Tutorial: How to custom paint your skis.

This year I really wanted some new graphics under my feet. After hunting around a little, and listening to the advice of some good friends I opted to draw my own on my old skis instead of investing in new sticks.

I've been wanting to do this for a bit and looked around and didn't see any really good info so I thought I'd wing it and then make a thread with some tips.

First: You're gonna need skis. I used my old Shreditor 112's because I've already gotten plenty of use out of the ski and I don't really care what happens to them since the bases aren't in the best shape.

An option I was tempted to try was to snag some new ON3P's with the custom white topsheet and paint those, but honestly that was an investment I couldn't afford. I double dog dare you to try it and post your results though!

Pop the bindings and remove any stickers, a razor blade works well for this.

Then sand the living heck out of them. I used a pretty heavy grit paper so that it would leave some scratches, I sanded in an oval pattern so that it would look a little like woodgrain.

Then tape your bases, well. I also had to tape the tip and tail rivets so no paint would get in there.

Hit them with a few coats of plastic spray primer, make sure to read and follow the instructions on the can.

(Hint: don't do this in your living room)

Once your primer has dried the proper amount of time hit those bad boys with your base color. I chose brown because I love the idea of wood grain skis. I did four coats of brown, lightly sanding in between, then I let them dry for 24 hours.

Now you need to figure out your design. I've been doodling and playing with designs for a few months now so I had a pretty good idea what I wanted, here's some sketches and mockups I did:

788969.jpeg

Then I used chalk to sketch the design on the skis. i used chalk because it is easy to wipe off if you make a mistake, which you will, translating a design from paper to your skis is hard.

788967.jpeg

788968.jpeg

Then I went over my chalk outline with a sharpie and wiped the chalk off with a damp rag.

After this I was left with the difficult decision of what to color them with. I ended up going with a combination of Folk Art Enamel and Posca paint pens, both available on Amazon.com. I chose those because that's what several people had successfully used to paint surfboards.

I put down a base coat of the main colors with the Enamel over my sharpie outlines and let them dry overnight:

788970.jpeg

The next night I finished up the Enamel. It doesn't fully cover the brown base, it's a little opaque which I like, I feel like it gives them more texture.

Then I filled in the details with the paint pens. They are a lot brighter and more precise so they pop very well. Finally I outlined everything with the black paint pen and added some details with a Sharpie. Here's the finished product:

788960.jpeg

It's meant to tell the story of the dude at the bottom as he travels the mountains and grows into the bearded Old Man Winter.

788961.jpeg

Nix is the Latin word for snow.

788962.jpeg

I also included everywhere important I've taken these skis. That's supposed to be Hood, Hellens, Adams and Bearhat (with NS member Literature skiing it) in Glacier National Park. As you can see geography is not my strong suite.

788971.jpeg

Next is the Tetons, where I live now, with Schweitzer, what used to be my home mountain, below. That's a bad drawing of my buddy who got me into skiing hitting the kicker.

788964.jpeg

Then the tails end with more Schweitzer, and the first NZ member I met, Caleb_E, also at Schweitzer. That transitions into the rolling golden hills of the Palouse, where I grew up. There are also some shoutouts in the outline of Idaho, and some snow ghosts, cause I love those.

Now I just need to seal them. I'm thinking I'll just use a gazillion coats of polyurethane and just know that they are going to chip a bunch. I'm not too worried, they're a tool, not a decoration.

However any sealing tips would be great.

So, anything I missed? Any tips for next time? Questions?

how much would it cost for you to do mine (i am half kidding)

Ha, if anyone seriously wanted a custom pair we could definitely work something out, although it might work better to have me draw something and get one of the custom manufacturer's to print it.

And thanks for the love, Gavin definitely gets so credit for inspiring me with his NS skis.

I would be interested! I believe JLev prints out some custom skis once in awhile. I know he accepts designs and chooses the best ones to be printed out.

If you go with urethane, go with a spar urethane, it is meant to be flexible but it does wear quickly. A better solution is to just put clear epoxy over it, epoxy is flexible and how pretty much all topsheets are done. Epoxy will probably be quite a bit more expensive but it will hold up better and you will have extra leftover to do other things with. Make sure you get one that is listed as UV protective as a lot of them aren't.

Word, I'm pretty sure epoxy is how topsheets are held together, not what they are coated with (I have a small chunk of experience ski building, but don't claim to know that much...) but I'll give that a look.

most top sheets are a fabric, so they are just soaked in epoxy, but it is also what they are coated with for that same reason. If you want to get your skis perfectly flat it will probably take multiple coats with sanding in between to get out the high and low spots.

Sorry dude, that's just not true. Thanks for the sanding advice but most topsheets are made out of polyethylene or another plastic. I've built and used a press, and been through enough factory tours to know that.

Thanks for the tip though!

Yeah, Jskis are FIRE and I'd love to get some of my doodles on some real sticks sometime but don't see that opportunity coming up too soon.

Yep, I'm an idiot. Plenty of people have used fabrics for graphics, but not the direct top sheet. I've personally only worked with veneers, which typically don't get the traditional plastic sheet treatment, so that is the experience that I was talking from.

Super Sick dude. I have a pair of custom topsheets I made too, but in a different way.

This top sheet is essentially a giant vinyl sticker. I painted it in photoshop with a Wacom tablet. made sure I saved to PDF to the right dimensions then sent it to a friend who works at a Decal Shop. Cost me like 40$ I think. But that price is the price of raw materials. If you were to get a Decal shop to do it for you, it'd be prolly like 200-300.

789053.jpeg

I think they turned out decent.

Also I heavily suggest only doing this way on brand new skis. Or if you do do it on used ones, you'd prolly have to sand the shit out of it and get it really smooth.

^ Nice dude that's sick! I'd really like to figure out how to print one from photoshop someday, I color my drawings in there with a tablet as well

If I recall all you have to do is measure the skis you want to put em on (length & width) and make sure you save as a PDF bc pdf will hold your dimensions. Then give em to the printer and they should be able to take it from there, or if not instruct you how to save out the file in the right way.

Oh, yeah, I've got all that figured out, haha, and I know exactly how I would go about designing and executing a ski graphic, I just haven't done so since if I'm gonna actually do it at some point I'd rather get it directly printed on the skis.

That's just not worth it for me yet though so I'll stick to painting em.

This is without a doubt the coolest ski graphic of all time. for some reason I got a tattoo vibe from this. Something about making it personal but also attractive because it's a visual art form. Seriously props, this is sick.

Seriously you should check out ASYMBOL I think that your painting style kinda resembles Adam Haynes.

Ahah, I live an hour away from ASYMBOL, it's the best and I wish I could give them all my money.

Adam Haynes is a huge inspiration, along with Schmies, Rachel Pohl, Jeremy Collins and a ton of others.

And yeah, I've dabbled in drawing some tattoos, really fun to try to meld meaning and art.

Thanks!

Cy you prove yourself to be "the man" over and over again. These are so sick! Those deserve a wall mount once you've decided to truly retire them.

i second this. if i can get a pair of a blanks i would love for you to sketch something out for me. i'll pm you if i get serious

too bad you gotta put bindings back on those beuts

I know... And I screwed up, since I have Guardians for them both James and Caleb get covered up once I put bindings on them. I'm gonna just keep hunting for some kind of budget all mountain ski and not mount these up until opening day, and pray that I can mount them on the wall instead haha!

But really I don't mind skiing em that much, they're meant to be abused and I can always do more drawings.

If you do just hit me up and we can talk design and pricing!

To the rest of ya, thanks for the love!

So sick buddy. Those look so cool. You should let your creative juices flow on some boots, I'll provide the boots you provide the art.

DEAL! You have to give some idea of subject matter though, they gotta have a story....

I'm already eyeing my old full tilts and my helmet and backpack. probably going to be a rainbow of custom paint jobs this winter.

Awesome I'll think but I'm so shipping a pair over to you to paint.

Hmm I have some old hellbents, and seeing how well you've laid this out I may just try it.

Wow. That's really impressive, I honestly think I would just build my own skis from scratch if I was going to do this though.

Yeah... I tried that 2 years ago. It's harder than it looks. I ended up with one snowblade which ended up as a mini shot ski after a lot of work.

those look sick! I painted my old blends a month ago and sharpied on some graphics. Even after lots of clear coat though I'm sure they'll be chipped to pieces within a week

whoa all of these custom skis you guys are making are so fucking rad. makes me feel bad about my artistic talents... but this is tempting me too much to grind my old skis down and lay down a design and see how it goes. Do you guys think these steps would work for painting a kayak?

13528303:dadi said:
How much would you charge to do this for someone???

Would really depend on the complexity of the design, it's mostly a matter of how long it takes me to do a pair (got that full time job, haha), and the cost of supplies. PM me and we can discuss if you are serious.

I'm also down to draw custom stuff for people, to be used as tattoos or art or whatever you wish, and any pricing just depends on how hard to draw it is, how awesome you are, etc... Feel free to hit me up though, I love drawing skiing related stuff for skiers and the more doodles I can pump into the world instead of having them clog up my bedroom the better.

Also, if anyone cares, I'm finishing up a pretty sweet project that I'll announce on my Insta as soon as I can show (and sell) them to the world, so if you care give me a follow at @cywhitling

Thanks for all the love NS, first clear coat goes on tomorrow!

Maybe this stuff? People use it to do surfboards sometimes. There's also various two part sprays for cars and such that make a nice, tough clear. I'd test it to make sure it does't make the marker bleed or run. I also don't know if it'll survive chipping, but it's probably stronger than your standard poly spray from the hardware store.
