Ok, you dont need a 2500 camera to make a good ski flick. DVDs are AT MOST 30-50 cents per disc. If you pay anymore than that, you are getting ripped off. MiniDV tapes arent 10 bucks a pop, and you can re-use tapes. DVD cases are AT MOST, 25 cents a pop, unless you are buying them one at a time. As for editing, unless you want to fill a film with a crapload of useless effects, something as simple as iMovie can make a damn good movie. Effects aren't what make a movie for me, it's the quality of the filming and the flow of the edit. Maybe thats different for others. That about sums up the material crap.
As for other costs. most of the footage on some of these videos is either urban or resort/park footage. Therefore, its not really costing you anything that you would have spent anyway just to ski there. Yea, I recognize that some do more than this, but not all travelled around to different locations specifically to film there, and/or had a significant cost getting there and skiing.
Time, no amount of money can ever equal time "lost". However, I would assume that most of these people are doing it for fun. It is not like you are making these films to put food on your plate. So if you have fun doing these, the time isnt really lost, at least I dont think so. Yea editing takes a crapload of time, but that is something enjoyable as well. It does reach a point where it can seem like more work than fun, but I doubt you would be doing it on your own free time if it wasnt any fun.
For some of these films, the cost may be justified, but I sincerely doubt its the same for all, considering the content in all of them isnt the same. Some of them have mediocre filming, with a "point and shoot" attitude, with little, to no effort put into getting an original, creative, or artistic angle.
"I agree that the standard of skiers in the park is progressing and anyone with a camera can capture it. but please strive to film from a more artistic angle. try to make your style different and not about how hard you think you are."
I'm not bashing the skiers in these films, nor am I bashing the editors or producers of these films. I am just simply stating why I BELIEVE 10 dollars isnt really reflected in what you're getting. Am I trying to push my opinion about these AM movies on you? No. So I'm not going to babble about this any further.
