TJSCHILLER.COM is UP AND HAS A SICK CONTEST

Coming from a working graphic designer...the disclaimer is bullshit. If you want someone to design a ski for you, give them credit. Don't bribe them with gear and then essentially steal their artwork and claim it as your own.
I deal with this stuff all the time and I always have clients sign contracts stating that they do not own the artwork I design for them, and they have no right to reproduce it without permission. Designing is my job and I need to cover my ass to get paid. Obviously, this is a contest, and you guys are looking for a good design on the cheap, but at least give them credit. I'm not saying you have to pay the winner the standard price for a ski design, but don't just jack their shit.
I would love to enter, but not under these conditions. All my work goes on my portfolio site, and is claimed as my own, because I created it.
And BTW, $2000 for a ski design is nothing, especially if it's really illustrative. Something like that could take easily 30-40 hours from concept, to thumbnails, to mock-up, to vectoring. That is assuming you don't do a full size original illustration as well, not on the computer.

I support you TJ, and I think this contest fucking rocks. So what if we aren't making money, I'm just stoked on designing Teej a new ski which if I were to win would be dopest feeling ever. I have worked so hard on so many designs for different contests and it really is all for the love of the sport. Although I have not made a profession out of graphic design I would like to eventually enter that field of work and I feel like this is a great way to build up a portfolio. Who gives a fuck about their name being on something anyways? If you win, you win and it is your design on TJ's skis. It's not like some one can deny the fact that you designed the topsheets. I am so stoked on this contest and I really can't wait for the results, or even for them to post their favorites.

What I got out of the disclaimer is that they 'own' the design, but how does that eliminate designer's name being attached to the skis?

Also, if I am lucky enough to win, I don't give a fuck if I get credit cuz I know that I am the original artist and my work was sweet enough for Teej to pick it. Plus I can show friends and family what I've done, this is not my career....yet. I am still in school so I will take every opportunity to get my art out there cuz that's my passion in life. I am not attached to any of my work so closely that I consider it my property but instead the property of the creative society of the world.

Disclaimer only says i own it so that the design cant be re-sold to another company to use. Design can be used for portfolio and self promotion obviously. Whoever wins is gonna get their name associated with the design... obviously, c'mon !

but typically an artist gets paid for designing a ski to my knowledge. I realize you're throwing prizes out and all, but without monetary compensation this whole thing just looks like coreupt trying to save some money while still getting outside graphics done for their ski.

dude. read the first page of comments.

I agree that the artist should be able to retain rights. But it's not like T.J. or coreUPT is going to sell the design and make millions. It's a ski - 3 years from now it'll be considered old and the design will fade away. The only difference is that if you choose not to enter you won't get the potential exposure you'd get from your design being rocked by kids all over the world.

On the other hand - you could have the next swoosh logo in store.

Fortunately, I'm not a talented designer so even if I entered I wouldn't care if they kept the rights to my work or not.

Thank for an extremely enlightening poast, you made so much cents that it actually changed my whole view on life.

I don't know why I posted in this thread in the first place. I already entered my design and I don't really want to hear others opinions on whether this contest is impacting the art community negatively or positively. I'm going to leave it at that because e-fighting is for loud obnoxious faggots, who ride Harley's.

GOOD LUCK to all the people who entered, can't wait for the favorites.

TJ youve been one of my favorite skiers since i learned there was such thing as a pro skier. Design contests are sick, im pretty sure they arent just trying to save money and get a ski design.

this contest is for us to have fun and be creative!

For starters it's post, not "poast", and sense not "cents". You can't even say its a typo its so bad.
Second, I wasn't saying it was bad for the "art community" but that it was unfair to the artists, especially because of how the fine print was worded. It has been modified since then, and although its not perfect by any means it made it much more fair for everyone (Thanks to TJ and Fergie for that).
If you had actually bothered to read the thread you wouldn't have looked like an idiot in your posts.

For starters, the first sentence of that post was 100% sarcasm.

Second, I appreciate you responding in a much clearer way because now I actually understand what's your saying. To be honest, I started reading this thread on page two when I posted my design. So that would make some sense too, well I mean at least I understand where you're coming from.

I still feel pretty much the same way in that I would gladly receive some gear for the 10+ hours I put into this design. But I definitely appreciate your response and your view, I can tell where you are coming from and I still respect you immensely as one of a handful of respectable members on this site.

Giving out swag, is just like giving out money. It's worth something, so therefore you are getting 'paid.'
I don't see why everyone is complaining. Take it or leave it. Just don't enter if you want to complain about the contest

I like butter, sugar, and cinnamon on my poasts. and smilies. as for cents it belongs in my pocket and my braaaaaiiiiinnnnn. So why did they extend the due date? any body have any good dreams lately?

Heres my design. Kept it canadian, ha. Had to hand draw it as ive never used illustrator before/ know how to do it. And i got no colour, so looks very average compared to some of these designs. But thought i would give it a bash, see what you guys think. Click for a bigger better image.
