UBC

I went to SFU last year.

I didnt think it was as bad as others are saying.

From people I've spoken to say its a fairly well known school in terms of degrees.

Of course people from UBC are going to talk poorly of it.

And the highest suicide rate thing in western canada thing is not true. I'll agree the campus looks like something off star trek and all the rain blows.

I'm not going to lie, I didnt exactly enjoy my time there. But I think it would have most likely been the same at UBC.

The weather is shit, and not nearly as many parties as UBC and the security are douche bags. But I guess the one bonus is there is snow in the winter sometimes and tons of rails.

I certainly dont think of SFU as a bad school. Just its not a bunch kittens and rainbows.

But really for me a school is a school and SFU offered me money and had a stronger athletics program. Which might not have been the best reason to go there.

But I know allot of people who really enjoy SFU. Its kind of nice being away from the city.

I may go back there in the fall depending on how motivated I am.

 
i usually just go skiing on acf day. and de la played like the first week of school at the pit... it was really good too
 
up at 6am to drink! wonder if I will make it to the fair though, i usually just party everywhere else...but de la soul would be cool....don't really care about the other acts...
 
im thinking of going next year to ubc and was wondering if someone could answer some of my questions, please:

living after first year: is being far away from campus a big deal? do students live in the same general area? does partying die down because of lack of closeness to other students? any peeps from ontario (thats where im from)

skiing: is it possible to ski during the week at ubc? at say seymour or something? do people do alot of skiing pre xmas? people down for handrails when it snows?

and my last question, i doubt alot of people will be able to comment on this but: skiing wise what is preferred ubc or mcgill? i know i will be ripped on but im an east coaster and when i went to ubc for march break, each lap at whistler took a super long time...

Did you just compare Quebec skiing to BC skiing? You don't take "laps" at Whistler so much as you just ski. Maybe that's your problem. Anyway there's lots of ON people, and they tend to stay, so that probably tells you something about the relative quality of skiing.
 
Yeah laps at whistler take a while. It's called "skiing", and it's something you'll have to get used to. On the plus side, liftlines are nearly non-existant most of the time, so whatever.
 
More time skiing, less time on chair.

Unless you're really unfit and can't handle that much skiing I don't see the problem...
 
Go Forestry UBC! ... and go coconut (tomorrow) .. mud wrestling, bonfire, coconuts, you get laid, free tee, and cheap beer....... that there is reason enough to go to UBC
 
my current school is extremely lame and did not send UBC all my documents...So I still don't know if I am getting accepted.
 
haha yeha it got shut down, and forestry is sweet. I am in WPP its wood engineering.....liek engineering for people who aren't loosers.   hahah nah but it does have more normal peeps in it + plus about as slack as mining eng.

also in regaurds to first year lioving on cmapus makes a HUGGE diff, thats where most peepps make all of thier friends. I didn't do first year, or second year ( transfere student) and i regret it huge. Luckily i know lots of peeps in Vancouver but its hard to meet peeps at skool when you missed out 1st year and live in a  crappy spot.  I'd also take a super slack class load first year liek 3 classes each term ( but sign upf ro 4 each and drop two) then you can party all the time, and nevvvver even think about stress. 
 
i'm pretty sure with WPP you don't become a P. Eng.... which means you won't make as much. correct me if i'm wrong. I'm going into Geological Engingeering, which will eventually lead to a 6 figure salary, which is pretty cool. It's kinda like mining too, but there's more opportunities to work in the city which is sweet.
 
^ yeha no you don't get a P.Eng but you make as much sometimes more than engineers.  Kiln operatores make 120,000 plus, starting wages out of skool are average 62,000.  Plus overall we don't have to pay insurance costs and shit so you generally end up taking home more money. 
 
one last question, i know that houses that people live in for 2nd 3rd 4th years are fairly far away from campus, do people find this a big deal?
 
you also get a free bus pass, and the busing system to get to UBC is quite convenient, so I wouldn't worry about it, as long as you don't live much further away than commercial drive.
 
I hear the sound system sucked just like last year. I never go, I never regret not going.
 
you don't go to acf for the music, you go ebacsue its sums up the year in a big enjoyable day of drunking.  We took part in a competition and won a free vip pass to the molson thing, but we only won 1 instdea of 3, so our friend went in and passed us beers out the whoel time, and you had to chug the beer before the security gaurd came and  took it away from you....it was super funn.  Same roebts encore was sick too...i was starting to sober up again by then and actually remember moments of it. 
 
It should, that's bullshit. Especially to stand up a group of students, and one who you have a past business relationship with. Lame. Good to hear Sam Roberts came through though.
 
it doesn't take that much to be held at the border, apparently they played the other scheduled show they were supposed to have later the same day.

 
I got held up at the border last summer coming from Oregon to Whistler...They stopped us for like 2 hours, searched us for weapons/drugs, took our car keys, and searched every part of our car. I'm still not sure why. We didn't have anything illegal at all.
 
you musta looked super suspicios.......every time i have been oevr the boarder its beena  breeze, and i've looked liek shit and been in a shitty as cra with garbage in the back, i have no idea how or why they let us in. 
 
well on the way back we crossed in a different place that was like 30 minutes to the east, and we drove right through it pretty much.
 
McGill = more money, more partying.

UBC = cheaper, you're most likely not 19 yet so no clubbing or anything like that, and kickass skiing. I hear the town of Montreal is more fun than Vancouver too... Tough choice for sure, but the few extra grands you'll save by going to UBC could be put to good skiing related use.
 
Well I'm transferring...So I need to know if I got in, because I have to register for classes here and pay my tuition for next semester at my current school very soon.
 
I super want to live in Vancouver, it seems like such a chill place and all the wilderness and sailing and skiing that is so near by. But it means that I'll leave all my friends behind, and I'm not sure if I can do that. McGill has a better environmental Science program than the Vancouver universities. The money issue is not a huge problem, the partying is a small bonus but not something that's a huge factor. I'm hoping that major entrance scholarships will sway the decisions (I'd have to be stupid to give up 20,000$ and go to McGill). Also, because I applied late to McGill I can't get any money from them at all, though apparently I might get cheaper tuition due to my french citizenship. Anyways, it's still up in the air, and it's not a decision that needs to be made immediately.
 
i know someone earlier was saying its better to be farther away from campus but why?

is there some sort of student ghetto like say at mcgill, or is it really spread out and if it is spread out is it a big deal?
 
i think living on campus is the shit, specially 1st year, it where you meet everyone....the onnly reason to live off campus is if you live on the north shore right below one of the tmns and go up ever single day. Otherwsie live on campus.  There are a bunch of residences all spread out a bit.....but its still super good. 
 
ya id for sure live on campus first year, no question for the years after id want to move into a house and im getting the feeling there is no student ghetto/ district in which they all live, my one concern about it
