In response to the close-minded "Rush is the greatest band ever" thread, list your top 5.

this thread is so hard to do, i can't just name 5 in any specific order.
 
in my opinion:

1. radiohead

2. a tribe called quest

3. talking heads

4. red hot chili peppers

5. de la soul

honerable mention to dmb and bela fleck & the flectones, cus its so creative
 
sublime- for thier mix of ska, reggae, rap, really awsome bass player and lyricaly deep songs. Really original first one of thier kind influenced slighlty stoopid and many other awsome bands.

beatles- Very original, many meaning in there songs but also had many fun songs. Crazy mix of different sounds (white album)

grateful dead- I don't really listen to them but very successful live shows. Great influence on jam bands. Helped influence what was going on in san fransico during the late 60's

The Who- one of the first great rock bands, great vocals and guitar. Knew how to make great songs that appealed to the masses. Great live watch them at woodstock.

Jimi Hendrix- yes he had a band, chnaged the way the guitar was made, great live got really deep into his music. Really poetic lyrics where he didn't have to say much to send a message.

None of those are in any order and I'm bored and I felt like backing up my choices
 
If I could have choosen 6 the other would have been RATM for bringing awsome meaningful music to a time where commercial music ruled
 
in no real order:

the beatles- not much that can be said that hasnt been said already, but the beatles are just awesome. their music resonates on a deep level, plus its catchy as hell

phish- i went to my first phish show 12 years ago and have been a huge fan ever since. in terms of musical technical prowess and improvisation ability, i don't think they can be surpassed

grateful dead- the OG's of the jamming scene. i love that they could go from straight up country songs to jazz to blues to full on psychedelic rock in the span of a set

they might be giants- this might be a wierd choice, but i pretty much grew up listening to these guys and really love their skewed outlook on the world

led zepellin- again, such a classic band, so much has been said. i particularly like their various references to mythology and middle earth. pretty unique. and really, its pretty hard to beat the zep for badass guitar rock.
 
beatles - needs no explanation.

the clash - in my mind, best mainstream punk band to ever exist. clever lyrics, political without being annoyingly so. they had some loud angry songs and some really beautiful ones (spanish bombs)

jimi hendrix - revolutionary guitar player. good songwriter. doesn't need much explanation.

greatful dead - creative, excellent musicians. they combined folk, blues, rock, country, and psychedelic in an epic way.

dire straits - their first 2 albums at least. just plain old excellent music.

but all of this is apart from jazz musicians like coltrane, coleman, rollins, and davis, who are leaps and bounds above any rock band in their understanding of music.
 
Since we're justifying our choices apparently, here goes:

1. James Taylor - a classic, amazing storyteller. Plays with some of the best musicians of his time.

2. Elvis Costello - I have no justification other than that he's amazing.

3. Bob Marley - Do I really need to explain?

4. Billy Joel - the man made the piano badass.

5. Jimmy Buffett - Any man who can act like a kid, get drunk, go fishing, and sing about cheeseburgers and still make one hell of a living gets my respect.

oh...i guess i will justify these bands since other people are...disagree with me if you want

Cream-because they were pretty influential to british rock/rock music in general...and...they had eric clapton for christs sake, not to mention ginger baker, an amazing drummer, and jack bruce as well (the bassist)

Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young-this band was just ridiculous. all of them played lead guitar and sang, I think all of them were solo performers at some point too, just, an amazing band with amazing musicians

The Beatles-influential as hell and popular as hell.

The Doors-pretty creative music that influenced a lot of diff. styles of rock, pretty innovative for their time

The Who-just...amazing. the band members were just amazing at what they did, this band was "stacked", so to speak...kind of like crosby, stills, nash, and young.

meh...that could all sound like bullshit but w/e

The Casualties - helped bring back/create awesome streetpunk

Blood for Blood - just listen

Dropkick Murphys - (everyone is gonna be like omg lolz i love them too) but really i like them for thier old stuff and its thier best stuff coming from the streets of boston having nothing and being pissed off when they fucking ruled. new stuff sucks.

Stray Bullets - a really unkwon boston ska band that doesnt play anymore but they were so aweomse and their cd was nuts. check them out on shitspace

any local boston punk/hardcore band, boston is where real music is fucking made!

 
Hendrix-amazing song writer and guitarist. not much more to say

Beatles-needs no explanation. So influential it's ridiculous.

Bob Dylan-story telling, lyrical genious

Bob Marley and the Wailers-yeah

and for the fifth i'll just leave blank for everyone else who cannot be fit into just five choices.
 
Jimi Hendrix - For the technical music theory

B.B. King - For the feeling

Traffic/Cream/Clapton - For all the classics in one man

Elliot Smith - For acoustic guitar and anguish

Pink Floyd - For astral projection
 
pink floyd - their musical ability to create a unique sound, combined with the fact that their albums flow together like a classical composition as opposed to a jumble of singles really sets them apart

CCR - what more can i say, everyone knows them, they're great, and it's music that the common man can relate to.

The Beatles - Highly influential to all forms of modern music, as well as having great lyrics that went deeper than the surface.

Rolling Stones - The yin to the Beattles yang, they were the other side, and brought music that has built into what rock is today.

Public Enemy - Some of the OGs on the hip hop scene, brought faster rhymes and rhythems to the scene while also bringing a political conscience. They were also not afraid to expand beyond and mix with other forms of music.

Honorable mention: Nirvana (changed the music scene of the 90s), Led Zep (Just epic, they defined the term ROCK STAR), Pearl Jam (throwback hard rock band that's amazing in concert)
 
1.Bob marley- when you say reggea to 90% of people the first person they think of is Bob

2.Pink Floyd- probably some of the best music ever, if you havent heard the symphany dark side of the moon get it

3. Tu Pac- One of the fathers of the new "gangster rap" his lyrics cant be beat by anyone to this day

4. The Allmon brothers band-best country rock band that multipul generations like

5. Eric Clapton- just because....
 
This is the thread for top 5 greatest bands, which implies music, not angry people talking and/or shouting into microphones over shitty synth drum beats and stolen loops from other artists who actually worked to produce quality music.

I respect intellectual rappers who at least rap about relevant shit or make their own beats, but saying tupac is some influential artist or the rest of these dirtbags who rap about how sad it is to be in the ghetto while they fill out their divorce paperwork and do lines of coke off a hooker's ass, is a total farce. Let's look at some of these influential and inspiring works

Truly this is a man who wants to further the cause of getting kids out of the ghetto, and making life better for the black youth.

Seriously that's some ignorant shit, what a joke. Listen to whatever you like but to say this man or anyone like him is in any way a positive influence is akin to saying Hitler was an excellent leader. Just because he gave an interview on MTV news balking about how sad the ghetto is and how he wants to 'empower' his 'people' does not make him a reformer.
