so you're saying, "the bible has to be true, no one can prove otherwise". evidence is found in sources that are true. it doesn't matter if the bible can't be disproven, so therefore you can't cite factual evidence from the bible.
 
I know what it means. It proves itself (I know will tell me this doesnt make sense), and it has many other evidences supporting it rather than denying it. So if the bible is true, then everything it says is true. Therefore God is real, and so is everything he says (which is in the bible). DO NOT just take (or dismiss) my word just because its what I am saying. Do your own reaserch. But as I said before it doesnt matter how much evidence I give you because you will not believe me.
 
Ok, my bad, if you dont know what to expect then its a mystery. But if you do know what to expect then it isnt, not saying I know exactly whats gonna happen tho.
 
goes back to my first post...if you believe there is a divine god, and a heaven and a hell, then when you pass on, I believe your beliefs will live on. For me, I do not believe in jesus, or the god that is spoken of in the bible, however I do agree there must be some sort of higher power, which is completley unexplainable, seeing as human beings are such miniscule things....
 
my problem is that i dont think you understand what constitutes as evidence. if it were somehow proven that everything said in the bible were true, i would have no problem believing there was a god. that's because in order for that to happen, sources outside the bible would need to be used. i'm not even arguing with you whether or not there is a god. i dont think you should lose your faith just because god is not proven to exist. good for you for believing in something, just don't make the mistake of thinking it has been proven.

In other words, it has to be based on facts which exists, not on the statements of whoever recorded and re-recorded the events and moral assertions in the Bible.
 
It has been proven, and continues to be proven. But do your own reaserch. And not biasedly. Haha, I like that, "Jesus Freaks", it has a nice ring.
 
... It occurs to me that you won't understand what I just posted. Example.

If I say, "when I added kool-aid powder to water, it turns red. Therefore, adding kool-aid powder to water, it makes it red", That statement is based on empirical proof.

If I say, "Bob invented the internet, everyone knows that", then my statement is based on no empirical proof.

The existence of God cannot be adequately demonstrated by empirical proofs. At least not until we see his hand coming down out of the sky...
 
Yes... and that's fine. I believe the same things you do, in fact. Just stop trying to tell people that PROOF of it exists in the world... none does.
 
An excellent book which outlines a belief strategy that can be read as philosophy or an engagin collection of moral fables. Certainly it isn't evidence, no more than The Lord of the Rings books are evidence that Elves exist...

Science is evidence without absolute certainty, religion is absolute certainty without evidence...

Believe/Faith is to hope something is there, not to know something is there...

However, knowledge is defined as true, justified belief...

The concept of God originated as a comfort for those about to perish, for those who felt insecure about the unknown, an easy option for those weak and simple minded that wanted the answers spoon fed to them and couldn't be fucked thinking outside their little christian box...

As the human race, we strive for knowledge, or true, justified belief, since we are so self assured we justify our own beliefs without evidence or reason, however it is still knowledge...

The 'paradise' the christian scriptures preach has nothing to do with the coming of christ or the rise of satan, they are parallels to what we as a society will go through in our quest for absolute knowledge - the real heaven

We are in a perfect state of being when we know nothing, or know everything...

It is our choice to choose what we strive for...
 
when we die we go and chill in the real world, and then make frequent trips back to the matrix...o and this "god" its neo

To regard everyone who is part of a religion as weak and simple minded is pretty close minded in itself. I know many very strong and intelligent people who are very religious.
 
The way i see it - even if there is a God, my problems are too trivial and i dont need to be praying about them. I think there probably is something higher up, but i agree with agnostic idea in that i dont agree with the way any religions try to explain things.
 
Well lets see, something like 70% of the world is involved in some kind of religious organizationso take your pick. If you are trying to say that simply because these people are religious you aren't as strong minded as some one who has no faith then you're blinded by your own ignorance.
 
There is little evidence to suggest that most of the founding fathers were all that bright. Even Madison, who is the father of your constitution, made more than his share of Presidential blunders... don't put too much faith in that...

How about we just say "Einstein" and shut the fuck up about it.
 
Well the wer smart enough to draw up the COnstitution which has withstood 200 years of change with only a few amendments. I'd say they were pretty damn smart to be able to see that far into the future.

But yes I like your Einstein argument not much anyone can say about that. The smartest man who ever lived was a Christian.
 
Not the smartest man ever, necessarily, but certainly a damn smart guy. And most of the smart guys historically believed in one God or other... although, to be fair, it used to sort of be required of everyone.

The D of I and the Constitution aren't exactly flawless documents. Ambiguity is a serious, serious problem. Important? Yes. Does that make the composers geniuses? Good God no.
 
^Agreed. Though I think if you look at what Einstein said of religion he was a true believer and not someone who was forced into those beliefs.

in a convo very similar to this someone said ( i forget who) that they would rather live their life believing in god and then if you die and find out he doesn't exist no big deal
 
fair enough, I wouldnt say that my morals have derived from religion, but when i began to explore various religions, i discovered they match up with my morals I came to on my own, so morality began creeping into the realm of synomoninity (lol) with religion.

guess i have to watch that though.

there are other moral guides than religion.

like "being a nice person"

I just feel that morality comes from within, and when you betray yourself, you betray your belief, or faith, or concept of "right".

i dont believe there are black and white things that are wrong.

I think theres an arguement for even the most heinious of crimes. If they came from a place of good intent (this line is blurred when you do things In the Name Of GOd as seen with the fanatics) then in the eyes of god you are still coll with him.

even if you raped and killed a 12 year old... goat. well, i guess girl would be more powerful, but meh, you get it.

for example, maybe she had a bomb inside her and the only way to de-fuse it was to fuck it with your cock. and then she had to be killed in order not to spread her virus.

whatever.

That's kind of iffy though, particularly the virus thing... imagine you had to kill a child to save 2 more children. Should you kill him or her? Do we want that kind of decision to be decided by arithmetic? The answer is actually "no", because "yes" is utilitarianism, and... well, that argument leads to putting a big philosophical smackdown on Bentham and Mill.

Anyway. There's a lot to be said on morality. Suffice to say, God is not a true source, there cannot be a relative morality, "I ought to do what is in my best interests" falls apart fast, and "The greatest good for the greatest number" fails miserably. Aside from that? Take a swing, maybe you'll solve something.
 
yeah, i realize its iffy.

I just know that when the time comes, i make the right decision. and I know when i don't. and I know when to admit i was wrong and try and go back.
 
Can someone, apart from being your personal safety blanket or the easy answer to all your questions, please give me an advantage in our society holding true to the values of religion and its practice?

Quoting Bad Religion here, 'What good is something if you can't have it until you die?' You all should listen or at least read the lyrics of such bands as bad religon, and also have a listen to the pennywise song 'my god'
 
im more agnostic than athesist i belieeve there is something more it just not a specified by anyone religeon,

read "the outsider" by albert camus the last chapter gives a pretty good description of someone who is dying but does not really care or believe in a specific christian heavon, or any for that matter

Moarl guidelines for people to live their lives by. The moral fabric of the U.S. has been falling apart pretty much since the 50's which I think everyone would agree has been caused by a lack of religion in this coutry. When the people of this country held themselves accountable to God the coutnry was a much better place. I'm not a religious person but I still feel Christianity needs to be brought back into this coutry.
