Touring/big mountain ski

Pretty content on Volkl as I trait and love their gear. Looking at getting a day touring set up so marker baron wide frame bindings and volkl bash 115 or revolt 125? Opinions on the skis from buyers please. I feel 125 would be a tad wide and heavy for day touring and hiking ridges so the 115 would be slightly easier to mounouver. I am also pretty short at only 5ft 8 so might 125 be unnecessarily wide? Thought and general touring gear talk is appreciated. Recommendations on cut to size skins too please

I don't think u could be too short for a wide ski but it also depends on where u are touring, if you need boats then the 124s would be good but if it isn't super deep the 115 would be wide enough. I'd go for those

Those are going to be horrible touring in. Look to something more mid waist and way lighter man. You are going to have a bad time hauling such a heavy ski around

BMT109 or BMT122 depending on what snow you are expecting to ski. I'd say 109 as it's much much more universal

Not if he still wants to ski on the way back down. I tried out the bmt and although it was rad uphill it was scary down. It's just way to soft both length wise and torisionaly for me. I would go confession or katana if I wanted a touring ski from volkl

The Bash 115 and Revolt 125 are literally some of the heaviest skis on the market. If you're looking for a workout, I say go for it, but that is going to be a ton of weight, especially with Barons. And I'd definitely go with the 115 if you want any sort of versatility for non-ideal conditions — or leg strength for the way down.

If you like the idea of the Revolt and Bash, I'd steer clear of the BMT series since they are way more traditional and not very playful.

If you're willing to move away from one singular brand, there are so many better options.

I think it mostly depends on what touring you're trying to do. You say day trips, so does that mean this setup is only going to be used for short tours, and no time in the resort? Or are you thinking something mostly for the resort, and only touring a few times? If so, the weight won't be as big of a deal and will be good for the resort. But if this is a dedicated touring setup, I'd highly recommend looking for something lighter, as well as a tech binding setup. If you're willing to look beyond Volkl, I'd be happy to suggest some options.

I have the katana's and love them. that being said are they worth the 1200$ sticker price ehh probably gonna get good bang for buck anywhere also forget the frame get some shifts next year

Why are you looking at those two skis in particular? And not the Confession, Katana, Mantra, or 100eight for instance?

I want a twin tips Offpiste and touring ski, the mantra and the others are not twin tips are as wide as I want to go for freeride and cliff drops. I have wider park skis than the mantras

Well I'm looking for something I can use in resort as I'm hoping to go-to verbier all next winter. So literally only day tours but I want something that is a twin tips and twin rocker because I want to be hitting tricks etc. I get they're heavy but can't move away from the barons as I'm not big enough into the touring to warrant touring boots etc. So just a fat powder playful ski I can do day tours to inaccessible areas by lift etc

Then look for New bentchetlers. They are superlight and meet all your needs. You can also check previous version of Chetlers.

Obviously because I'm going verbier I want to be doing freeride riding so the ski I'm looking for in any brand has to be able to get up aswell as down just as well

Hmm sounds like you want more of a powder ski than a big mountain charger. The revolt 124 would be fine but awful to tour. If you are not 100% set on skiing Völkl maybe try the armada magic j. Will be much better to tour and will be easier to trick. Only downfall is hitting big cliffs 25ft+ and straightlining out (gets to sketchy). If you want to hit 10-15ft cliffs and do tricks I think the magic j is for you.

Not too bothered about the uphill lug, want something chargy, good for tricks and hit cliffs please. Any brand is appreciated

Bibby tour sounds perfect for you, magic Js are super heavy I wouldn't want to lug those uphill.

Ehh not really, definitely not a touring ski but for a ski that size in 190s 2200grams is much better than 2700g like the revolts

13919446:Rum_Ham said:
3.85 kg per pair so more like 1900g a ski for the 190 tours

Yes it’s a light ski but OP said he didn’t mind the wait and 2200grams for magic Js seemed like a decent option

Yo those skis are sick but as I live in the UK it's basically impossible to get them and the import tax would make them a £900 set of skis

I'm telling you, check out Atomic Bentchetlers. You can get them for 350-400 pounds on sale or even cheaper, they weight around 2kg in 185 and their shape profile is very similar to bash 115, No need to look futher

Yo I checked them out but I can't find any in a short enough length for me man

The cats are looking pretty sweet dude cheers

Yo what's everyone's opinion on the k2 marksman if I want a bit of hiking/touring but also shred the jumps? 106 underfoot and don't weigh too much

Seems a little heavy to me....there are some lighter skis around that size....however I would suggest 2 separate set ups as park riding can be super hard on frame and especially tech bindings.

Ct. 3.0 would be a good place to look...liberty makes a light all mountain ski I think (???) There's plenty of others too.

I have park skis too, in in about like free ride hits and natural terrain stuff so kind of all over the mountain. Any specific liberty skis I can have a look at?

I have a pair of CT 3.0s with kingpins and skins that i would sell because I maybe tour twice a year. Its a killer lightweight big-mountain setup. skis are 176s might be short for you.

Origin 106 or 116?

Are you in Euroland? If I'm not mistaken OP is in the UK?

I'd be looking at +180cm for your height tbh

Yeah if OP is really intending to ski big mountain terrain the 176s are short for him. Im 5 foot 4 and love the 176 length because it is both stable but also really managable and playfull for long days of touring where im tired. For OP I think the skis would be wayyy to playfull and not chargy enough. However weight is really the bigger factor, I weigh 135ish, if OP is similar the setup is quite killer.

180 plus? My dad's 5'9ish and had dps wailers in about 175 I think and I have tried them and they're chargy as hell. I get the marksmens might be too playful but I want playful and chargy

Marksmans are softtt. And yes man, weight, skill level and style/preference matter way more than height. I have a pair of directional skis that are 180s and I gurentee you they are allot stiffer, meaner, burlier and chargier than any wailer could be (I know because I used to own a pair way back when before i snapped them). My dad has 168 wailers right now and is a good 5 inches taller than me and 150lbs heavier. But he skis like a dad and doesnt need the stability a long ski gives you.

Not as stuff as the nano tech wailers I doubt it

Candide 4.0s would be a solid choice for a lightweight and stable pow ski to tour on. They're pretty light (the 182 is 1960g per ski), stable on landings at 118 underfoot, extremely poppy, copious tip and tail rocker, and they love going fast. I have a pair of 188s I'm selling to get something narrower for more all around use, at 5'8 I'd say those are too tall for you, but definitely a ski to consider in general.

Also skin wise, Black Diamond Ascension STS skins are a classic for good reason. I've had skins from BD and G3 and had issues with the G3 glue, never had a problem with BD. The ascension STS skins are 100% nylon, so they're gonna be more durable and climb better, if you're looking for a more packable and lighter weight option that has more glide, the glidelite mix custom sts skins are fantastic.
