To wear or not to wear? HELMETS.

I have watched 'The 86' quite a few times now and i cant help but wonder how none of them have got serious head injuries from doing the shit they do. Also, you never see street skaters wear helmets in comps or or on the streets and you never hear too many devastating stories. So why are they so important in skiing in a park covered in snow?

I just wanted some of you guys opinions on helmets. Do you think they will save your skull in a bail?

I say on the mountain and hitting urban, wear a helmet. That extra protection definitely can't hurt. However if you are messing around in the backyard or hitting summer setup than it's not really a big deal if you have one or not. Backyard shit is rarely big enough to pose a serious threat of head trauma beyond a mild concussion. But hey, I'm not a doctor.
 
Uhhhhhhhh what? A simple youtube search of skateboarding bails will change your mind on that.
 
the only time i dont wear one is when im crushin bumps on slushy spring days. for the rest of the time, i just bought the bern brentwood.
 
Idk why people choose not to wear them in the first place. I guess its the thug factor for some and the comfort for others. But non of that is worth perminent brain damage.
 
Used to never wear a helmet, until i had a serious head injury on a jump, and it was just doing a 3. Now whenever i ride park, i wear one.

Chances of getting fucked up in the park are higher than someone going out of control and crashing into you on a mellow run or groomer. I'll take my chances cruisin the Mtn.
 
if im doing urban, big mountain, or jumping seriously i will wear one. if im hiking a rail i usually wont and on mellow park days i sometimes do and sometimes dont
 
ah the good old brainbucket discussion ...

personally i'd say it's common courtesy to wear one, that way when you do fuck up, it will be less messy to clean up for the others ...
 
there's lots of reasons people give for not wearing helmets, but in the end it's almost always just for style or so people think they're badass. i can't say i always wear a helmet, i'm just as vain as the rest, but if i'm in the park or doing something that's genuinely scary/dangerous, i throw one on every time. it can save your life, if you're doing something dangerous you should wear one, and i think it's pretty irresponsible for all these pros who tons of kids look up to to send the message that not wearing a helmet is cool.
 
Wear one. They will keep you safe . And if you get a nice one you will not even pay attention to it
 
people will say that wearing a helmet doesnt look cool or they are uncomfortable but i think you look a lot worse laying in a hospital bed with tubes coming out of you because you have a TBI, just my opinion

Helmets all the way. I think i've not worn a helmet for skiing once in the past 10 years
 
This day when your helmet will save your life, you might understand. And it's not as if a helmet is cumbersome, unlike in skate.

I hate helmets. Hate them. They are uncomfortable and I hate the added weight on my head. However, I do wear one when I'm in the park or doing intense stuff. If I'm just cruising groomers with friends and the conditions aren't iffy, I love skiing with just a hat.
 
Okay, well I suffered a 5-6 month concussion from a blow to the head while skiing in the park at tremblant. Caught an edge at the top of a down-flat, went head first into the flat and then the side and then ice. And all that was while I was wearing a helmet. While the chances of injuries that sever are slim, still worth it. I don't even want to think about what would have happened if I wasn't wearing one.
 
I feel the same way when driving a car, having this strap across my chest.. I would much rather fly through the window and let my brains scrape off the road...

On a serious note, i would also definitely wear a helmet. I know i might be contradicting my self. But i had a friend who borrowed my helmet on a run down the mountain. A snowboarder tried to turn around while seated, ending with him sliding down towards my mate, smashing the side off the his board into the helmet (my helmet) he was wearing.

I actually have the footage of the incident, it looks quite brutal.
 
wear a helmet, i can barely even tell that its on my head and if you eat shit and land on your head you wont die
 
The one time I forgot my helmet at home I came back home with a fractured skull. Never forgetting ever again.
 
I have only ever skied one day in my life without a helmet but I definitely think its steezier with out a helmet
 
I got mild concussion when I crashed in the park when I was wearing one so I'm guessing without it it may have hurt just a bit. Mines light and comfy and gives me a little added bravery. I always wear one.
 
i wear mine depending on my mood that day. the standard tests for a snow helmet are seriously fucking pathetic and i won't rely on mine to protect me from fuck all because it can't. it's up to me make sure i don't hit my head, because helmet or not, my head will get fucked up if i hit it skiing.
 
It may seem like they don't get head injuries but they definitely do. Lots. Maks has had 7 or so concussions if I remember correctly, and I'm sure the rest of them have had their fair share as well.

And like someone above me said: there is no debate. Helmets will protect your head. May not look as cool, but if you care more about fashion then maybe you need a knock to the head.
 
Mostly true statement.

Collision at anything past like 10mph and the helmet isn't doing that much.

However, it does help significantly to have one should you hit your head on a tree or rock or anything with an edge that could possibly crack your skull. It will distribute the hit. If you hit hard enough, you will absolutely still get a horrible concussion, but your less likely to also crack your head open.
 
14mph actually, and most snow helmets aren't even tested for sharp impact (bike helmets are), only blunt.

either way, the helmet makes no difference to me, seeing as i don't go around hitting my head on shit anyways.
 
Ive had this talk with my buddy who ended up with a pretty serious concussion last season while filming with Level 1 last year and it hardly changed his opinion...That said he does wear it trying new tricks so at least he has some common sense.
 
It's a law to wear one on my mountain starting in November. I'd wear one anyways though, literally everyone at my home mountain wore one anyways.
 
If I don't wear one I feel like my head is so open to be hit, like so vulnerable, plus my helmets keeps my head a little bit warmer on those colder days
