That transitions into the rolling golden hills of the Palouse, where I grew up.

First off HELL YEAH the Palouse is where it is at! I dig it! living in Pullman now (I mostly drive out to brundage)

Awesome Tutorial, Your skis turned out Gnarly! I love the meaning behind every detail!

This summer I painted my skis using a similar method as you!

You think plastic dipping a boot could work? Any significant weight changes?

Do you think If I use just some of the markers to fully color my boots versus just drawing on them will work? Working on some orange boots and would like to mostly cover it, maybe with a large drawing or just all black or something.

You are the only one who is insecure about the colour of your boots, own it and worry about some other crap that actually matters. With that said, rit dye is the way to go.

Lol nah. I just like doing fun art projects related to skiing, thought it would be a neat oppertunity. I like the orange and black. Just want to shake it up.

I painted a pair of skis with Liquitex acrylic paints for a class. My design was insane and the whole endeavor was insane because I ended up waiting until the last minute to do it, and didn't sleep for two nights in the process. It took hours and hours and hours. I'm happy with how they turned out, though. I don't plan on skiing on them, but I did seal the paint with Mod Podge. I have no idea how these would hold up to actual skiing, and I don't plan on finding out.

That's pretty ambitious, they look cool.

It seems like you are already on the same page, but I would suggest never skiing on those. Acrylic will peel right off, and I think modgepodge is water soluble and rather brittle after it's dried for a while.

It's pretty simple. First find the actual length of your skis you want. make you photoshop file the size of the skis length. Second find a picture of your skis online and past it into photoshop. This will give you the proportions of the skis. Make outlined boxes arounf each ski as tight as possible. This will act as rough borders of the skis. Bring those boxes to the top layer and lock them. Create your design within these two boxes (box per ski.) With the photoshop file being the accurate length and the boxes created from from the online image to give perfect proportions, then export your file as a High Quality Print PDF. Then take it to a Vinyl shop and they can proceed from there.

Hope that helps.

DM me if you got anymore questions.

Also make sure the skis are brand new too. And whoever applies the vinyl, have them prime the shit out of the skis' top sheets.

Dude i feel like you could have a serious business right there. Sorta like the company "Canvas MX" they are a motocross gear company that allows you to customize your jersey anyway(importing pictures, using there general designs, etc) but instead of jerseys you could do skis, idk just a thought your skis are sick none the less!

Yeah, Jskis are FIRE and I'd love to get some of my doodles on some real sticks sometime but don't see that opportunity coming up too soon.

I think WSD does complete custom ski graphics

Thanks man for believing in the idea. However, I have already attempted to make it a business venture and the conditions aren't right. Vinyl material costs and vinyl printing costs are ridiculously expensive. The topsheet I got was through a friend who works at a vinyl shop, and he got it at wholesale of 30ish dollars. If I were to formally go through the vinyl shop as a typical customer the price would have skyrocketed to 200-300$ as I am told by my friend who works at the shop. Then comes the issue of can everyone afford custom graphics? Because for myself to make money on it, even at wholesale I'd charge 70$-100$, which that is best case scenario. (If the vinyl shop finds out I'm making money off of them because I'm getting essentially free vinyl from them, then the business venture will be ended there and I might get in trouble.) And to properly apply the new graphic you need a new ski with no topsheet chips or scratches. So is a person who just payed a few hundred for new skis and bindings going to really want to spend another 70ish$(best case scenario)/200-300$(Worst case scenario.) Also sadly there are a lot of really cool topsheet graphics out there to where people are satisfied with what they have and don't need a custom topsheet. But I'm happy you believe in the idea. If I could I would. But right now the only way I see myself doing this is by buying a vinyl printer myself. At that point it might be possible. But that'd be an upfront cost of 1000$-5000$. I'll look into it man. But once again thanks for the good vibes.

Bump because Cy is the man and let me use his art to make some graphics. Rough sketch, still gotta clean em up. But lets just give it up for cy here because one of one pair of these pulls bitches.

That's exactly what I did now I just need the final green light from him and hope someone somewhere can print it for me.

Hey, Sorry I haven't checked on this thread in a minute.

Haven't been skiing the painted skis this season, but I'm getting ready to paint another pair, just figuring out what to put on them.... I have a pair of Deathwishes with mismatched graphics that may be getting the treatment next...

Also, thanks for all the support and kind words! I actually got some art on a real ski this year, limited edition Bibby available from Moment: https://www.momentskis.com/products/bibby-pro-cy-whitling-edition

Hoping to keep desecrating a bunch more gear!

Damn I wish I could snag a pair of those. I have a pair of moment night trains that I may attempt to paint like you have.

Agreed, those things are money

Thanks!

Had an old pair of Moment Deathwishes with mismatched graphics so I cranked these out:

I also did a digital version, and I know Moment actually pressed a few pairs, although I haven't actually gotten to see any in real life yet....

I'm planning on doing a pretty simple paint job and my plan is to pretty much follow your instructions for sanding and repainting. It's not nearly as complex as yours but I'm more curious as to how well your method lasted. Plan is to do some kind of a dark side of the moon theme with the triangle being a snow covered mountain.

Cy, have you ever tuned any of your handpainted skis? If so, have you seen any damage from the clamps? I really want to paint one of my pairs this summer but I'm worried that the clamping cylinders will mess up the paint when I tune them next season.

I painted my bike frame with some oil-based paint markers. Anyone have any suggestions for a varnish? I'm thinking of going with krylon clear gloss but dont have any experience with it967621.jpeg
