time baffels me. its a consecpt thats abstract yet finite all at once. this thing and idea controls our lives and there isnt anything we can do about it. the reason why i say its abstract is because our preception of time shifts. some days you sit in class and the day just doesnt seem to end, while others you can hardly belive that an hour has just gone by cause it feels just like 10 minutes.

the way we messure time is relitive, but time its self is not. if it was then we would be able to go forwards and backwards through it, but we cant. its like we are stuck on a wave which is ever moving forwards. Well there's a pretty complex theory about that. Time can't be influenced on earth, but it is being stretched, compressed, and overall fucked up all over the universe. It's very possible (according to this theory) that time can go in reverse, but no living thing could survive the inconprehensible gravitational forces exerted.

i love these threads, they get me thinking and its fun (and crazy) to think about shit that is hard to comprehend its greatness like time and timetravel......speaking of timetravel, i saw a documentary were they are like 80% done witha working time machine, but the only thing is that you can only go back to a point in time after they switched on the machine, (so they couldnt go fuck witht he dinosuars and such) but it was cool. the thing was fucking huge like 4 stories tall, pretty cool stuff

The biggest hurdel i find when contemplating time is that its linear. By that i mean it has a distinct unidirectional path, With would incur that there must be a beggining. Which then brings me to the big bang. Ive read that gravity is tied with time and about then my mind usually gives up and melts.

actually the big bang isn't even close to the beginning of time. all that matter had to be compressed first, and where did that matter come from and what forces were acting on its compression? welcome to infinity.

i find it amazing that scientist even bother trying to piece together our universes' conception. i think we can all agree that we basically know nothing about it. we can only see so far with telescopes. the closest comparison i can make is the ocean. its like we are standing on the beach looking in. or are we in the middle of the water? and at what depth? its all within the same medium: water, but look at the variation between the puget sound and the coral reef, between tidepools and the marianas trench. i don't think understanding of the universe is within our species grasp, there simply isn't enough time regardless of our technological momentum.

the concept of infinity is baffling... especially when you think about the fact that you cant just get matter out of complete nothingness....which means it has been here for, well, an infinite amount of time... which i think brings about religion and different ideaas for the beginning of earth and the planets, etc... just to suit as an explaination for something that science cannot

i saw a guy on tv once who said that gravity was a push, not a pull. it kinda made sence. but if the universe is expanding and getting faster, does that mean that eventually time will come very close, if not completly, to a stop? what happens then? do we all just get stuck in the same position for all of eternity? and if we went so fast as to stop time, wouldnt we then stop moving too? cause isnt speed the amount of time you travel a distance? so with out time, there wouldnt be a speed and the distance travled would be zero, right?

p.s., after reading the last post, i have to add that i see religion more as a construct to help people deal with the fear of the unknown, mainly with what happens to a person after death.
