UBC

well, UBC is definitely one of the top universities in canada, of this i have no doubt and most rankings place us top 5 in canada. myself, i am third year at sauder, major finance, and it has been a great experience thus far. in terms of international rankings, financial times ranked the sauder mba program 67th in the world (down from 55 at last review).

i definitely recommend sauder, however, if you are plan on doing a post-grad business degree, doing your undergrad in engineering or math can be very beneficial; although you may have to play catch up on some fundamentals when you do say your mba, the math skills are not adequetaly applied at sauder (not even in finance) but become very important in post grad studies, particularly when dealing with financial derivatives, probabilities, and optimization.

also, if you enroll in sauder, there are many extracurricular organizations that can be very beneficial. speaking personally, the finance club has given me many valuable experiences meeting professionals and providing lots of free food. furthermore, as you approach graduation, there is definitely an enhanced need to prostitute your time and 'network' to say and meeting potential employers as well as obtaining resume beefing experiences. truly, even if you have a 4.0 gpa, you still won't have first choice of you job if you don't have relevant job experience. get out there and work for a financial services firm. it'll tell you if you like the career or not, plus itll enhance your resume tremendously.

anything else? probably, oh well, pm me if you have any questions

That kind of blows, since the University as a whole sits around the 35th mark worldwide. Thank you Science Faculty, way to carry the team!

if its the same as it was when i was in student housing, the whole deal is on a lottery system anyway... so they dont guarantee you shit, even as an international student. id say look for something in town... something in Kits... im way happier living off campus. unless you like frats and whatnot, its a lot more normal living in the city and you dont get "stuck" on campus. thats pretty rad though, welcome to canada and so on. they kick me out this summer... assholes.

thanks...I applied for Gage Tower, Fairview, and Rits. But seeing as my housing application was late and such, I doubt I'll get anything.

Can reasonable housing be had off campus for ~$600 per month?

I really need to do some research of my own on the off-campus housing situation, but any info you could give me would sure help.

definitely... you can find shit to share for around 300. id say expect 4-500. i think the ams site (ams.ubc.ca) has a housing listing page.

good advice for planning your schedule: look at the map of ubc, and decide if you can get from class to class in 7-8 minutes based on your original couse/section selection. you don't want to be stuck with something like back to back classes in the forestry building and then the Chan centre, because you'd never be on time. look at a map of the campus and you'll see what i mean.

Be careful what busses you are near. It's easier to get to campus where you would take the 49, 41. the 44, the 4, or the 25, than somewhere you gotta b-line or skytrain then b-line

600 a month for something that's actually livable. Like Josh said you can get shit for 4, or if you happen to find a goldmine like him you can do very well for 4. But if another situation like that was coming along, dibs.

I might still be looking for a place around then, so let me know of your progress when you arrive.

screw u buddy im only in grade 10 but i need to start to figure out how much i need to pull up my average so i can make it in

u dont have to be a ass hole about it

Say 82 for arts, 88 for sciences, 90 for commerce on your top 4 provincially examinable courses in grade 12, and your grade 11 grades (which count for somewhat less). That's what it was when I arrived. By the way, when I was in grade 10, I could spell...

admission averages for 2006:

UBC Vancouver:

Human kinetics: 87

Sciences: 90

Arts: 84

Engineering: 79 (due to a huge increase in the number of first year engineering seats this year, it was higher last year by quite a bit)

Forestry: 75

Sauder School of Business: 84 (+personal profile.... ie - you need more than just good marks)

Land and Food Systems: ~80%

UBC Okanagan:

Arts/Sciences/Engineering/Management: 75%

Fine Arts: 67% + portfolio

Nursing: 80%

i dont know what you just said... but ill tell you taking the b-line from cambie... theres pretty much no line and its direct. living in sasamat would be ideal i guess but... in any case yeah, living near a major bus route is definitely a plus.

no problem.

the residence lottery is done now, i got in :D. you should look off campus, but also apply to the private residences at UBC.

well I got my application in...and apparently they do save some housing for international transfer students, so I could still potentially get an online place. we'll see.

and how come that engineering average is so low? Here at USC, engineering is the department with the highest scores in everything, and its the hardest to get in...

well, that's a typo that makes absolutely no sense. I might get an on-campus place. Not online.

wow...weird typo.

yeah, staying in is really hard. the entire first year engineering program tries to weed out the people who they deem unworthy. more later.

i know hte actual architecture program is grad studies... but i dont know about like arch-e or whatever they call it.

marketing students at that. the guy who edited (jorgen... dude with the curly hair and the hammer) it makes norwegian skate vids... pretty ridiculous.

Wow. That video.. reminds me of top gun theme day at WB. That bum has never looked so hot before.

Oh and I was talking to a prof there yesterday and due to all the construction the last prez started, there are going to be some serious funding cuts to programs.... Just thought I'd let you know.

I'm still having a really hard time decided btwn SFU and UBC. Major Entrance Scholarships and getting into Science at UBC are two deciding factors beyond my control.

Btw I want to study Environmental Sciences.

Don't go to SFU.

If you don't make it into sciences the first year, go into arts and transfer second year, I don't think it's that hard and competitive. First year science classes are pretty basic, and you can easily take physics, chem, bio, and math while being in arts.

are you looking for easy too? I've taken a plethora of electives in my time, here they are

EOSC 116 - Dinosaur's earth

Taking it this term, there are three profs, the first one is rad, and we watched lots of computer animated dinosaur movies....basically learning about the ancient earth, pretty cool, and if you put 30% effort into studying you should come out with a good mark

EOSC 114 - Disasters is rad too

Phil 260A or Hist 260A

History of Science.....very very interesting describing vivesection, eugenics and other stuff...take home midterm (2 five hundred word essays) and take home final (2 five hundred word essays)

Soooo easy and almost captivating.

Astronomy 101

Not that much math, but you might want to take Astronomy 310 or 311 if you are scared of a ltitle math......but Astro 101 is all about the solar system and its planets and moons, which everyone should know about space, since its the biggest thing that exists.

Poli-Sci 101

Not that easy, but you learn a lot about how the Cdn goverment works, which I had no idea before, really glad I took it. Now I understand all that political madness

Comm 100 Intro to Canadian Business (not for you, cause you said you were in commerce)

but for everyone else it's a good course if you are not taking business....there are two professors and one of them "Johan" is one of the best I have ever had.....very entertaining

I'm taking Psyc 205 right now, and the exams are not that hard and its very interesting...i would highly recommend it it you have any interest in psyc

don't go to SFU, it sucks. The campus looks like a fucking prison, and it has the highest suicide rate of any university in western canada. It's just a depressing place overall.

UBC, on the other hand, has an awesome campus with a couple of good bars.

I can't see them cutting funding very much if at all, they just raised our tuition by 2% (doesn't sound like much, but when you're an engineering student like me and are paying $6000+, it adds up).

you said that you have a 91 average, but where are you going to school? It's easier to get a 91 some places in the world than others, and UBC definitely takes that into account when you apply.

I honestly thought EOSC114 Natural Disasters sucked. Except for Roland Stull and the last short bald guy, the other profs were pretty lame, and you HAVE to read the book as the questions on the tests are really specific (to a stupid extent too).

Funny, astronomy 101 is taught by my stepdad ;)

I am taking Comm100 right now, I loved it, until Johan stopped teaching it, so I am now stuck with the other prof, Cindy, who really brings no insight at all in her lectures (easy online quizzes twice a week, so you have to read the chapters which is a good thing), so I don't show up anymore like the rest of the class. Material is great stuff to know though. Apparently Johan had some health issues, but the rumour has it he got kicked out of the Sauder staff for crossing a line, which isn't surprising but too bad.

Agreed on Poli 101, Paul Kopas is a really good prof too, taking the class right now (and not writing my research paper).

really? I never bought the textbook for eosc 114......

yeah cindy, that's her name...boring...uninspiring....

Johan kicked out? nooooo.....i will ask my old TA for confimation

I go to SFU.

Don't bother. It's a shit hole.

There's a reason no one who goes to SFU bothers to comment on it. It's fucking projects of Canadian universities. If I were you, I'd go ANYWHERE BUT SFU. Being "close-ish" to skiing isn't worth being at SFU.

The main campus is 100% concrete. It's ugly. It's always cold. It's nearly always raining. The chicks are ugly, and saying hi to them pretty much guarantees you an "attempted rape" charge and a court date. Most of the profs suck. The courses and programs are super disorganized. Student Services? More like Student Disservices. Every fucking asian retard is on their phone in the library or watches YouTube videos on their laptops with their volume cranked. Buying food on campus is nearly impossible, decent coffee isn't available. Housing? GHETTO. If you're really unlucky, you'll have to take a class at the Surrey campus. Why is that bad? IT'S IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING GHETTO. Registering for courses is nearly impossible and you'll never get what you want, meaning that graduating in 4 years is statistically damn near impossible.

Going to SFU has sucked the desire to learn right out of me. I used to be smart, I used to care, and I used to try, but now, all I want is my useless, worthless, SFU-branded "degree" so I can get the fuck out of this hellhole and get a job. But, oh, wait, an SFU degree is nearly worthless, and the school doesn't have any kind of even somewhat decent career services or any respect with any companies, so you're fucked when you grad! AWESOME! And alumni? Uh, none of them even want to admit they went to SFU.

So, in conclusion: SFU sucks. Don't bother. Clear enough for you?

What are you taking from him? He's pretty much the best marker and smartest prof in the department if not the university. If you want a cure for insomnia, take a class from Phil Resnick.
