YO!

Any other newschoolers going to UBC next year? Im into fine arts and will be signing up for a bunch of the film related classes so hopefully I can get into film production second year. My friend from vermont who went there this year, is bringing his car out there next year so thats gonna be awesome for rides to whis other than the weekend bus from the campus.

Anyone know what the deal is for room mates? I know some schools have surveys and stuff to take, but I'm not sure about UBC.

Anyways, really looking forward to next year and was just hopin to get in touch with some other NSers in my situation.

Seeing as I didnt commit to any other schools yesterday, I guess Im going to UBC. Im going to be traveling from PA, so it's gonna be a huge change. Im really hoping ill be able to drive out. Its good to see other people from the east coast making the move like me.

I'm pretty sure roommates are randomly assigned. You can also choose to live in a single room if you want to pay the extra coin.

UBC ended up being second for me. I really liked it, and wanted to go there, but decided on UW instead.

I'm from Boston so both would be a long distance away.

I'll see all of you there! Coming from Calgary, Alberta, so not that far. Pretty damn stoked, science is going to destroy me though. Oh well, it'll be fun.

you can prefer roomates if you have a buddy you want to room with. other wise they put you with someone with similar characteristics regarding drinking, morning person etc. as per the survey thing you have to fill out. i dont think its 3gs more for a single room though. more like 8-900 more.

i m from france and i ll be doing my fifth year of study at UBC.

in mathematics.

i m kinda lookin for skiers roommates. i ski park a lot. :)

if anyone who skis a lot needs a roomate pm me. :)

oh and i m a nice guy :)

A couple questions for people who have attended UBC:

Whats the ratio of asians to white people? I hear its the university of a billion chinese.

For anyone who has gone into the engineering faculty, how much time did you have to ski? Obviously making sure I get all the homework/studying is going to be top priority.

I actually looked at the meal plans, and I figured out that the varsity one works out to $17 a day, and thats just the overall value of the plan divided by 240 days for 8 months - I didn't factor in days you'd be on break or anything.

yo im im my third year at uvm but im heading out to vancouver to go to ubc in the fall. thats sick you/your friend are driving from vt you def need to hook me up with mountain rides this year whos your friend its a small ass state i bet we have friends in common

anyone take an english they would recommend? im workin out my courses and schedule right now. any profs you liked or didnt like? im hopin i wont have some prof with a huge accent which I heard is a problem for many kids haha.

so ya, any english course insight would be sick

aiight thanks. ya I only need 1 english in the first 2 years but im taking it freshman year for sure. so its just a matter of trying to find the most interesting/easiest class haha.

my highschool work habits are going to kill me next year...

My newly acquired 4 Runner will be making weekend treks up to Whistler starting in November. I'll probably make a post in the carpool thread when that begins. I can take myself and 4 others with plenty of room for gear.

Any recommendations on what classes to take for electives anyone? I'm just looking for some fun classes to take on the side, don't really want to fill my entire time table with math, physics, and chem.

And any other info we should know concerning course selection? I want to know as much as possible so I don't end up accidentally scheduling all my hardest classes for first year in one term haha.

For everyone else, I know someone who went to UBC last year, I'm probably going to talk to her this weekend about stuff so I will report back later.

^As with everything it depends what you're interested in. I can give anyone the goods on the best profs in the English, Phil and Law faculties (I'd know if any of you were in Law, so probly not that at this point) and some good courses but if you hate English lit then that's not doing you any favours.

Unless they've changed the course codes, EOSC 314 is actually the easiest one.

thats:

EOSC 314 The Ocean Environment

An introduction to the oceans and the processes that have shaped them, their composition and movement, waves, tides, beaches, interactions with the atmosphere and human exploitation of the non-living resources. Not for credit in the Faculties of Science or Applied Science. No background in Science or Mathematics is required.

same course you were talking about?

Yep. It's pretty much geography 12. It's for arts students to get their science credits without having to actually do work. Personally I think that kind of crap is a waste of time when you could be taking something interesting for your ~$300.00 or whatever a course costs these days, but YMMV.

think itd be easier than:

EOSC 314 101 (Lecture)

The Ocean Environment

An introduction to the oceans and the processes that have shaped them, their composition and movement, waves, tides, beaches, interactions with the atmosphere and human exploitation of the non-living resources. Not for credit in the Faculties of Science or Applied Science. No background in Science or Mathematics is required.

for EOSC114 they say this:

Co-reqs: (EOSC 111 is recommended.)

think its that necessary? I only need one science credit so im going the easiest way i can haha

yeah, i never took EOSC 111 before taking 114 ... im in psyc and commerce and have no sciency background and i got 86% ... so yeah .. its not hard and the prof is soooo coool!

For english 112 try to get Sarah Parry if you actually want to learn, she's kind of a hard marker but super fascinating and gives interesting lectures. Roberta Birks is okay ... she is really boring but marks easy.

anyone take intro to philosophy? sounds kinda of interesting but it would be a bitch to grade and thus low scores? idk

"PHIL 100 001 (Lecture)

Introduction to Philosophy

Basic problems and methods of Philosophy. Topics such as the existence of God, the nature and scope of human knowledge, the relationship between mind and body, personal identity, free will, issues and problems in moral philosophy. Credit will not be granted for both PHIL 100 and either or both PHIL 101 or PHIL 102. "

it is all year though, 6 credits

my registrations tomorrow at 245 PT.

ya signing up for courses all year.

still need like 2 electives in arts, anyone have some recommendations?

PSYC 101 is an easy one, as long as you can remember facts and shit. I found it quite interesting, this made it easier for me. try to get Dr. Rawn as your prof if you do it.

Juuuust finished up with what my timetable will probably be.

There's the picture, any suggestions or anything? I tried to give myself a whole bunch of time off on monday/tuesday, for skiing/doing-work-so-I-can-ski-on-the-weekend.

Works out to 28 credits, thinking about taking VISA 180, which is basically high school art for people that didn't take it lol. Takes care of my Arts credit requirements, fills my timetable, should be somewhat easy and fits in with the other courses I've already selected.

If anyone has any other suggestions about electives I'm completely open to just about anything, I was going to take Sanskrit but I would have had to reschedule everything.

Haha I worked so hard to make it happen.... Took me about 3 hours today. I have a feeling it will be very much worth it though. Only thing I don't like is having German from 6-8 tuesday and thursday night, but whatever - I have plenty of down time.

I wanted to take visa 180 but I read the teacher is incredibly difficult and unfair, so unfortunately Im not doing that.

Question for anybody who's been there:

I have 28 credits planned out first year. Is it a disaster if I'm 2 credits short of the recommended? I realize I need 120 credits to graduate, which means 30/year (for 4 years), but is there any way I can fit those in at another time or get them some other way?

I've tried to find something that I want to take that will fit into my timetable, but it seems next to impossible.
