Tutorial: How to custom paint your skis.

I painted a pair of salomon 1080s that I found for $20. Kept it pretty simple but I loved how they turned out. The paint ended up chipping a ton, even with clear coat, but it was sick while it lasted.

When you said now I have to seal them I read it as sell them and I was about to hop right on that..... So sick what your doing and I honestly think you should team up with JLev. Also if you like the wood grainy look, on3p has these custom veneer skis that I just found out about.

Oh, believe me, I have lusted after those for a very long time...

Im painting mine right as I type this and realized i should of done more research. I just spray painted the bases and then took some cheap paint and put it on top. I may be skiing in a puddle of color this weekend at Copper and if they come off I may have to have you custom them. Ill post some pics on here once im done to show you guys.

I have an idea to use plasti dip (usually used on car parts). My thoughts were to cut some kind of stencil and spray over it. I have the solid colored afterbangs. Anyone ever tried to plasti dip top sheets? Any thoughts?

plasti-dip is weak and will more than likely rip or start to peel off in the first 10 minutes , especially on skis. People claim it is strong/ durable, but they are talking cars which don't see much impact or friction from objects.

Hmm, yeah, that sounds... interesting, let us know how it works, haha!

I should get my first days on mine in a week!

"are those next years skis!?" ~shit skiers say

and what you will probably be hearing daily, along with people wondering who makes them. They look SICK!!

Super Sick dude. I have a pair of custom topsheets I made too, but in a different way.

This top sheet is essentially a giant vinyl sticker. I painted it in photoshop with a Wacom tablet. made sure I saved to PDF to the right dimensions then sent it to a friend who works at a Decal Shop. Cost me like 40$ I think. But that price is the price of raw materials. If you were to get a Decal shop to do it for you, it'd be prolly like 200-300.

I think they turned out decent.

Also I heavily suggest only doing this way on brand new skis. Or if you do do it on used ones, you'd prolly have to sand the shit out of it and get it really smooth.

How did you clear coat/ protect the decal?

If I recall all you have to do is measure the skis you want to put em on (length & width) and make sure you save as a PDF bc pdf will hold your dimensions. Then give em to the printer and they should be able to take it from there, or if not instruct you how to save out the file in the right way.

I worked with the guys athttp://www.epicboardskins.com/ to do a laminate for a commemorative Shot Ski. Turned out really well and great service, though I think after a while the vinyl would get pretty cut up on a pair of park skis.

Interesting.... I've been intrigued by the vinyl wraps, especially since I'd way rather put a digital design on my skis than have to hand paint them. I'm just pretty skeptical of durability still, may just have to wait until I get it together and try to press a ski again and then actually print it on the topsheet.

I'm intrigued by this as well. Wondering if epoxy would be an effective clear coat. How much did it cost you?

I didn't. Just used a butt load of primer before I applied, then it works exactly like any other top sheet. I have a buddy whose vinyl topsheets has lasted him perfectly for 4 years. but if you ride rough like I do then expect some chipping but nothing bad, it doesnt even peel.

I mean it all depends on how hard you go. I have a pal who put vinyl on his mountain skis and theyve been perfect for 4 seasons. But I'm hard on skis so 1 season with my vinyl i've chipped em a little. But nothing more than I usually chip topsheet. The nice thing is the chipped vinyl wont peel.

I posted some of my own designs, if anyone wants to give me feedback (they're in a thread called Ski Graphics)

For the base coat on the top sheet, did you use a special paint or just regular brown paint for wood? Skis are dope! Trying out my own idea on my old skis.

Just regular brown spray paint.

Good Luck!

Since I did see you at the ghee, how are these holding up? You have like 3 days on them right?

Weirdly well. I only have one inbounds day on em, but I lent em to my buddy who toured two days on them. He stepped on them a lot, learning how to kick turn can be hard on skis. Just a little chipping on the inside edges but I think they'll hold up well for the rest of the season!

Awesome!

Your skis turned out awesome! I did a similar thing, but wrapped my skis in vinyl from a company that makes vinyl specifically for skis. Their site is www.norkasports.com. Three seasons with them and still looking fantastic!

are the skis any heavier?

Of course, but I didn't find it to be noticeable, especially since these are already pretty heavy skis.

Update on the thread:

These are now wall skis, but I'll be scheming on more graphic ideas over the summer.

How much time did it take you to do the entire process? And also if I have like limited artistic ability, is it worth trying this out on an old pair of skis?

I painted a pair of skis with Liquitex acrylic paints for a class. My design was insane and the whole endeavor was insane because I ended up waiting until the last minute to do it, and didn't sleep for two nights in the process. It took hours and hours and hours. I'm happy with how they turned out, though. I don't plan on skiing on them, but I did seal the paint with Mod Podge. I have no idea how these would hold up to actual skiing, and I don't plan on finding out.

DUDE. HOLY CRAP.

Now that is insane, I bow to your superior and incredibly badass talent!

Really well done!

What dimensions did you use? I want to vinyl wrap a pair of skis this winter with some designs Ive been playing around with on photoshop but I have nooo idea how big everything has to be so that it looks crisp on the skis.

You think plastic dipping a boot could work? Any significant weight changes?

Do you think If I use just some of the markers to fully color my boots versus just drawing on them will work? Working on some orange boots and would like to mostly cover it, maybe with a large drawing or just all black or something.

It's pretty simple. First find the actual length of your skis you want. make you photoshop file the size of the skis length. Second find a picture of your skis online and past it into photoshop. This will give you the proportions of the skis. Make outlined boxes arounf each ski as tight as possible. This will act as rough borders of the skis. Bring those boxes to the top layer and lock them. Create your design within these two boxes (box per ski.) With the photoshop file being the accurate length and the boxes created from from the online image to give perfect proportions, then export your file as a High Quality Print PDF. Then take it to a Vinyl shop and they can proceed from there.

Hope that helps.

DM me if you got anymore questions.

Also make sure the skis are brand new too. And whoever applies the vinyl, have them prime the shit out of the skis' top sheets.
