to 89% now so if commerce has gone up too well I hope you did your homework and behaved through high school good luck tho.

some classes are that small, like foreign language classes, but most lecture classes are 100+. and if you get into commerce your second year, because you dont stand a chance getting straight in, be prepared to sacrifice your life for it. they're absolutely heartless and they expect that all of your time is dedicated to your commerce studies... and outside of them you might get to take one other class per semester. but from second year on... prepare for some misery... unless your particuylarly fond of libraries, but with a 1090 SAT score i would guess that youre not.

yea i have a 3.0 gpa but thats like a 3.2 at other schools cause i goto the 9th best public school in the country. also my gpa is low because of my freshmen year and the classes i was taking and how i wasn't challenged, i have a very messed up school and class history because i have always been in a support (special ed) class untill last year when i FINALLY proved to them that i wasn't a fucking moron and didn't need to be baby sat

i am from ohio, i have never even been to cali, :( been to 18 different countries including turkey and russia but never new york or cali, pretty sad. also there is NO CHANCE i could ever get into a cali school and alot of people have told me they think i would do well at a new york school but i really really have no interest in the east coast or cali

come up to UCC in Kamloops, well actually its named juist changed to TRU Thompson Rivers University, i know it sounds like a some infomercial school but its a full fledged Uni know and it has a really nice campus. Centered right in the middle of BC making it easy to get to either whistler or the rockies (well 3 1/2 to whistler and 5 to Kicking Horse) and Sunpeaks is 45 min away, check it out www.cariboo.bc.ca. Oh yeah did i mention there is allready snow in kamloops? no snow at UBC if there was you wouldn't make it to school cause half of vancouver would be in an accident
